Bengaluru street vendors stage protest decrying Deputy CM's statement

Over 500 street vendors from across Bengaluru held a day-long protest at Freedom Park on Tuesday, decrying the recent statement by Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar that henceforth only those street vendors identified by the survey will be allowed to hawk in the city, that too only in push carts. The street vendors were unable to meet Chief Civic Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao on Tuesday despite being promised a meeting at 3 p.m. The Karnataka Progressive Street Vendors' Association, which organised the protest has warned of intensifying the protest unless the DCM withdraws his statement and BBMP announces a no-eviction policy. S. Babu, president of the Association and a street vendor from Vijayanagar market, said that the survey had registered only 27,000 street vendors, when the civic body has given loans under the PM SVAnidhi scheme to over 70,000 street vendors in the city. 'The survey has deliberately kept out vendors to show lesser numbers. Now the government cannot turn around and say only these 27,000 vendors will be allowed to hawk. Moreover, Mr. Shivakumar wants to evict these registered vendors as well, giving them electric push carts, asking them not to occupy any permanent spots,' he said, arguing that this was a clear violation of the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act 2014,' said.

Karnataka proposes stringent law to combat fake news and misinformation on social media. ‘7 year jail term and…'

In a significant move to tackle the spread of misinformation online, the Karnataka government is set to introduce a new law that proposes tough penalties for those found guilty of sharing fake news on social media platforms. The draft legislation — Karnataka Misinformation and Fake News (Prohibition) Bill, 2025 — is expected to be tabled before the next cabinet meeting. Peddling fake news on social can land one in massive trouble, according to the new bill proposed by Karnataka government. (Representative image/Pexel) Also Read - Bengaluru's bike taxi riders in a fix over ban, urge Karnataka govt to reverse crackdown According to the proposed bill, individuals found guilty of deliberately sharing false information that threatens public health, safety, peace, or the integrity of elections could face imprisonment of up to seven years, a fine reaching ₹ 10 lakh, or both. Even those residing outside the state who target Karnataka audiences with such content will fall under the ambit of this law. For spreading misinformation that disrupts public order or electoral processes, the bill suggests a minimum sentence of two years, extendable up to five years, along with monetary penalties. Furthermore, aiding or abetting the dissemination of such content could also lead to two years of imprisonment. The legislation aims to establish a complete ban on the circulation of fake news across social media platforms. To enforce this, the government plans to set up a regulatory body named the Fake News on Social Media Regulatory Authority. The bill defines "misinformation" as a false or misleading factual claim made either knowingly or with reckless disregard for accuracy. However, it excludes opinions, satire, parody, religious or philosophical expressions, and comedy — provided an ordinary person would not interpret them as factual assertions. "Fake news," on the other hand, includes manipulated statements, misquoted content, edited videos or audio that distort reality, and outright fabricated narratives. In addition to targeting misinformation, the Authority will oversee restrictions on content deemed abusive, obscene, or insulting to women, including posts that are anti-feminist or demean the dignity of women. The bill also proposes banning content that disrespects Sanatan beliefs and symbols or promotes superstition. To expedite justice, the draft bill proposes the creation of special courts dedicated to trying such offences swiftly. It also calls for appointing special public prosecutors — at least one for each special court and one for every bench of the High Court. If passed, the law would mark a major step in the state's efforts to regulate online spaces, amid growing concerns about the impact of digital misinformation on public life and democracy. 25,000 e-khatas ready for doorstep delivery: Dy CM DK Shivakumar

BENGALURU: Stating that the state government will deliver e-khatas to property owners at their doorstep as promised, Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister DK Shivakumar said on Wednesday that the process is on in Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) limits and 25,000 e-khatas will be delivered from July 1. Addressing reporters here, Shivakumar said, 'We have designed a campaign for disbursal of e-khatas in Bengaluru. The campaign was kicked off on a pilot basis in Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda's Byatarayanapura constituency. As many as 25,000 e-khatas are ready and they will be delivered at the doorstep from July 1. There are around 25 lakh houses and only about five lakh people have uploaded their documents. The campaign will be held for a month.' On B-khatas, he said, 'This matter has been discussed at the cabinet meeting. We will make an announcement after looking into all legal aspects.' The DCM said that a meeting of Congress MLAs from the city on formation of corporations under the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) was held sometime ago. The matter will be discussed with Opposition leaders also. 'We will take a decision after taking them into confidence,' he added. On issues related to waste management in the city, he said under the Swachchaa Bengaluru initiative, BBMP has set up a helpline to help clear garbage. 'People can take photos of garbage dumped on footpaths or other places and send them to this number. Action will be taken within a week. On pothole filling work, he said funds have been sanctioned to MLAs,' said DCM. Referring to the white-topping project, he said it is going on in many places in the city and he had inspected the quality of work.

Mega-park plan gets funding boost from Bengaluru's civic body

Bengaluru: The forest department's move to create large lung spaces for fast-expanding Bengaluru received a boost Tuesday, with DK Shivakumar promising enough funds for the project. "We already have Cubbon Park and Lalbagh in the city. If the forest department is keen on developing forest areas within Bengaluru, I have already told the forest minister that funds will be made available from BBMP. Once these forest areas are developed into mega tree parks, they will not only benefit the public but also save forest lands from encroachment," Shivakumar said. Last week, the forest department took possession of 153 acres of reserve forest in Madappanahalli near Yelahanka and planned to convert that into a mega park for bustling north Bengaluru. Over the last two centuries since the creation of Lalbagh and Cubbon Park, Bengaluru hasn't had any other mega park. The DCM said mandatory directions have been given to schools and colleges to set up eco-clubs to create awareness on climate change. "Each club must have at least 25 students and select a location near schools to plant trees," he told students at the Environment Day event. Chief minister Siddaramaiah said destroying nature is nothing but destroying ourselves. "If we protect biodiversity in Western Ghats, it will protect us," he told students. Reiterating the message, My Life My Tree, Siddaramaiah urged children to plant more trees in the coming days. — Raksha R
