Edu dept issues 29 guidelines to improve SSLC results across state

Mangaluru: In order to improve the SSLC results, which are seeing low pass percentage, the department of school education and literacy has issued a 29-point guideline to address the issue. Previously, there was a 20-point programme, which has now been expanded by nine more points. Govinda Madivala, DDPI, Dakshina Kannada, said that during the meeting, the senior officials mentioned various activities taken up over the period to improve the SSLC results. Some of them include Vijayi Bhava and the involvement of associations and NGOs to help increase the pass percentage. Giving out the 29-point guidelines, he said classes should be completed by Dec; remedial teaching will start from the beginning of the academic year itself, after identifying slow learners, and special classes must be held from July. The guidelines also stressed that students should be asked to reduce the use of their mobile phones and follow a healthy and balanced lifestyle. In order to prepare students in advance instead of at the last minute, there will be class tests conducted regularly, after which teachers will hold a parents-teachers meeting once every two months. The teachers have been asked to counsel parents to provide a conducive academic environment at home. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like لمن لديهم 2 مليون ر.س. أو أكثر مصادر دخل تساعد في تنمية الثروات شركة فيشر العربية للاستثمارات تعرف على المزيد Undo The schools have also been asked to give an early warning about those who remain absent from classes. Teachers have to visit their homes and bring them back. Another initiative introduced is buddy pairing, where slow learners will be helped by those who are good at academics. The initiatives include health check-ups, career guidance, identification of poorly performing schools, a wake-up call, at least one hour of play break every week, preparing watchlist schools, an adoption system, monthly progress meetings at schools, announcing the SSLC-1 and SSLC-2 exam timetable in advance, preparing and releasing model question papers, conducting preparatory exams, district-wise progress meetings, and readmission of those candidates who failed in previous years. Madivala added that some of the programmes listed above were already implemented in the district from the beginning of the academic year.

Only 10% of RTE seats filled in DK this academic year

Mangaluru: The school education and literacy department in Dakshina Kannada has reported a poor response to the Right to Education Act (RTE) Act this academic year as well. Out of a total 326 seats available, only 31 seats were filled after the second round of allotment. The number of schools and seats under RTE has decreased, with 83 schools and 326 seats available under RTE. In the academic year 2024-25, a total of 408 RTE seats out of the allocated 457 seats remained vacant in Dakshina Kannada. Govinda Madivala, DDPI of Dakshina Kannada, said that so far only 31 students were admitted to unaided schools in Belthangady, Mangaluru South, Mangaluru North, and Moodbidri. Mangaluru South had half of the admissions with 15 candidates, followed by Mangaluru North (8), Belthangady (6), and Moodbidri (2). Currently, a total 295 out of 326 allotted seats remain vacant under RTE. The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act 2009 mandated that private schools reserve 25% of their seats for children from economically disadvantaged families. During the initial implementation, the coastal district offered a total of 1,645 seats. "There are no takers this year as well. Only a few schools in selected wards had some takers," shared a caseworker. The official added that all those 31 seats taken belong to unaided schools in the four BEO limits. "There were more unaided schools last academic year, but they have been exempted from RTE as they have obtained minority education institution status. Parents are not interested in admitting their children into aided schools," said the caseworker, adding that there will not be another round of seat allotment. Another official added that RTE must do away with adding aided schools to the allotment list since there is only interest among the parents to admit their wards into unaided schools.

Private school in Bengaluru under scrutiny for making students write SSLC exam as private candidates

The Department of School Education and Literacy (DSEL) has decided to conduct an investigation against a private school in Bengaluru, which admitted around 10 of its students to a government school and had them write the SSLC exam as private candidates this year, as they had received low marks in Class 9. An FIR has been registered against St. Mary's Girls' School on the complaint lodged by parents at the High Grounds police station. 'This is a serious case and I already ordered the concerned Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI) to issue a notice to the school and conduct an investigation. Legal action will be taken against the school based on the DDPI report,' K.V. Trilokchandra, Commissioner of Public Instruction told The Hindu. Not informed It is alleged that the school administration, without informing the students and parents or taking permission of the department, enrolled around 10 students, who had not performed well in Class 9, into the Bruhath Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) school in Cleveland Town. Later, they were registered as private candidates for the SSLC exam of 2024-25. However, since the students had written the exam as private candidates, the internal marks given by the school were not applicable, and the students failed the SSLC exam. When the school administration was questioned about this, the parents did not get a proper answer and one of them, Aruna, filed a complaint with the police in this regard. An FIR was registered on May 27, 2025. Speaking to The Hindu, Ms. Aruna said, 'My daughter was studying in St. Mary's Girls School from class 4. Last year, I paid a total of ₹20,700 fee for class 10. But without informing us and without our consent, she was enrolled in a BBMP school and registered as a private candidate for the SSLC exam. My daughter failed because internal marks were not given. Even the Block Education Officer (BEO) did not respond to our problem,' she alleged. 'Will move court' Ms. Aruna said that a month had passed since an FIR was filed, but there has been no progress in the investigation. 'The police have not even recorded my statement yet. If my daughter does not get justice, I will move the court against the school, the police and the DSEL,' she warned.

As govt schools lack PE teachers, kids deprived of physical education

MANGALURU: Due to lack of physical education teachers in govt schools, children are being deprived of physical education. According to officials, PE teachers have not been recruited for close to two decades, and many of the older ones have retired. Teachers are moved to another school when admissions are low; however, new teachers are not recruited when admissions improve. As per the available data, in Dakshina Kannada, there are a total of 287 PE teacher posts in govt higher primary schools. Among them, only 160 are currently working. There are a total of 659 govt higher primary schools, 233 lower primary schools, and 170 high schools. "It is mandatory to have a physical education teacher irrespective of the number of students in high schools. Currently, there are only 132 teachers in 170 high schools," said Govinda Madivala, DDPI, Dakshina Kannada. Bhuvanesh J, district Physical Education Officer, DK, told TOI that no physical education teacher has been recruited since 2007. As per rule, every higher primary school with over 200 students should have one physical education teacher. Many schools have these numbers, but teachers are not recruited in these schools. "We requested the state to recruit PE teachers just like how the guest subject teachers are appointed for every district. We also proposed recruiting guest teachers to each BEO where they will visit and train students. None of the suggestions have been considered. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This has led to schools having sports teams without trained teachers. The situation is worse in aided govt schools where there are less than 10 physical education teachers currently," he said. Mohiuddin Kutty, president of SDMC coordination committee, said that in a memorandum to the education department, they have requested to reallocate available physical education teachers from nearby schools to all schools on a weekly basis, ensuring no child is deprived of physical education. The school report card: Physical Education from the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2024 also highlighted the lack of physical education teachers in Karnataka.

Govt school teacher suspended for sexually harassing girls

Kalaburagi: An assistant English teacher at a government high school in Kalaburagi taluk has been suspended following allegations of sexually harassing girl students inside the school premises. According to reports, the accused teacher allegedly used to call girl students to the computer room and behave inappropriately with them. Despite repeated warnings from the students, the teacher reportedly continued his misbehaviour, forcing parents to lodge a formal complaint with education department officials. Taking serious note of the allegations, the Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI) of Kalaburagi district, Suryakant Madane, confirmed the suspension and said an inquiry is underway. Speaking to the media, DDPI Madane stated, 'Around 3 pm on Thursday, we received credible information that an assistant English teacher in a government high school in South Kalaburagi taluk had engaged in inappropriate behaviour and used objectionable language with girl students. Immediately, we formed a three-member committee comprising a senior education officer, the headmaster of a high school, and a lady subject inspector to probe the allegations and submit a report.' He added, 'On the same day, we issued a notice to the accused teacher seeking an explanation within 24 hours regarding the complaint. Simultaneously, we have suspended him from service with immediate effect.'The DDPI further assured that a detailed investigation was in progress and strict action would be taken against the guilty. He also said the department would initiate action under the stringent POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act, since the allegations involved minor girl students. Parents and locals have demanded that the authorities ensure the safety and dignity of girl students in government schools and take exemplary action to prevent such incidents in the future.
