Govt school teacher suspended for sexually harassing girls
Kalaburagi: An assistant English teacher at a government high school in Kalaburagi taluk has been suspended following allegations of sexually harassing girl students inside the school premises.
According to reports, the accused teacher allegedly used to call girl students to the computer room and behave inappropriately with them. Despite repeated warnings from the students, the teacher reportedly continued his misbehaviour, forcing parents to lodge a formal complaint with education department officials.
Taking serious note of the allegations, the Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI) of Kalaburagi district, Suryakant Madane, confirmed the suspension and said an inquiry is underway.
Speaking to the media, DDPI Madane stated, 'Around 3 pm on Thursday, we received credible information that an assistant English teacher in a government high school in South Kalaburagi taluk had engaged in inappropriate behaviour and used objectionable language with girl students.
Immediately, we formed a three-member committee comprising a senior education officer, the headmaster of a high school, and a lady subject inspector to probe the allegations and submit a report.' He added, 'On the same day, we issued a notice to the accused teacher seeking an explanation within 24 hours regarding the complaint.
Simultaneously, we have suspended him from service with immediate effect.'The DDPI further assured that a detailed investigation was in progress and strict action would be taken against the guilty. He also said the department would initiate action under the stringent POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act, since the allegations involved minor girl students.
Parents and locals have demanded that the authorities ensure the safety and dignity of girl students in government schools and take exemplary action to prevent such incidents in the future.

Newborn Girl Found Dumped In Basket In Navi Mumbai, 'Sorry' Note Recovered
Mumbai: A three-day-old girl has been found abandoned in a basket in Navi Mumbai, with her parents leaving a note in it, apologising and expressing their inability to raise her due to their poor financial condition, police said on Sunday. A local resident on Saturday alerted the police about the baby lying in a blue coloured basket on a roadside at Takka Colony in Panvel area of Navi Mumbai. The police rushed to the spot and took the child into their custody, an official said. A note written in English was also found in the basket, wherein the newborn's parents claimed their financial condition was not sound, due to which they will not be able to raise the child, he said. The girl's parents also said "sorry" in the note, as they were not able to do anything and had no other option, the official added. The police took the baby to a pediatrician, who checked her and found she was stable, he said. The official said the police were searching for the girl's parents. The Panvel Town police have registered a case against unidentified persons under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita on charges of abandoning the newborn, he said.

Kolkata law college rape case: CCTV footage corroborates victim's account, SIT expanded to 9 members
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Kolkata law college rape case has been expanded from five to nine members to expedite the investigation, police officers confirmed Sunday. The move comes as investigators make significant progress, with collected CCTV footage reportedly corroborating the statement of the first-year student of the law college who was allegedly raped on June 25 in the security guard's room on the campus. Police sources revealed that more than seven and a half hours of CCTV footage from the college's external gate and premises have been collected and meticulously examined. 'Yes, the CCTV footage… also corroborates the victim's statement,' a senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Indian Express, specifically referring to the complainant's claim that she was prevented from leaving the college. So far, four people have been arrested in connection with the alleged rape: a contractual staffer and former student of the college, Monojit Mishra, 31; and two students, Zaib Ahmed, 19, and Pramit Mukherjee, 20; and a security guard of the college, Pinaki Banerjee. All four arrested were visible in the CCTV footage obtained by the police from the day of the alleged rape, confirming their presence at the scene, as per the police. The SIT has already applied for the confidential statements of the survivor and her parents. Bidisha Kalita, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Jadavpur Division, Kolkata, along with Pradeep Kumar Ghoshal, Assistant Commissioner of Police (South Suburbs), who leads the SIT, visited the crime scene on Sunday and began an examination. Investigators have compiled a list of all those who visited the college on June 25, based on CCTV footage and witness statements. All those on this list will be questioned, with some already summoned by the police. The survivor's parents are also expected to record their confidential statements before a magistrate.
