Jeffrey, Yong tell of systemic challenges against change
Published on: Saturday, June 28, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jun 28, 2025 By: Sherell Jeffrey Text Size: Yong and Jeffrey. Kota Kinabalu: The final townhall hosted by Sabah Action Body Advocating Rights (Sabar) saw rival political parties sitting together and actually agreeing on something, that it is time to listen to what Sabahans really want. Among those present were Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star) President cum Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan. He delivered perhaps the most stirring call for political unity, reflecting on his own experience of being arrested for advocating similar causes in the past. 'We are lucky that we have a body like Sabar. In those days when I started, when I tried to do this, I got arrested. So you are lucky, the situation has changed,' he said, congratulating the civil society organisation for creating space for citizen engagement. Subscribe or LOG IN to access this article. It will be a race for second place
Published on: Saturday, June 28, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jun 28, 2025 By: James Wong Text Size: I personally doubt it and hopefully they can prove me wrong. THE 2025-2026 Super League football season is scheduled to commence in August starting with the charity shield between JDT (Johor Darul Ta'zim) FC and Selangor FC on August 8. There are going to be only 13 teams taking part in the new season as Sri Pahang and Kedah Darul Aman opted out and will not be on the list. However, we do have Brunei making an entry to the league. I am just wondering if the teams in the new season will bring some excitement to the fans or will it be the same old routine just like every other year where JDT FC will be dominating the competition. By the look of it, I do not think other teams will pose a threat at all. Basically, the rest will only fight for the second and third positions to give them a chance to compete at the Asian level. ‘Provide edu to foreign kids in estates' call
Published on: Tuesday, June 24, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 24, 2025 By: Christy Chok Text Size: Project Liber8 participants and parents attending a short briefing given by the Global Shepherds volunteer, Jell, at the Community Learning Center at CLC Kuari 3, Gum-Gum, Sandakan recently. TAWAU: Up to 20,000 children are said to be assisting parents in Sabah's oil palm plantations – risking their safety, health, education and development in the process. This estimate is based on the 2018 Employment Survey in Plantations by the Government which stated that 33,600 children aged 5-17 work in the industry, with Sabah accounting for 58.8pc. 'Education is the only way out of this generational trap, especially a cluster-based model where large plantation firms host regional learning centres serving multiple smaller estates. 'These children are invisible in the system and without access to formal education, many end up helping their parents in the fields from as young as seven or eight.,' said William Tan Boon Lian, Deputy-Chairman of Agriculture & Aquaculture Committee of the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia cum the Deputy-president of Tawau Chinese Chamber of Commerce (TCCC). KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah China Chamber of Commerce is committed to building a bridge for economic, trade, and cultural exchanges between China and Sabah. Guided by the principle of mutual cooperation and win-win development, the Chamber actively promotes the rich heritage of traditional Chinese culture. This was expressed by Datuk Frankie Liew President of the Sabah China Chamber of Commerce, during an exchange session held at the SCCC conference Room with a 14-member delegation from China led by President Zhang Huaxia of the Hui Gong Cultural Committee of China (Zhang Clan Association of China) and the Beijing Hui Gong Cultural Development Centre (Zhang Clan Association of Beijing). Liew said the meeting was more than a cultural exchange — it also symbolised the deep kinship between the two associations and celebrated the grand opening of the new Sabah Zhang Clan Association building. Malaysian faces capital punishment after $540,000 drug bust at Naia
Published on: Wednesday, June 18, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 18, 2025 By: Nikko Fabian Text Size: While Malaysia has abolished the death penalty for most crimes, its citizens remain vulnerable to the harsh penalties imposed under Philippine law. MANILA: A Malaysian faces capital punishment – the death penalty – after Philippine authorities seized P29.7 million (about US$540,000) worth of shabu (methamphetamine) from his luggage at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) Terminal 3. The arrest, a joint operation between the Bureau of Customs (BOC), the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), and the NAIA Inter-Agency Drug Interdiction Task Group, highlights the escalating war on drugs in the Philippines and the severe consequences faced by foreign nationals involved in drug trafficking. Advertisement The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was apprehended last Saturday following a multi-stage inspection process. X-ray scans, K-9 detection, and a thorough physical examination of his luggage revealed 4,368 grams of shabu concealed within a suspicious package. Subsequent laboratory tests confirmed the substance. Subscribe or LOG IN to access this article.
