BAU scientists develop 4 new climate-resilient rice varieties

Bhagalpur: In a bid to make Bhagalpur and Bihar the rice bowl of India, scientists at Bihar Agricultural University (BAU) have developed four new high-yielding, disease-resistant and climate-friendly rice varieties. The newly developed varieties – Sabour Katarni Dhan-1, Sabour Samba Dhan, Sabour Vibhuti Dhan and Sabour Shri Sub-1 – were released by BAU and recommended to the State Varietal Release Committee (SVRC) for evaluation. "They will then be referred to the Central Varietal Release Committee (CVRC) and Central Seed Committee (CSC) under The Seeds Act, 1966, for national-level recommendation," said BAU vice-chancellor D R Singh on Sunday. Praising the efforts of BAU scientists, he said, "Sabour Katarni Dhan-1, developed by Mankesh Kumar and team, is a high-yielding, non-lodging, early-maturing variety with one-and-a-half times more yield than existing types. Its seeds will soon be mass-produced for farmers in Bhagalpur." On 'Sabour Samba Dhan', developed by Prakash Singh's team, he said, "It has medium-long grains and high productivity. It can serve as an alternative to the Bapatla variety and will be demonstrated across 100 acres of farmland." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! The fourth, 'Sabour Vibhuti Dhan', developed by Amarendra Kumar's team, is "tolerant to bacterial leaf blight and offers high yield through gene pyramiding," he said. The VC added that the BAU research council has approved all four varieties and efforts are being made to ensure large-scale demonstration, packaging and distribution to farmers, including during the current rainy season.

Bhagalpur: Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), Sabour, Bhagalpur, has been awarded with NAAC Grade 'A' certification with a remarkable score of 3.08 out of 4 CGPA points, making it a nationally acclaimed institution of the state. BAU vice chancellor DR Singh said the NAAC Grade 'A' has put the university among the top-ranking universities of the country in the field of agriculture imparting education on projects focusing on sustainable agriculture, climate-resilient crops, precision farming, biotechnology and soil health etc. "The NAAC peer team visited the university between May 28 to May 30 for assessment in which all major academic, administrative, infrastructural, research and education extension aspects were thoroughly evaluated," the VC said. Referring to the grading, the VC further said it is a prestigious recognition awarded to higher educational institutions, indicating that it has achieved a high-level of standards in various aspects, including teaching, research, infrastructure, governance and student outcomes, within in a short span of 15 years. BAU launches organic makhana drive in Purnia

1 2 Bhagalpur: In a major push to transform farming in the state's Kosi belt, including Purnia and Kishanganj, Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), Sabour, has launched the ambitious ' Organic Makhana Cultivation Programme ' (OMCP) under its 'Know Your Crop' (KYC-Makhana) initiative. The drive began this week at Bhola Paswan Shastri Agricultural College (BPSAC), Purnia. Titled the 'Green to White Organic Revolution', the flagship OMCP aims to shift makhana (fox nut) farming from traditional methods to scientific, organic and sustainable practices. Two-month-old seedlings were symbolically transplanted at the university's first dedicated organic makhana research plot. The project is aimed at expanding makhana cultivation by 25-30%. A key highlight is the upcoming release of BAU's first elite variety, Sabour Makhana-1 , which yields up to 3.5 tonnes per hectare and offers a high popping percentage. It blends tradition with modern breeding, improves soil health and caters to health-conscious consumers," said BAU vice-chancellor D R Singh. He added, "BAU's work helped Mithila makhana receive the GI tag, which enhanced branding, export potential and led to the Centre establishing a National Makhana Board. " OMCP also promotes mechanised sowing, improved input efficiency and year-round farming across regions beyond north Bihar. Anil Kumar Singh, BAU's director of research, said the KYC-Makhana initiative is aimed at developing an internationally compliant organic farming package. "We have identified a compound in makhana with natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, truly a superfood," he said. Earlier, scientists, students and stakeholders, led by BPSAC principal D K Mahto, participated in the ceremonial planting.
