DSMNRU prints over 2K braille books; to be available free of cost
Lucknow: The braille press of Dr Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University (DSMNRU) has printed over 2,000 books covering more than 30 subjects that would be accessible to visually impaired students free of cost from the academic session 2025-26. According to university officials, this move will not only improve the results of the students due to the availability of books but will also save their money. DSMNRU offers several courses for visually impaired students, such as BEd in Special Education (Visual Impairment), a Diploma in Special Education (Visual Impairment), and an MEd in Visual Impairment. "The braille press will be a major relief for our visually impaired students whose results were impacted due to the challenges they faced in procuring braille books. The best thing is that the books published are in accordance with the National Education Policy," said DSMNRU spokesperson Yashwant Virodai. He said the braille books cover various academic disciplines, including sociology, education and English literature. The university library now houses a dedicated section for these braille textbooks, making them readily available to visually impaired students. Dsmnru students win 5 medals in badminton meet
Lucknow: Two physically disabled students of Dr Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University (DSMNRU) made the university and the country proud by winning one gold, one silver and three bronze medals in different categories at the Uganda Para Badminton International Tournament held in Kampala, Uganda, recently. Participants from around 50 countries took part in the tournament. DSMNRU's Swati, who is pursuing BA at the university and plays with one hand, won a silver medal in women's singles, a gold medal in doubles and a bronze medal in mixed doubles at the tournament. Swati, who hails from a small village in Jalaun, said, "I began playing badminton with a single hand at a small stadium in Orai. My father Kamlesh Kumar is a farmer and luckily my mother's name is Shakuntala Devi, the same as my university. My father, mother and my university are behind my success." Meanwhile, MBA student Kanak Singh won two bronze medals in singles and doubles. She also credited her parents and coach for her success. DSMNRU badminton coach Irshad Ahmed said, "These two players of the university not only raised the name of the university and the country, but also gave a message to the whole society that no matter what the challenges are, every goal can be achieved with true hard work and confidence."

Rehab varsity opens portal for UG admission
Lucknow: Dr Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University (DSMNRU) has opened its portals for undergraduate admission through common university entrance test (CUET) 2025 scores. Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University will also open its registration portal by Wednesday. "CUET scores have been released. Students can now go ahead with university-specific counselling registration by visiting official websites of universities they are interested in and register for their CUET counselling process. Hence, we have opened the registration portal," said DSMRU spokesperson Yashant Virodai. Meanwhile, BBAU admission coordinator Amit Kumar Singh also shared that the registration portal for UG candidates will be opened by Wednesday.

UP girls win medals at Uganda para badminton tourney
Lucknow: Two girls from Dr Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University (DSMNRU), Lucknow, won gold, silver and bronze medals at the Uganda Para Badminton International Tournament 2025. Swati clinched a silver medal in the Women's Singles SU-5 category, a gold in Women's Doubles SL3-SU5, and a bronze in Mixed Doubles. Meanwhile, Kanak earned bronze medals in both Women's Singles SL-4 and Women's Doubles. The tournament, held in Kampala, Uganda, from July 1 to 6, saw participation from para-badminton athletes from over 50 countries. Congratulating the winners, minister for divyangjan empowerment, Narendra Kashyap, said: "The success of Swati and Kanak is not just a personal triumph it also reflects the effectiveness of the upliftment model developed by the Yogi govt. These daughters have proven that no challenge is insurmountable when opportunity, resources and guidance are provided." SMNRU vice chancellor Prof Sanjay Singh credited the university's academic and rehabilitation ecosystem for the success. "Our girl students are showcasing their talent on the global stage. This is a proud and inspiring moment for all daughters and divyangjans in the state," he said. Director of SMNRU's sports and yoga cell, Prof Pandeya Rajivnayan, said the achievement reflects the success of the university's training policies. Coach Irshad Ahmed said: "With dedication, hard work and self-belief, no challenge is impossible. This victory will inspire society at large."

DSMNRU introduces special medals for disabled meritorious students
Lucknow: In a first, Dr Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University (DSMNRU) on Friday introduced Chancellor's, Vice-Chancellor's, and Chief Minister's Gold Medals exclusively for disabled meritorious students. The medals will be awarded during the 2025 convocation ceremony. "Our specially abled students have made us proud at both national and international levels. However, until now, our university did not have any special medals to honour such brilliant students. Therefore, the university has decided to award the Chancellor's Gold Medal to our visually impaired and physically challenged students," said DSMNRU spokesperson Yashant Virodai. "We already award the Chancellor's Gold Medal to the overall toppers. This will be a second Chancellor's Gold Medal, specifically for our disabled students. Similarly, the university has decided to give away special Vice-Chancellor's and Chief Minister's Gold Medals, which will also be awarded to visually impaired and physically challenged meritorious students."
