My Dark Beautiful World – DW – 06/30/2025
Many people daydream. But excessive daydreaming can become a burden. This is because the exaggerated mental digressions, termed Maladaptive Daydreaming (MD), often get in the way of real life. Protagonists Amber, Sian and Dušan share their experiences, living lives cut off from reality. Combining intimate interviews with scenes from their day-to-day lives, 'My Dark Beautiful World' not only reveals what Amber, Sian and Dušan daydream about, but also documents their journey towards coming back to reality, unpacking what it is they're really escaping from along the way. Although the fantasies in daydreams can also help to organize thoughts, reduce stress, process events and wishes and inspire creativity, the film shows that 'too much of a good thing' prevents people from mastering their everyday lives and completing important tasks. And if the hopes expressed in daydreams aren't fulfilled, it can even be a trigger for depression. Lie To Me - The OneCoin Scandal – DW – 06/30/2025
OneCoin was launched in 2014 and billed as the world's largest cryptocurrency. Founder Ruja Ignatova earned many millions of Euros before a tech nerd stepped in to stop the scam - putting himself in danger. Bjørn Bjercke is a blockchain expert. Blockchain is a decentralized database that records transactions in a network and stores them, unalterably. All cryptocurrencies in the world are operated on blockchains. OneCoin also claimed to have one. But Bjørn Bjercke knew better. The creators of OneCoin tried to recruit him. They offered him a tempting salary, a large car and various apartments. In return, he would set up a blockchain for the cryptocurrency. But all this was months after OneCoin launched. It was clear to Bjercke from the start that this had to be a scam. He went public. By this time, however, the international OneCoin community had already grown considerably, thanks to a snowball system. OneCoin devotees felt threatened by Bjercke's revelations and tried to silence him. In the meantime, the creators of OneCoin have been put out of business. Founder Ruja Ignatova has disappeared and is wanted by the German authorities, among others. Bjørn Bjercke is working with authorities around the world to uncover new scams. But for those who lost money, all this comes too late. Tomatoes - Indulgence With an Aftertaste – DW – 06/30/2025
Delicious, sweet, low in calories: Tomatoes have a good reputation. They're the most important vegetable in the world, with a total production of 190 million tons per year. But how sustainable is their cultivation? Almería, Spain, supplies Europe with fresh vegetables all year round. But the place known as the vegetable garden of Europe looks more like a sea of plastic: greenhouse plantations cover an area the size of 45,000 soccer pitches, stretching to the horizon. The tomato is a diva: it can't get too warm, or too cold and doesn't like too much direct sunlight. Watering must also be carefully controlled and the plastic coverings help with this. A blessing for tomato lovers, but a curse for others: Marcos Diéguez from the Spanish environmental protection organization "Ecologistas en Acción' has been fighting the flood of plastic for years. Only around a third of the plastic is disposed of properly, he explains. The rest ends up in one of the many illegal garbage dumps in the region. And plastic isn't the only problem: Tomato farming is labor-intensive and corners are often cut on wages. In the morning hours, the streets of Almería are full. Men, mainly from North Africa, stand on the roadsides hoping for work. For these people, every day is a struggle, says Miguel Carmona from the SOC-SAT Almería trade union. The harvest workers often have no documents or employment contracts. They live in makeshift shelters, built from scraps of wood and discarded greenhouse tarpaulins. No electricity, no running water, no sanitary facilities. In the middle of Europe. The documentary explores the question of how tomato production can become more sustainable. New, more robust varieties should help. Some tomato producers are also trying to use geothermal energy in greenhouses for climate-friendly cultivation. The Srebrenica Tape - From Dad, for Alisa – DW – 06/30/2025
From 1993 to 1995, amateur filmmaker Sejfo films everyday life in Srebrenica during the war. He describes people's hopes and fears in the Bosnian-Muslim enclave. The movie is meant as a message for his young daughter, Alisa. April 1992: The Bosnian war breaks out. The ethnic conflict between Serbs and Muslim Bosnians escalates rapidly. Alisa, then nine years old, lives in the small Bosnian-Muslim town of Srebrenica. Her parents - her father is Bosnian, her mother Serbian - take her to safety. They bring her to her grandparents in Ljubovija, in Serbia. Then they return to Srebrenica without their daughter. Alisa has little contact with her parents until after the war. In the summer of 1995, Ratko Mladić's troops murder over 8,000 Muslim men in Srebenica within a few days. Sejfo is one of them. Almost 30 years later, Alisa returns to Bosnia. She tracks down the relatives and friends from her father's tape who survived the genocide in Srebrenica. She wants to understand the last months of her father's life. She also wants to know: What happened in the enclave between 1993 and 1995? Did people think they were safe? "The Srebrenica Tape' is an intimate search, conducted by a woman whose life was changed forever by one of the greatest crimes against humanity in modern Europe.
