There's A Gingham Summer Dress For Everyone - Here Are 18 Styles To Shop Now
A gingham summer dress is at the top of my summer wish list and I blame three (impeccably dressed) women. First, it was Sarah Jessica Parker, who emerged from an interview wearing a dirndl-inspired, corseted gingham dress (by Austrian designer Lena Hoscheck) atop a vintage-looking blouse. Carrie Bradshaw would approve, I mentally noted. Then, ELLE UK's Daisy Murray teamed a chocolate checked smock dress with a matching headscarf – both by If Only If. Finally, Olivia Rodrigo attended Wimbledon wearing a strawberries-and-cream shirt dress by Ralph Lauren. It was the holy trinity of micro-checks – I was sold. The gingham summer dress isn't a new invention, and that's what makes it such a worthy addition to your wardrobe – it can be worn season after season, decade after decade. For example, the navy and white shift Jane Birkin sports in 1969 film La Piscine wouldn't look out of place today; nor would the pink gingham dress Brigitte Bardot wore to her wedding in 1959 – minus the crinoline, at least for everyday purposes. Allegedly, it was so widely copied that it led to a shortage of gingham fabric in France. Miuccia Prada has long been partial to the print, incorporating it into her own wardrobe, as well as her designs for Prada and Miu Miu. The same goes for Rei Kawakubo, who first introduced gingham into the Comme des Garçons lexicon in 1997, as the fabric of choice for the iconic 'lumps and bumps' collection; the print continues to be a key part of the brand's offering today. If it's good enough for Rei and Miuccia (and Daisy and Sarah Jessica and Olivia), it's good enough for me – and you, dear reader. That's why I've rounded up 18 great gingham summer dresses to see you through the season and for many years to come. From shifts to shirt dresses, midi sundresses to mini smocks, consider this your (gingham) check list. Do like Olivia Rodrigo and step out in a densely-checked shirt dress. To keep things from looking too scholastic, opt for a deep V-neckline or a form-fitting silhouette and finish with a sleek shoulder bag and cat-eye sunglasses. When one thinks of gingham, one thinks of prairie dresses. A puff-sleeve midi and ballet flats are a timeless combination for summer, or go flirtier in the itty-bitty mini from Frankie's Bikinis collab with Bella Hadid – perfect with 1990s-inspired mules. Summer's picnics and garden parties call for a pretty gingham sundress. The fitted bodice and full skirt has a 1950s feel, best contrasted by a pair of modern, minimal sandals or mules. The pencil dress throws off its corporate associations when rendered in gingham print. Róhe's rendition is practically perfect in every way, and looks particularly good with ballet flats and a basket tote – ideally in a riviera setting. The smock dress has our hearts, especially when it's made mini and adorned with gingham checks. Do like ELLE UK's Daisy Murray and wear If Only If's Brigitte dress with the matching headscarf and fisherman sandals. SS25 sees the return of the Sixties-ish shift. Hunza G's halter style doubles as a dress and beach cover-up – wear it with the coordinating bikini and citrus-coloured flip flops. 6 Summer Trouser And Sandal Combinations That Can Handle The Heat
When temperatures soar and the air feels thick with humidity, your outfit needs to do more than just look good, it needs to help you stay cool and comfortable. Enter the unsung heroes of warm-weather dressing: summer trousers and sandals. While summer dresses and shorts often steal the spotlight during summer, a well-chosen pair of lightweight trousers can offer equal parts style and ventilation, not to mention a touch of sophistication that shorts sometimes lack. And when paired with the right sandals, the result is a polished, put-together look that doesn't compromise on airflow. But pulling off trousers and sandals in the summer requires a bit of finesse. It's all about balance: fabrics that breathe, cuts that flatter, and footwear that complements. Think airy linens, relaxed satins, and sandals that range from minimal leather to trendy jelly sandals. The goal? To create combinations that not only survive the heat but thrive in it, even at the office. Here are six foolproof trouser and sandal pairings to get you started. Minimal sandals featuring some hardwear are aplenty this season, and a great way to introduce a point of interest in a pared-back ensemble. One for the Y2K style lovers out there, Peachy Den's Mimi cargo, parachute trousers should be finished off with some glittery flip flops and a baby tee. Play with textures by wearing Miu Miu's patent clogs with Gimaguas' linen trousers. Channel Sabrina Carpenter in this kitsch pairing of embroidered capris and peep-toe jelly shoes. La Veste's off-kilter trousers call for some vibe-matching shoes, and Alaïa's mesh flats fit the bill. Mix and match more formal, linen suit trousers by With Nothing Underneath with some laid back rope sandals. Why The Puma Speedcat Ballet Is The Sneakerina Of The Summer
This summer, one shoe is headlining fashion's love affair with comfort and nostalgia: the Puma Speedcat Ballet. A frontrunner in the Sneakerina race, alongside Nike's Air Rifts and Adidas' Taekwondo Meis, this hybrid combines the streamlined appeal of a running trainer with the delicate silhouette of a ballet flat—two unlikely influences that together form the chicest low-profile footwear of the season. Taking cues from their iconic Speedcat racing shoe, and infused with minimalist ballet-inspired design, the graceful but practical shoe (that currently comes in silver, pink, black and red) has become this season's surprise hit and is beloved by Dua Lipa, me, and a bunch of other people too. According to trend data from Lyst, searches for 'ballet sneakers' skyrocketed by 1300% in the first few months of 2025, and the Speedcat ballet was Lyst's third hottest product of Q1. Styling the Speedcat Ballet is all about leaning into its contrast - pairing its sporty DNA with soft, feminine or playful looks. I recently wore my red pair with an upcycled embroidered blouse, a bold red mini skort from Free People, and a printed tote, making an easy weekend outfit, perfect for pootling around the shops in. You could also pair them with cargo pants and a baby tee for an early-Noughties vibe, or consider a simple summer mini dress. However you style them, the Puma Speedcat Ballet brings the perfect mix of comfort, edge, and cool-girl energy. With a celebrity fanbase, a cult following, and serious style versatility, the Speedcat Ballet is more than just a trend - it's the sneaker of summer 2025. 6 Maxi Dress And Sandal Combinations To Survive Summer In
If you haven't checked the weather forecast then let us be the first to tell you: it's going to get hotter again in the UK later this week. And whether this is music to your ears, or more akin to nails on a chalkboard, you're going to need some outfit solutions to manage the warmth. Summer dresses and sandals are the catch-all solution, and even better when the dress is maxi length: protecting your skin from direct sunlight, while ensuring cool air circulates freely. Sandals, of course, are ideal footwear over trainers, keeping your foot cool no matter the humidity. If you're worried about a maxi summer dress and sandal pairing reading a little too beachy and casual, then we've put together six combinations to help you weather this scorching storm. Bring a touch of bucolic wonder to the quotidian with Miu Miu's patent clogs and play with textures by pairing with a Broderie Anglaise maxi dress. For those whose idiom is 'less is more', try translucent flip flops and a black, silk maxi dress. All you need is a capacious tote and some sunglasses and you're good to go. Match the meteorology with this red hot combination. Altuzarra's plunging dress can be dressed down with Dear Frances' part ballet, part sandal, burgundy-hued shoes. The high street is your hero when it comes to hot weather dressing, and this strapless Mango dress, plus M&S sandal combination proves it. Be ever so practical while being the chicest around in Miu Miu's cord sandals. Paired with a simple khaki maxi dress and perhaps a bandana headscarf and you'll remain unflustered no matter the humidity. Tiny straps, be it on your dress or you shoes, are a great heatwave hack. These Arket leather sandals are a minimalists dream, but try offsetting with a bold-hued maxi dress, like this one from Cos. 7 Black Summer Dresses For A Foolproof Warm Weather 'Fit
Summer dressing can send some of us into metaphorical (or literal) hives. For some, humidity and hayfever does the trick, while for others it's the societal pressure to dress like a different person when it gets over 20 degrees. So, for those of us who consider floral prints an abomination, are more goth than girlie, or simply want a minimal dress that works for multiple occasions in summer: consider a black summer dress. Black summer dresses are the solution to many a summer dressing conundrum, mainly being a pretty perfect answer to the question: 'what the heck am I meant to wear?'. In a natural fibre like silk, linen and cotton, you can still feel cool in a dark-hued dress, and they can withstand a little more stain-creating activities (sitting in a park, getting on public transport, toddler hand attacks and so forth) than the much-lauded white summer dress. While they work well for those hoping to slink into the background, they can also be extremely style forward: not only can you opt for a trendy bubble hem, crochet or drop-waist style, but they are an excellent black canvas to be more daring with your sandals, jewellery and handbags. Here are out favourite black summer dresses to shop now... If your workplace is ok with a bit of exposed back, this dress might turn out to be the hardest working piece of clothing in your wardrobe. The midaxi length, cotton fabrication and timeless silhouette makes it appropriate for almost any dress code and time of year, just swap out sandals and outerwear as appropriate. Pointelle is quickly becoming the cool girl's fabrication of choice this summer. Cou Cou Intimates has a handful of black summer dresses, but this vest style mini is our favourite - pair with ballet flats and an obnoxiously small bag. For those of us who consider ourselves Mary-Kate Olsen-adjacent style wise, Cos' louche maxi is just the ticket. We'd add an arm cuff over the sleeve and a pair of barely-there sandals to complete the ensemble. We're loving the crochet resurgence this summer, and Mango's mini is one of the best. Featuring long sleeves and a mini length, you can take this dress to the beach or bar with some slick styling choices. Matteau has become something of a Holy Grail brand for Fashion Editors to find their summer holiday dresses, and this strapless design from the brand proves it. Invest in this midi and wear it for years to come, be it abroad or here in Blighty. Don't let the nightie dress trend pass you by, just because you're a little more goth than girlie. Dôen is Queen of this bucolic style, so consider their Almadia sun dress that would work as well with a woven bag and flip flops as with loafers and a knit. Bring some dark romance to your wardrobe with a lace-trimmed, silky, slip-style dress from Rixo. If you're looking for a more pared back, but still charming, wedding guest dress, we think the Clarice is a contender, just pair with some open-toe sling-backs and a Gucci Jackie bag.
