Why Gen Z is freaking out over The Love Hypothesis movie casting

What do you get when you mix 'Star Wars' Rey and Kylo fan fiction, a best-selling romance novel, a former 'Riverdale' star, and 'Star Wars' Daisy Ridley's real-life husband? Nope, not the start of a really niche pub quiz. This is the actual casting news behind 'The Love Hypothesis' you don't know what I am talking about, then don't worry, it'll all make sense in the next few minutes. I here's the thing. Ali Hazelwood, a renowned novelist, wrote a romantic-comedy novel called, and you guessed it, 'The Love Hypothesis'. It is about a third-year PhD candidate (Olive Smith) and a young professor (Adam Carlsen) who agree to fake date each other. Until Olive's best friend is convinced she is not single and definitely not in love with her best friend's crush. If you're a rom-com fan like me, I am sure this plot is calling for you. The book instantly became a fan favourite, and now they are converting it into a film. Now let's talk about why everybody (mostly me) is freaking out over the Hazelwood's 'The Love Hypothesis' didn't start as a story dedicated to the genre (rom-com). It was originally fan fiction. Yes, Hazelwood, just like most of us, was fangirling (more like geeking) over 'Star Wars'. I mean, who wouldn't? And she was absolutely obsessed with Rey and Kylo Ren's relationship in the movie. And she wanted to write a cute romantic story filled with some comic scenes here and there.I am sure now you have some idea where this is leading to. If not? Here's more. Recently, the announcement for the book's adaptation came through. And 'Riverdale' star Lili Reinhart was announced to play Olive. But the real twist that no one saw coming (except maybe Tumblr circa 2016) was the casting of Tom Bateman as Adam Carlsen. Tom Bateman is the real-life husband of Daisy Ridley. Why is this a big deal? Because Daisy Ridley played Rey in 'Star Wars'. Yes, the same Rey who was the inspiration behind Olive's character. Honestly, you couldn't write this. Except someone literally 'Star Wars' fan fiction was posted online under the title 'Head Over Feet', with the OG couple. It got picked up by a publisher. The lightsabers were swapped for lab coats, but the core dynamic? Still there. Olive's socially awkward brilliance? Peak Rey. Adam's emotionally repressed academia? Classic Kylo. So, yes, 'The Love Hypothesis' has deep nerd roots, and I mean that in the most affectionate way possible. Now to Tom might know him from 'Death on the Nile', 'Behind Her Eyes', or 'Vanity Fair'. He's got serious screen presence, brooding, charming, and effortlessly intense. Basically, he was built to play Professor Adam Carlsen. And when you factor in the fact that he's married to Daisy Ridley? That casting choice hits on so many online are losing it, naturally. One person wrote, 'He's married to Daisy Ridley. OMG full circle moment.' Another declared it 'the best uno reverse card in casting history.' Someone else chimed in with, 'Not Adam but Rey's husband playing Adam perfection.' Honestly? Fair let's not forget Lili Reinhart, who's not only starring as Olive but producing the film too. She's been vocal about wanting to do justice to this story, and between her casting and this cosmic Bateman-Ridley twist, it's safe to say the fans are being if you haven't read the book, or don't know your Adam Carlsen from your Adam Driver, there is still something for you in store. If you're into rom-coms, emotionally complex science nerds, or geek out over fan theories that somehow become real, 'The Love Hypothesis' deserves a spot on your Because this casting is chaotic in the best way. A character inspired by Daisy Ridley's Rey now played opposite her real-life husband? That's fan fiction logic turned cinematic reality. It's unhinged in the most deliciously meta way, and it's got the internet in a yeah, grab your popcorn, fire up the group chat, and get ready to spiral. This one's for book lovers, fandom kids, and anyone who lives for a full-circle moment. You couldn't script even if you tried.- Ends

Daisy Ridley's Husband Cast in Adaptation of Former Reylo ‘Star Wars' Fan Fiction

The behind-the-scenes story of an upcoming romantic comedy could, on its own, be a pretty fascinating movie. Here's the pitch. A young Star Wars fan writes a piece of Reylo (that's Rey and Kylo Ren for the non-shippers out there) alternative universe fanfiction. The fan is approached about turning the story into a novel, only, it can't be specific to Star Wars anymore. So the names change, but the intention and romance stay the same. That book becomes a smash hit bestseller, Hollywood comes calling, and when the movie version finally comes to fruition, the filmmakers cast the real-life husband of one of the actors who played the character who originally inspired the story. Roll credits. It's a little wild, a little convoluted, but exactly what has happened to author Ali Hazelwood with her debut novel, The Love Hypothesis. The story was originally published online as Head Over Feet, a an alternate universe collage romance between Daisy Ridley's Rey and Adam Driver's Ben Solo/Kylo Ren. Once it got picked up by an actual publisher, though, the romance stayed the same, but everything Star Wars was removed… save for the male lead being named Adam, after Adam Driver. And now, for the movie adaptation, Adam will be played by Tom Bateman, the British actor married to his Murder on the Orient Express co-star, Daisy Ridley. Yes, the same Daisy Ridley who played Rey in Star Wars. The other lead, named Olive, will be played by Lili Reinhart of Riverdale fame. So was the casting intentional? We don't know, but the wonderful harmony of it is impossible to ignore. And, frankly, it's pretty damn delightful too. Sure, most people who read The Love Hypothesis during its 10-month run on the New York Times bestseller list didn't know its Star Wars roots. And people who eventually see the movie, directed by Claire Scanlon and adapted by Sarah Rothschild, will never realize that either. But the people who do can certainly enjoy it on a whole other level. The Love Hypothesis joins a growing list of stories that started as fan fiction and eventually made their way into the book market, and then beyond to the movie and TV adaptation. The most famous is probably Fifty Shades of Grey, which was inspired by Twilight, though Dakota Johnson isn't married to Robert Pattinson in real life. At least not yet. Want more io9 news? A STAR WARS Sequel Trilogy Character Might Be Getting Their Own Spin-Off Film — GeekTyrant

It's been nearly six years since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hit theaters, and while we've had a steady stream of Disney+ series to keep the galaxy alive, the theatrical side of Star Wars has been quiet. But according to a new report, Lucasfilm might be looking at developing a spin-off centered on one of its characters. The scoop comes from entertainment insider Daniel Richtman, who claims Lucasfilm is currently 'discussing a spinoff film to the sequel trilogy.' While Richtman didn't name who the film would focus on, he added, 'Unclear for which character.' So no, we don't know who it is, but Rey is already getting her film, so it will be someone other than her. Daisy Ridley is set to reprise her role as Rey in a new film from director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. That film will reportedly pick up 15 years after Episode IX and follow Rey's efforts to rebuild the Jedi Order. Beyond that, Star Wars ' cinematic return officially kicks off with The Mandalorian & Grogu in 2026. Also in development are Shawn Levy's Star Wars: Starfighter , said to star Ryan Gosling, and James Mangold's untitled film exploring the origins of the Force. Whether or not this sequel trilogy spin-off actually happens remains to be seen. But I'm sure Lucasfilm is exploring all kinds of potential projects, whether or not they actually make it to the big screen… well, we all know how that goes.

Rey's Return to STAR WARS Reportedly Paused as Lucasfilm Prioritizes Other Projects — GeekTyrant

The Rey-centric Star Wars movie may be hitting pause… again. According to industry insider Daniel Richtman, the long-gestating New Jedi Order film, which would see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey under the direction of Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, is reportedly back on hold. Richtman says, 'The Rey movie is on hold once again, as both the Shawn Levy and James Mangold Star Wars films are moving forward first. The project is not canceled — just temporarily on hold.' This shift isn't entirely unexpected. After Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight exited the project, a new writer was never publicly confirmed. Despite that uncertainty, Lucasfilm still appeared to view the film as a priority… until now. The status of Rey's next chapter has been murky for a while. One moment it's full speed ahead, the next it's reworking behind the scenes. But don't count Rey out just yet. In fact, a previously report suggests she still plays a major role in Lucasfilm's long-term plans. 'Rey, the scavenger-turned-Jedi played by Daisy Ridley in the last three episode movies, is key to the franchise's next turn. That potentially puts Kinberg's trilogy story development, as early in its conceptual stages as it may be, on a collision course with the Rey standalone movie that is actively in the works with director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.' The report went even further, noting that Ridley's Rey is more than just another character. According to one unnamed source: 'She is the most valuable cinematic asset, in some ways maybe the only one, Star Wars has right now.' That might explain why writer-producer Simon Kinberg ( X-Men: Dark Phoenix ) is reportedly developing a new trilogy that could feature Rey in some capacity, though how it connects to New Jedi Order is still unclear. As for Ridley herself, she spoke about her return last year in an interview with Premiere magazine: "They simply asked if I wanted to do it, based on an idea, without the script being written yet. But if I hadn't been convinced by the concept, the movie wouldn't have been made. I took a day to think about it and I told myself that I had had great times making those films. 'This new adventure seemed fun to me, so why say no? My thoughts on the subject are quite simple: if I didn't think the story was worth telling, I wouldn't have come back." The project was said to be set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker , with Rey building a new Jedi Order from scratch. Whether that vision still stands or gets absorbed into another project remains to be seen. For now, the wait for Rey's return continues… again.

Dredd (2012) One of the mysteries surrounding Dredd is the involvement of writer Alex Garland. Did he take over for Pete Travis and direct the movie? After over a decade of rumors, Garland finally came clean this year to GQ, admitting to 'ghost-directing' the sci-fi action film. Knowing Garland's filmmaking style now, it's clear the Ex Machina director stepped in and improved Dredd. Based on the Judge Dredd comic strip, Dredd introduces audiences to Mega City One, an overcrowded and violent metropolis on the East Coast. Nearly 20,000 crimes are reported daily. The only semblance of the law exists with the judges — cops who are judge, jury, and executioner. The most prominent judge is Dredd (Karl Urban). The famed judge and a rookie judge (Olivia Thirlby) must restore order to a 200-story high-rise apartment run by drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey). With terrific special effects and gritty action, Garland might be the best sci-fi filmmaker currently in Hollywood. Stream Dredd on Max.
