Telangana achieves 70% of MNREGS target in two months

HYDERABAD: Telangana is rapidly implementing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS), having generated 4.53 crore person-days of employment by the end of May this financial year. This is against the 6.5 crore person-days allocated to the state by the Central government. With this, the state has already achieved 70 per cent of its target within two months, spending Rs 1,416 crore, including Rs 1,151.67 crore towards wages and Rs 191.03 crore on material purchases. The government is providing Rs 307 as the daily wage for each worker, as notified by the Centre. According to officials, the state government is ensuring timely payment of wages, even though the release of funds by the Central government is delayed in some instances. So far in 2025–26, the Telangana government has provided employment to 28.48 lakh individuals from 18.9 lakh households. On average, each household has received 24 days of work over these two months, with 1,127 households completing 100 days of work. As part of the employment guarantee scheme in rural areas, the government is prioritising works related to agriculture and allied sectors, achieving 50 per cent of its 60 per cent target for these areas. Under this initiative, over one lakh farm ponds, cattle and goat sheds, and plantation works are being undertaken, along with the construction of 31,000 Anganwadi buildings and CC roads. Meanwhile, as demand for MNREGS works increases, Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Minister Danasari Anasuya has written to the Centre, urging it to increase the person-days allocation to 12 crore. She has also sought an appointment with the Union Minister for Panchayat Raj and Urban Development to discuss the issue.

Telangana Cabinet meeting on June 23, decision on local body elections likely

HYDERABAD: The state Cabinet, which is scheduled to meet on Monday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, is likely to take a decision on holding local bodies elections in the state. Recently, Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Minister Danasari Anasuya alias Seethakka and Revenue and Housing Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy had hinted that the schedule for local body elections would be announced soon. The tenures of sarpanches, Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency (MPTC) and Zilla Praja Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) members ended last year. For the record, there are a total of 12,769 sarpanch seats, 5,717 MPTC and 538 ZPTC seats in the state. Besides the conduct of local body polls, the Cabinet is also likely to discuss the possibility of providing 42 per cent reservations to BCs in upcoming elections. As the Bill passed by the Assembly on enhancing BC reservations to 42 per cent has been sent for the President's approval, the Cabinet is likely to deliberate on how to go ahead with the BC quota issue. According to sources, the MPTC and ZPTC elections will be conducted first, after which the sarpanch polls will be held.

Harish Rao urges govt to release Panchayat Raj funds

Hyderabad: BRS leader T Harish Rao on Sunday demanded that the government release funds to the Panchayat Raj department, improve sanitation in villages, settle outstanding bills for former Sarpanchas and Panchayat secretaries, and regularise outsourced Panchayat Secretaries. The BRS leader addressed a letter to the Panchayati Raj Minister, Danasari Anasuya (Sitakka), on Sunday. Harish Rao stated that as part of the comprehensive development of villages, the previous BRS government, led by K Chandrasekhar Rao, appointed 9,350 junior Panchayat Secretaries in 2019. These secretaries, he noted, worked diligently for the development of Gram Panchayats as per government instructions. He added that due to the timely allocation of funds to Gram Panchayats and the efforts of local body representatives and Gram Panchayat officers, Telangana villages had become a model for the country in terms of development. However, since the Congress government assumed power, the situation has, he claimed, deteriorated. Due to the lack of fund releases, the development of Gram Panchayats has come to a standstill, sanitation has worsened, and villages are now in darkness due to a lack of street light maintenance. He further lamented that tractors, provided by the BRS government, are now being handed over to officials because villages are unable to afford diesel or pay RTA tax. The BRS leader listed a charter of demands and urged the Minister to address them immediately. These demands include: immediate release of funds related to Gram Panchayats; settlement of pending bills for former Sarpanchas and Panchayat secretaries for work already completed; regularisation of Panchayat secretaries working under the outsourcing system as Junior Panchayat Secretaries, as promised in the 'Abhayahastam' manifesto. He also called for special drives to be organised in villages during the rainy season to prevent the spread of seasonal diseases and improve sanitation. Additionally, he highlighted that sanitation workers have been facing severe difficulties due to non payment of salaries for the last three months and demanded immediate payment of their arrears. Rao expressed regret that the salaries of data entry operators who conducted the household survey in November last year have not been paid until now. He insisted that their salaries should be released immediately.
