ABC anchor David Muir 'in denial' as he reveals devastating loss: 'I don't know what I'm going to do'

David Muir admitted he was 'in denial' as he paid a special tribute to a beloved ABC World News Tonight colleague while announcing her departure after three decades at the network. The 51-year-old anchor bid farewell to stage manager Michele Mayer at the end of Tuesday night's episode, revealing that he got his hair cut and wore a full suit especially for her last day. After more than a decade working together, Muir revealed that Mayer was returning to her home state of Kentucky - and that he's going to be lost without her. Alongside archival footage, Muir affectionately referred to his colleague as 'Shelly' as he recounted her impressive history at ABC World News Tonight. 'There she is right there, the one person who is there every night who you don't see,' he began. 'Michele Mayer has been standing right next to that camera queuing me and so many other anchors: Peter [Jennings], Charlie [Gibson], Diane [Sawyer], for decades. 'She's been at ABC News for more than 30 years and if you look closely at this wide shot of the studio before we go on, the camera pans, Shelly with her hands on her hips and I always call out for her. 'Then as Michele knows more than anyone in these chaotic times right before we go on, our joke, I triple check we know what day it is.' Expressing shock over Mayer's departure, Muir continued: 'I'm still in denial about all this. I cannot believe that Shelly is leaving. My partner in crime out there. 'She's the one who's queuing me every single night, standing next to that camera. But Shelly, only for you, tonight I hope you notice that you're going to see my cuffs. 'The only reason anyone ever sees cuffs is because Shelly is always saying, "pull your cuffs down." I've got my watch on because Shelly likes it when I show up with my watch on – only happens once or twice a year. 'I've got a full suit on today for you, Shelley. As you know, jeans from the waist down behind that desk, but for you, the full suit because I know you don't dig the jeans. And I got a haircut - I got a haircut for you Shelly.' 'You deserve this Shelly,' Muir added. 'Go home to Kentucky, go be back with your family, your horses, and the beautiful countryside. 'What an 11 years this has been with you by my side. I don't know what I'm going to do.' Mayer started as a prompter operator for Peter Jennings back in the mid-1990s and then progressed to stage manager. She then became Sawyer's partner behind the scenes. Sawyer also had a special message for Mayer, in which she revealed the messages she'd relay while on-air. 'I just want all the wonderful people who watch world news to know, that when you're watching the person sitting at this desk, you're really also watching the coach behind the camera,' Sawyer said. 'Michele always there to say, "run along," or "slow it down," or "time to get out," or in my case she had signs printed out. Most often, [sign reads "sit up straight"].' Mayer is returning to her home state of Kentucky to 'catch her breath.'

Kelly Ripa admits she took 'very indecent photos' by David Muir's portrait at studio in NYC

Kelly Ripa admitted to taking 'very indecent photos' in front of David Muir's portrait inside their shared ABC studios in New York City. Kelly and husband Mark Consuelos welcomed guest David to their Live with Kelly and Mark morning show on Tuesday. During the show, Kelly and Mark couldn't stop complimenting David, who has served as the anchor for World News Tonight since 2014. Since they share the same network and studios, Kelly admitted to going to the World News Tonight area of the building to 'stare at him.' David mentioned the 'terrifying gigantic images of all of us in this building,' which led to Kelly to admit that she's got a lot of 'indecent photos' of herself 'standing in front of your picture that I can't show on the air.' Kelly said that the network told her she couldn't show the pictures because they were 'not suitable for broadcast.' Mark joked that 'HR was right next to her.' David took it a step further and said: 'I thought you were talking about the other photos. For years, she's like, "You just say when [and I'll] send!' Kelly simply added 'exactly.' She also playfully said she would call him by the nickname 'Commander Handsome.' They couldn't stop showering David with compliments during his appearance on the morning show. Mark even told David that looking at him was 'like looking into the sun.' Kelly and David have been friends for years, with Kelly even naming him in her 2022 memoir Live Wire. She wrote: To David Muir, you are the backbone and moral compass I need sometimes.' David has also joined Kelly and Mark, along with their three children Joaquin, Lola and Michael on vacation, including a 2023 holiday to Greece. David has served as the anchor for World News Tonight since September 1, 2014; seen in 2017 'You are a great grill master, your cheeseburgers are delicious,' she told David once on live TV, adding that 'Joaquin would rather eat at David's than anywhere else on Earth.' David has served as the anchor for World News Tonight since September 1, 2014. He took over the role after Diane Sawyer. David is also the lead anchor for any special coverage or breaking news for ABC News. It was previously held by anchor George Stephanopoulos, who had the role from 2014 until 2020.

Inside the private life of ABC anchor David Muir's sister Rebecca... including her VERY unusual career

While millions tune in nightly to see David Muir deliver the news, his sister Rebecca Muir is living a very different kind of dream - one that involves greenhouses, marmalades, and a cat named Muta. Far removed from the buzz of network television, Rebecca has found her bliss as a part-time flower farmer and full-time nature enthusiast in upstate New York. Based in Skaneateles, just outside Syracuse, Rebecca runs a small flower farm. According to her Instagram bio, she grows quince, arranges stunning seasonal bouquets, and documents her countryside lifestyle through serene photography that radiates peace. It's not exactly what people expect when they learn she's the sister of a national news anchor - but that's what makes it all the more charming. Her feed is filled with delicate floral arrangements, moody garden shots, and the occasional artsy selfie. She rarely appears on camera - a contrast to her brother's profession - but when she does, half of her face is typically hidden by flowers. Rebecca, who goes by Becky on Instagram, is also an artist and photographer. She works out of an old house that doubles as her art studio, where she crafts everything from botanical images to homemade marmalades. Her greenhouse is where most of the magic begins - rows of blooms cultivated with care, often later sold out of a quaint flower truck or used to create custom arrangements that she shares with her followers. She's also an avid reader. Her latest book club pick? A Thousand Feasts by Nigel Slater, a food writer known for blending recipes with memoir. It's an on-brand choice for someone who grows things and then turns it into art. Rebecca is married to Richard Malcolm, the general manager of the boutique Mirbeau Inn & Spa. Their daughter, Finan, graduated from Cornell in 2020 and was even featured on David's Instagram, suggesting just how tight-knit the Muir family really is. While David thrives in the studio, Rebecca seems to thrive in the soil. Her days revolve around seasonal cycles, flower markets, and plant care - a rhythm far from newsroom deadlines. It's a 'glamorous' life, but in the most grounded, off-the-grid kind of way. She isn't chasing the spotlight, but she's certainly curated a space that many would envy - a little Eden in upstate New York, filled with books, blooms, and artistically composed photos. And although she's the more private Muir sibling, her story serves as a reminder that success doesn't always look like bright lights and breaking news. She seems to be quite content with her greenhouse and quiet life on the farm.
