Arsenal swap deal suddenly collapsed with £92m target left gutted by mess up
Arsene Wenger was on the verge of completing a £92million move for Thomas Lemar in 2017, but the move collapsed at the eleventh hour, leaving the French star disappointed The collapse of Arsenal 's club-record deal to sign Thomas Lemar for £92million left the France international gutted. The then-Monaco star played an integral role in the French side's surprising Ligue 1 title win in the 2016-17 season. While the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Benjamin Mendy and Bernardo Silva were all allowed to depart the club in the summer of 2017, Lemar looked to be next as the move to the Gunners beckoned on Deadline Day. The Premier League side had agreed on what would have been a British transfer record fee at the time of £92m to sign the winger, but it was dependent on the sale of Alexis Sanchez to Manchester City on the same day. Pep Guardiola's side had put in a bid for the Chilean on the last day of the window which would have allowed Arsene Wenger to use the proceeds from the sale to buy Lemar. However, the move quickly unravelled after Lemar was set to go on international duty later that day. As he wasn't given enough notice about the transfer by Monaco, the move collapsed as he stayed put in France for an extra year while Sanchez remained at the Emirates despite having a deal in place with City. Ex-Gunners chief Dick Law revealed the details behind the breakdown of the move when speaking exclusively to Goal in 2019. "There were no formal offers for Sanchez until the end of the window when the Manchester City one came in," he said. "So then you run into a pretty simple calculation. "It was the end of the window, literally the last day, and we wanted to be in a competitive position for the Champions League the next season. Were we more likely to compete for a Champions League position with Sanchez or without him? The decision was, we would be more competitive with him. "We did try to get Thomas Lemar that day, but it didn't get done. We thought we had Lemar and then that would have meant Sanchez to Manchester City. It was as simple operation of using the Sanchez money to pay for Lemar. "We had a deal done for Lemar, Sanchez had a deal done with City. But Lemar had been called up for France and Monaco had played the thing out and they ended up playing it out too long. They didn't send a clear signal to the player before he left for the national team and when they did send that signal, Lemar was already there with the French national team on the day of their international match and the deal fell apart. "It was a shame because it would have been interesting to see Lemar at Arsenal, but you have to move on from these decisions and circumstances. You can't sit and dwell on what might have been." After staying put at Monaco for the 2017/18 season, Lemar was asked about the failed transfer during the season, and he admitted his sadness that it didn't work out. "I am not going to hide it; I was a bit disappointed," Lemar said in 2018. "But there is no point fixating on that. I have continued to work so that these clubs might come back for me in the following transfer window." His work certainly paid off as he signed for Atletico Madrid that summer for a reported fee of £62m and remains there to this day. Since leaving Monaco, he has, however, largely failed to live up to expectations - which no doubt has softened the blow for Arsenal - and has just 10 goals and 19 assists to his name from 186 appearances for Atletico. He was converted into a central midfielder by Diego Simeone in 2020, but has since struggled with injuries and form and has consequently made just 11 appearances across all competitions in the last two seasons combined. When does the transfer window reopen and why has it closed?
This summer's transfer dealings have been split into two windows, with the first now closed. There was a scaled down Deadline Day on Tuesday as the transfer window closed for the first time at 7pm UK time. Plenty of deals have already been done in the Premier League, with Manchester City especially busy having spent over £60m on Rayan Cherki and Rayan Ait-Nouri. Chelsea have already made a splash as well, beating a number of rivals to bring in Liam Delap from Ipswich Town. Premier League champions Liverpool have also been swift in replacing the outgoing Trent Alexander-Arnold by signing Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen. The Reds have also let back-up goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher depart for Brentford, where Mark Flekken has left for Leverkusen. The first transfer window opened on June 1, but deals can now not be done again, but only for a few days. The transfer window swings open again on Monday June 16 and will remain open until Deadline Day on Monday September 1. It will be a different Deadline Day to normal, though, as the window closes at 7pm UK time rather than the usual 11pm. The revamped Club World Cup has changed things this summer, with the tournament in America getting underway on June 15. The first transfer window was known as an 'exceptional registration period' as it was there to allow clubs involved in the competition to bring in players before the tournament. As FIFA's rules state that calendar year transfer windows cannot exceed 16 weeks, there had to be a break of a few days where it was closed. While the exceptional registration period was there to help the teams involved in the Club World Cup, all Premier League sides could use it. More Trending 'This is a dream for me. Honestly, to be joining a club like Manchester City and have the opportunity to make the next step in my career here is something very, very special,' he said. 'I have worked so hard for this all my life. I love this sport, and I can't wait to develop further here in Manchester with Pep and his backroom staff. 'Everyone knows how good City are – they have been so successful for many years now. The responsibility to help the team continue winning is something I want to embrace. 'I would only leave Lyon for a project I really believe in and everything at City suggests I can develop my game and help the team be successful in the future. I can't wait to show City fans what I can do.' Arsenal targeting shock move for Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga who's available for just £5MILLION this summer
HE'S A KEPA Arsenal targeting shock move for Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga who's available for just £5MILLION this summer Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) ARSENAL are targeting Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga to fill their No.2 void. The Gunners are on red alert with the Blues shot-stopper, 30 – who cost a record-breaking £72m back in 2018 – available with a release clause of just £5m this summer. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 3 Kepa Arrizabalaga spent last season on loan at Bournemouth Credit: Shutterstock Editorial Kepa has just 12 months left on his contract at Stamford Bridge, having spent last season on loan at Bournemouth, making 35 appearances in all competitions. It is understood Chelsea are happy to get Kepa off the books, and are in talks with AC Milan to sign 29-year-old Frenchman Mike Maignan, valued at around £21m. Mikel Arteta brought in Cherries keeper Neto on Deadline Day last term on loan after selling Aaron Ramsdale to Southampton for £25m. The Arsenal boss had hoped to sign Espanyol's Joan Garcia, 25, for around £25m to compete with No.1 David Raya next campaign. But it is understood that Barcelona are winning the race for Garcia, leaving Arteta to switch to other targets, and views the Kepa deal as a real bargain. Arteta has been a fan of Kepa for some time, valuing his ability to play out from the back, although there are doubts over whether Kepa would settle for a back-up option. SunSport understands that several clubs across Europe are also interested in the ex-Athletic Bilbao man, with some of them able to offer an appetising first-choice role. Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola would also like to sign Kepa on a permanent basis, but cannot offer European football as a sweetener. BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK 3 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE: ALL THE LATEST FROM THE SUMMER WINDOW Should the Kepa deal also fall through, it is understood Arteta will find an alternative, but wants to sort this position quickly with other areas of the pitch in need of bolstering. Arsenal do have two young keepers on their books: 16-year-old Jack Porter and 18-year-old Tommy Setford both made their senior debuts in the Carabao Cup last season. David Raya reveals Arsenal career changed overnight following two-hour meeting However, Arteta does not feel either are ready to take on such a big responsibility, while Setford could potentially head out on loan to gain some experience should the right opportunity arise, after joining from Ajax for £1m in July 2024. It is understood that Setford is highly rated by Arteta, viewing him as a first-team player of the future. Arsenal will also welcome back Karl Hein this summer, who spent last season on loan at Real Valladolid. Hein signed a new contract before going out on loan and it is currently unclear what Arsenal's plans are for him this summer.

Harry McKirdy has departed English League Two side Bromley, becoming a free agent after a short spell with the Ravens following his Easter Road exit in February. The Hayes Lane outfit confirmed the news as part of their retained list following the conclusion of their campaign which saw them finish 11th in the fourth-tier table. He scored twice in nine outings for Bromley is expected by many EFL commentators to be reunited with his former side Crawley Town next term. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The 28-year-old ex-Aston Villa prospect arrived at Hibs a from Swindon on the summer Deadline Day in 2022, and he endured frustrations far beyond football during his time in Edinburgh – including overcoming a serious health condition. He spent time out on at Swindon Town and returned for the pre-season last summer. Gray was happy to let forward McKirdy leave Hibs Hibs boss David Gray admitted that McKirdy, who made a total of 33 appearances for the Scottish Premiership third-placed finishers, had endured a 'difficult' time in the capital. And the gaffer said the 'termination' of his contract with half a season remaining suited everyone. At he time, Gray said: 'I wish Harry nothing but the best moving forward. His time at Hibs has been difficult, but he worked hard to get back to full fitness over the summer after missing the majority of last season. Due to the number of options we have in the forward areas, his game-time this season has been incredibly limited, which is why this termination works best for all parties involved.' McKirdy left Easter Road without scoring a single goal for Hibs – a statistic made less surprising by factoring in the health concerns that undermined his attempts to establish himself as a starter. The well-travelled forward underwent serious heart surgery in the summer of 2023, followed by a long and slow period of physical rehabilitation before even being able to train with the first team. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Mackay explains why mid-season clearout was key Speaking on Premier Sports' Scottish Football Social Club on Monday, Hibs sporting director Malky Mackay explained that letting five players leave mid-season - including McKirdy - was a key factor in the European football-clinching run. He explained: 'We did 55 transactions over the summer RE players. It was a squad that had four manager's imprints over it. Totally unbalanced. Players signed on lengths of contracts - and money - that you raised eyebrows at. We had to trim the squad down. Sometimes you want players to move on for football reasons but they don't for many reasons. 'It is not easy. You want to move the squad along. One thing that was picked on and criticised a little in January was that we didn't sign enough players. We did one bit of business in the way but biggest thing that we did was that five senior players left the club. That was a huge move for the culture of the club and the togetherness (of the squad). Certainly going forward, we managed to then sign up and extend Chris Cadden, Jordan Smith, Lewis Miller. We have Jamie McGrath on a pre-contract too.'
