Debina Bonnerjee On Rejecting Shows After Motherhood: 'TV Is A Commitment Forever'
Debina Bonnerjee also clarified that Gurmeet Choudhary has nothing to do with her being away from the screen. In fact, he is the one who always pushes her to get back to work. Debina Bonnerjee is all set to make her television comeback and will reunite with her husband, actor Gurmeet Choudhary, after a decade. The two, who tied the knot in 2011 and are parents to two daughters, will soon be seen in Pati Patni Aur Panga. Ahead of the show's premiere, in an exclusive interview with News18 Showsha, Debina opened up about her comeback and expressed excitement. 'It would be fun. After a very long time, we would both be doing something together. It's always fun to be with your partner, do something with your partner. So after a long time, we got the scope to do something together, and we thought, 'yeah, it should be fun. Let's do it'," she told us. The actress admitted that she decided to sign this show also because she thought that it might leave her some room to spend time with her daughters too. 'Whenever I was getting offers, I thought, 'Oh my God, it's like a commitment forever'. TV is like a commitment forever. You never know for how long you might be occupied. It is like being away from home, from kids for hours, not able to meet them. This is why I was also delaying (comeback)," she said. Debina revealed that she rejected a lot of projects earlier because the sets were too far or the number of hours makers wanted her to shoot would have impacted her daughters' parenting. 'The moment I heard where the sets are or about other requirements from me, I took a back step. Because by the time I would have returned home, my kids would have been asleep. Children cannot grow up on sets. It is not healthy," she shared. The 42-year-old actress, who rose to fame after playing the role of Sita in the television show Ramayan, explained that it is not easy to be a working mother. 'It is not equal. First of all, your body acts differently after you become a mother. You have to work doubly hard mentally. You do not get enough sleep. You constantly feel like you cannot leave your child; you have to take time for yourself also. Acting is not a 9-5 job. I have worked for 24 hours. I have seen Gurmeet also doing it. Last year, he was shooting for two shows. He was hardly at home. He could do it because I was at home. I am not sure if I can do what he was doing, where I do not know when I will return home," she said. However, Debina also clarified that Gurmeet has nothing to do with her being away from the screen. In fact, he is the one who always pushes her to get back to work. 'I somehow feel that Gurmeet comes across as a very supportive partner. He never asked me to stay at home. I did not leave home to shoot, but I have been shooting continuously from home. I think I have evolved into a content creator now. Time changes everything. I am very comfortable in this space also. Gurmeet has also been very supportive throughout. He is doing this show (Pati Patni Aur Panga) for me. He wants me to come back. He is the most supportive partner anybody would say," she said. True to his 'Atithi Devo Bhava' spirit, Chef Harpal obliged her request. As he responded in Bengali, Gurmeet was left stunned as he remarked, 'You can speak Bengali." To which, Chef Harpal replies, saying that he can speak 7 languages, prompting Krishna to crack a hilarious joke that left everyone in splits. The comedian quipped, 'Had you focused on cooking instead of learning languages, you would be a chef." Later, Chef Harpal Singh Sokhi included a Bengali dish in the challenge, something that had only been featured once on the show, and the kitchen lit up with the aroma of an iconic Bengali mithai, Fish-shaped Sondesh Kheer Kodom. I requested Chef Harpal to include a Bengali dish, and he agreed without hesitation! When he announced 'Fish-shaped Sondesh Kheer Kodom' as the challenge, I was thrilled." I consider myself lucky that I'm doing TV, OTT, and films. What more could one ask for?' The couple acknowledges how times have changed since their last joint project, especially with the rise of social media. 'You see me in vlogs. I shoot at home. My kids grew in front of you, my struggle with them, my weight loss journey. Along with this reality show, Guru is shooting for 2 more projects. It is a huge pressure for him. Gurmeet Choudhary and Debina Bonnerjee on Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi playing Ram and Sita: Curious to see how this new version of Ramayana shapes up
Having played one of Indian television's most iconic couples—Ram and Sita—Gurmeet Choudhary and Debina Bonnerjee have long cemented their place in the public consciousness. But they're not ones to rest on legacy. While Debina has been on a conscious pause from acting, choosing instead to immerse herself in motherhood, she makes it clear she's not done. 'I've been offered projects,' she says, 'but I'm waiting for the right one—something meaningful and creatively satisfying. I'm definitely open to returning, but on my own terms.' Gurmeet, meanwhile, has been actively exploring new terrain, particularly in the OTT space. 'It's opened up a new world of storytelling. It's raw, it's real, and it challenges you,' he says. 'I've enjoyed taking on characters that push me as an actor. There's still a lot I want to do—roles that break the mould. I'm hungry for that.' He's tight-lipped about upcoming projects, but teases that 'there's a lot happening behind the scenes. I'd rather let the work speak for itself.' As for whether filmmakers have fully tapped into his potential yet, he's clear-eyed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Adidas Three Shorts With 60% Discount, Limited Stock Available Original Adidas Shop Now Undo 'To an extent, yes. But I still feel there's more I can offer. OTT, thankfully, gives space for experimentation. That's what excites me right now.' The duo, who first became household names for portraying divine characters, still feel the weight and responsibility of those roles. 'Ramayana is not just a story—it's faith, history, and tradition,' says Gurmeet. 'You're not just playing a character. You're representing something sacred.' With Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi taking on the mantle in a new cinematic version, both actors are curious and supportive. 'It's an honour to have played Ram. It's a role that stays with you for life. I respect Ranbir as an actor, and I'm curious to see how this new version of Ramayana shapes up. Every generation deserves its own telling,' he adds. Debina agrees: Ranbir and Sai are incredibly talented, and I'm sure they'll bring their own grace and strength to these iconic roles. Ram and Sita are not just characters—they're emotions. I'm looking forward to seeing their interpretation.' But it's not just work that defines their narrative. Their bond is rooted in mutual growth. 'From Gurmeet, I've learned patience and resilience,' Debina says. 'He's my constant.' Gurmeet, in turn, says, 'Debina has taught me the power of emotional intelligence. Her love, especially as a mother, has reshaped how I see life and relationships.' Balancing intense work schedules with raising two young daughters isn't easy, but the couple is deliberate about how they manage it. 'Balance doesn't happen on its own—you have to create it,' says Debina. 'Even an hour of being fully present with the kids is better than a whole day distracted.' Meditation and journaling keep her grounded. For Gurmeet, it's about intention. 'We carve out 'us' time. Whether it's yoga together, short breaks, or just a phone-free meal—those little things matter. ' And when they do step away from it all, it's often to do something simple and joyful—like their recent visit to Candy City at Phoenix Marketcity Mumbai, a vibrant, immersive play space for children and families. 'It wasn't just for the kids—we loved it too,' says Debina. 'The Candy Infinity Room felt like walking into a dream. Watching our daughters explore it was magical.' Gurmeet adds, 'It's rare to find a place that lets kids go wild with imagination while giving parents a moment to breathe. It was the perfect escape.' In a career built on mythic characters and real-life connection, the two continue to move with purpose, refusing to be hurried by expectations. As Gurmeet puts it: 'We're not in a race. We're in a rhythm—and that's what keeps us grounded.' Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Eid wishes , messages, , and quotes !
