Van Mahotsav: UP to plant over 35cr saplings in July first week

Lucknow: In a major push to enhance green cover across Uttar Pradesh, the Yogi Adityanath govt is set to launch a state-wide plantation drive from July 1-7 as part of Van Mahotsav. The campaign aims to plant 35 crore saplings during the 2025 monsoon season, with 1.14 crore to be planted specifically along roadside stretches by the forest department. To ensure the success of this massive effort, over 52.43 crore saplings have been prepared across 2,586 nurseries spanning forest, horticulture, sericulture, and private sectors. The Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) will also join the drive by planting 2.5 lakh saplings along five major expressways, with the Bundelkhand Expressway accounting for the highest share of 1.2 lakh saplings. Mission director of the plantation campaign 2025, Deepak Kumar, said the initiative reflects Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's vision of a greener and sustainable Uttar Pradesh. "All preparations are complete, and we are ready to execute the largest plantation campaign in the country," he said. The coordinated drive will involve multiple govt departments and agencies working in tandem to improve ecological balance, reduce pollution, and contribute to climate resilience. Officials said the campaign would not only beautify roadsides and highways but also engage local communities in long-term environmental stewardship.

According to the statement, the Forest Department, which is the nodal agency for the plantation drive, has completed all preparations for the campaign. A total of 524.3 million saplings have been raised across 2,586 nurseries in the state to ensure the success of the initiative. In addition to roadside plantations, the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) will plant 250,000 saplings along expressways to further support the state's green agenda. The saplings will be planted near five major expressways — Bundelkhand Expressway, Purvanchal Expressway, Ganga Expressway, Gorakhpur Link Expressway, and Agra–Lucknow Expressway. The campaign is being carried out with the cooperation of various departments, reflecting a coordinated effort to increase forest cover and promote ecological sustainability across Uttar Pradesh. Maharashtra: 19-year-old NEET aspirant ends life after editing scorecard to hide poor marks in Latur; police probe underway

CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR: A 19-year-old BSc agriculture student from Rajasthan, who was studying in Latur, allegedly ended his life by hanging in his hostel room last week after struggling to cope with his NEET scores. He allegedly edited his scorecard to show 545 marks, but actually scored 170, police said. Latur superintendent of police Somay Munde told TOI, "We have registered a case and also seized his edited NEET scorecard." After student Deepak Kumar, a first-year student at the Agriculture College in Latur, was found hanging in his hostel room on June 19, the police recovered two NEET scorecards — one showing 170 marks and another 'doctored version' displaying 545 marks. Investigations revealed that the fake scorecard was shared by the student on his friends' WhatsApp group, earning him praise before the discrepancy was discovered by some of them. "He allegedly edited the original PDF using a cellphone application to display higher scores. He then allegedly shared the doctored scorecard with his friends," said a senior police officer privy to the investigation. According to the police, the student's edited scorecard raised suspicions due to a 13-digit application number discrepancy and a non-scanning QR code. The police believe the realisation of his forgery likely caused intense emotional distress, contributing to his alleged suicide. The police have ruled out the involvement of any organised racket or external agents in the manipulation. "There is no evidence suggesting that the student procured a fake scorecard from any agency or that he was part of any racket," Inspector Santosh Patil of the Shivajinagar police said. Counsellors familiar with such cases said it was not the first case of students digitally altering mark sheets to cope with the pressure of competitive exams. "Many students fake marks just to pacify parents temporarily or buy time for another attempt," a counsellor at the college said. Deepak gained admission through the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) quota and was known to be preparing simultaneously for NEET alongside his regular college coursework. Police are awaiting a forensic report of the cellphone for further details.

414 government primary schools in Prayagraj likely to face merger

Following the directive to merge government-run primary and upper primary schools with low student enrollment into nearby schools, the officials from the state's basic education department acknowledge that 414 schools in Prayagraj district have fewer than 50 students enrolled. Before the schools are paired, the benefits of the merger will be communicated to parents, community members, local officials, school teachers, and teacher unions. (FOR REPRESENTATION) A meeting in this regard has already been held, and according to the state government's directive, block education officers (BEOs) will now visit the identified schools and submit a proposal to the basic shiksha adhikari (BSA) for merging them with nearby schools. The proposals will be based on factors such as infrastructure facilities, accessibility, enrollment, inclusiveness, and local conditions and needs, officials explained. Confirming the development, acting BSA-Prayagraj Devbrat Singh stated that a meeting has been conducted regarding the merging of primary and upper primary schools in the district with low student count. 'A report in this regard from the BEOs is expected soon, following which further action will be taken in accordance with the government orders,' he said. Before the schools are paired, the benefits of the merger will be communicated to parents, community members, local officials, school teachers, and teacher unions, officials said. There are around a dozen schools in the district where student count is below 10, said officials. Among them, primary schools of Amarpur and Domhar of Shankargarh development block have just three and four students, respectively. LIkewise, the primary school of Dharhariya Nagar area has five and primary school of Kechuadih Dhobiyan Basti in Karchhana has five students. Primary schools of Harkhuriya and Naubasta of Shankargarh block and upper primary school at Madra in Uruwa have only six students each, said officials. Similarly, only seven students are enrolled in the upper primary school at Mauhariya in Shankargarh, nine students each are registered in primary schools of Kechuadih and Lagari Patti in Karachhana besides primary school at Tendua in Shankargarh and upper primary school at Akbar Shahpur in Koraon block. The Uttar Pradesh basic education department has directed to merge low-enrolment council schools with nearby better-performing schools to improve education quality and optimise resource use. The guidelines, released on June 16 by additional chief secretary Deepak Kumar, aim to streamline infrastructure, teaching staff, and learning resources by operating the paired schools as unified entities. This initiative is expected to improve teacher availability, encourage peer learning, strengthen smart classes and Bal Vatikas, and boost student enrolment while reducing dropout rates. According to officials, district magistrates have been assigned the responsibility of identifying low-enrolment schools, conducting field inspections, engaging with stakeholders, and submitting regular progress reports. Additionally, clear teacher responsibilities and a support system within BSA offices are to be put in place. PHOTO: Students studying in a government primary school in Prayagraj (HT File Photo)
