Ghaziabad: Admin issues directions for Kanwar Yatra preparation by June 30

Jun 22, 2025 06:02 AM IST Ahead of the upcoming annual Kanwar Yatra, the Ghaziabad district magistrate has directed different departments and local bodies to take up necessary civic works and complete preparations by June 30 to provide basic amenities to devotees in the wake of Kanwar Yatra, said officials. Ghaziabad: Admin issues directions for Kanwar Yatra preparation by June 30 The directions to make preparations to complete Kanwar Yatra in an orderly and safe manner includes timely completion of the streetlights work, cleaning of the bushes and garbage along roadsides, ensuring that there are no power cuts in the district and especially on the Kanwar route, ensuring that no non-veg shops/liquor operate on the Kanwar route and near temples, deployment of divers and boats at the Upper Ganga canal passing through Ghaziabad, among others. 'The directions have been given to different departments and local bodies to complete preparations in their respective areas on the Kanwar route by June 30. The movement of Kanwariyas will begin in the first week of July. So, the deadline for all preparations is June 30. The Kanwar Yatra is an annual pilgrimage taken up by devotees during the month of Shravan when they move primarily to Haridwar in Uttarakhand and bring Gangajal to their homes and temples, primarily afoot. A month gone, cashless plan for crash victims still awaits rollout across NCR

Noida: A month after the Centre announced a scheme promising cashless treatment worth up to Rs 1.5 lakh for road accident victims, the initiative is stuck in bureaucratic limbo in Noida and Ghaziabad. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In May this year, the Union ministry of road transport and highways rolled out the nationwide scheme — aimed at providing immediate medical care to accident victims during the crucial 'golden hour'. But even after all these weeks, hospitals across UP are awaiting official guidelines and implementation protocols from the state govt. "We need an order from the state govt to implement the scheme. They will give us a list of hospitals that need to be empanelled, the criteria for hospitals to be selected, and how the entire procedure will be carried out. These guidelines are expected soon. Once they come, we'll implement the scheme immediately," said Ghaziabad DM Deepak Meena. Until the scheme is implemented, accident victims will continue to bear hefty medical expenses. Soni, a domestic worker from Noida Sector 34, recently paid Rs 6,000 for her brother-in-law's treatment after a motorcycle accident. "We had no choice but to pay upfront. We didn't know about any cashless scheme. When we asked the hospital authorities if there was any govt scheme for poor people, they appeared clueless," she told TOI. Raj Kumar, who accompanied a relative to a private hospital after a recent bike accident, was equally helpless. "We have no idea about any such scheme. There is no medical insurance available either. My relative's treatment is weighing heavy on our pockets," he said, waiting at the emergency ward. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Private hospitals across both districts said they could not go ahead with the scheme without official communication. "We are awaiting orders from the govt and district administration," said the spokesperson for a private hospital in Noida Sector 62. Officials insisted the scheme would be rolled out soon. "It will be implemented through the Ayushman Bharat plan. Hospitals enlisted under Ayushman Bharat will provide free services to accident victims. The draft policy on its implementation is being prepared. The health department will notify soon," said Mayank Jyoti, ARTO (road safety). Meanwhile, on the other side of NCR — in Gurgaon and Faridabad — and other districts of Haryana, the state govt has issued fresh instructions to bring on board hospitals not empanelled under Ayushman Bharat under the accident scheme. The plan was earlier limited to health facilities under Ayushman Bharat. Low participation, however, has been a cause for concern because of unviable reimbursement rates and infrastructure limitations. On June 4, the directorate general of health services ordered the inclusion of other private hospitals to expand the scheme's reach. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) welcomed the move, but raised concerns over the lack of clarity on empanelment procedures and billing mechanisms. In other cities, like Indore, MP govt has asked all city hospitals to register for the scheme and coordinate with the district road safety committee for implementation. The scheme, to be implemented in coordination with the State Road Safety Council and National Health Authority, underwent pilot testing in six states and Union territories in March and received a budget allocation of Rs 272 crore for 2025-26. It promises free medical care up to Rs 1.5 lakh for road accident victims or treatment for the first seven days. The delay in its implementation is all the more concerning given India's road safety statistics. Over the past decade, road crashes have claimed more than 13 lakh lives nationwide. According to a report by the Law Commission of India, 50% of these deaths involved preventable injuries, where timely medical intervention could have saved lives. UP reported 33,088 accidents and 17,930 deaths through 2024 and in the first five months of this year, according to the road accident data dashboard.

Gallery of fame at Mahamaya stadium to honour athletes from Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad: A 'gallery of fame' featuring Ghaziabad's top-performing athletes is set to come up at the Mahamaya Sports Stadium as part of a district-level initiative to promote sports and motivate budding players. District magistrate Deepak Meena has directed the sports department to set up the gallery and also replace cash awards for athletes with customised sports equipment to support their long-term development. District sports officer Poonam Bishnoi said that the gallery will be prominently located at the entrance of the stadium. "It will be the first thing athletes see when they enter the stadium. The idea is to greet every player with stories of excellence and perseverance that have emerged from our own district. It will include framed portraits, brief biographies, and highlights of achievements of athletes who made Ghaziabad proud at national and international levels," Bishnoi said. Among those set to be featured here is Simran Sharma, a visually-impaired para athlete who won a bronze medal at the Paris Paralympics 2024 and was conferred the Arjuna Award the same year. Also to be featured are Lakshay Phogat, who clinched a silver medal at the Asian U-15 Boxing Championships in Jordan this April, and javelin thrower Pradeep Yadav of Modinagar, who bagged a silver at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like O novo dispositivo que os idosos usam para ajudar na neuropatia (dor nos nervos) A arte do herbalismo Undo Yadav, who has a motor disability, also received the Uttar Pradesh Laxman Award earlier this year. "I am extremely honoured to be part of the gallery. It's a proud moment and I hope it encourages more para athletes to aim high," he told TOI. The gallery's construction is part of a larger renovation plan for the stadium. TOI earlier reported that the state govt allocated Rs 16 crore for the stadium's overhaul in the last financial year. A detailed project report was prepared, tenders were awarded, and renovation work is set to begin soon. In a significant policy shift, the DM also said that, instead of cash prizes ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 30,000, athletes will now receive high-quality equipment suited to their discipline. "For instance, a badminton player might receive a professional-grade racket set. This will help them train more effectively," said Bishnoi.

Govt's action against unregistered gyms, pools spurs UP govt's revenue

Noida: Enforcement drives against unregistered gyms and swimming pools have earned UP govt 34% more revenue in the last two months compared to the same period last fiscal year. The district development and sports promotion committee has collected Rs 1.5 crore in April-May, up from its Rs 1.1 crore earnings the previous year. Officials said there was an increase in registrations of sports facilities, from under 20 in 2020 annually to over 1,300 this fiscal year. Of these facilities, 350 are gyms and 600 are pools. Anita Nagar, district sports officer, told TOI that the increased revenue has allowed the committee to reinvest in local sports infrastructure and athlete support, as 50 promising athletes have been awarded sports kits and cash prizes. She added that a boxing ring was installed at Dujana Stadium, and a badminton and volleyball court were constructed at Girls and Boys Correction Homes, respectively. Meanwhile, in Ghaziabad, district magistrate Deepak Meena chaired a meeting issued a set of directives aimed at streamlining sports development with a focus on regular monthly competitions, facility upgrades. As flight operations began on 12 routes, including the metro cities, earlier this year, the terminal witnessed a daily average footfall of 600 passengers, which is likely to reach its saturation point of 700–800 daily Wednesday, an AAI official told TOI the terminal building would be expanded to add taxi bays and improve other passenger amenities, like parking capacity, and an estimated five acres would be required for the civil terminal was developed in 2017 after seven acres (22,250 sqm) of land from Sikandarpur, next to the IAF base, was acquired to start the commercial flight operations that could effectively reduce the burden on Delhi's IGI Airport till the Noida International Airport took shape.
