BJP to get new UP chief? Who are the probables for the crucial party post?

There has been a growing buzz over the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) electing a new chief for its Uttar Pradesh unit, which was headed by Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary whose tenure ended earlier this year. (File photo/ANI) The speculation come after the BJP selected Ramchander Rao as the new Telangana unit president, even as the process to elect a new party chief has picked up pace in the saffron camp. The party has delayed the election for a new UP president for several months. The delay has been attributed to the Delhi Assembly Elections, as the central leadership was busy with the polls in the national capital, where the saffron camp got a massive victory after 27 years. What to expect from the election of a new UP BJP chief? The election of a new party chief in Uttar Pradesh is believed to be just a formality, as the only the candidate finalised by the party's high command will file nomination. The BJP is likely to select a new chief from the Schedule Caste (SC), in a bid to counter the Samajwadi Party's Pichda, Dalit and Alpsankhyak (PDA) formulation. Who are the frontrunners? Some of the frontrunners for the state doing the rounds are Vidya Sagar Sonkar and Ram Shankar Katheria, both from the SC category. Swatantra Dev Singh, Babu Ram Nishad and Dharampal Singh, belonging to the OBC category, are also among the frontrunners. If the party prefers an OBC leader for the top post, Swatantra Dev Singh is the frontrunner for the post, a senior BJP leader told Hindustan Times. Meanwhile, the central leadership has initiated the proceedings to complete the election process of state presidents of several states. National chief's selection after appointing UP president The process to select the new national president is also picking up pace in the BJP camp. According to the BJP's constitution, the party's national president could only be elected after completing the election process of 50 percent of its state units. The term of BJP's incumbent national president JP Nadda ended in January last year, but the national executive committee in January 2024 extended his term till June 2025 in view of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Party insiders have suggested that the new UP chief will be selected keeping in view the upcoming assembly polls in 2027. "The new state president is most likely to be from the SC category and the second option will be the OBC category," a senior BJP leader said. "The new state president will be elected keeping in view the 2027 assembly polls in the state," he added. The party is going all out to regain the lost ground after its below-par showing in the Lok Sabha polls in Uttar Pradesh last year. The party's poor performance in the state was attributed to the shifting of OBC and Dalit votes to the Samajwadi Party's PDA formulation. The BJP has managed to keep its caste umbrella intact in the last four successive polls in Uttar Pradesh—2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha and 2017, 2022 assembly polls. The diverse representation includes non-Jatav Dalits, non-Yadav OBCs and upper castes. However, the SP's PDA formulation succeeded in giving a dent to the BJP's vote share in the 2024 Lok Sabha poll, when it succeeded in bringing a large chunk of OBC and Dalits into its fold. The BJP's tally in Uttar Pradesh came down to 33 in the last Lok Sabha election from 62 in 2019.

Councillor rejoins AAP after expulsion by BJP

New Delhi: After being expelled from BJP , Ward 50 Mangolpuri-B councillor Suman Tinku Rajoura rejoined AAP. She took membership at AAP headquarters in the presence of Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj and MCD Leader of Opposition Ankush Narang. Rajoura left AAP before the assembly elections to join BJP. Rajoura, who joined BJP earlier this year ahead of the Delhi Assembly Elections , said, "I have come back to my family and am very happy. I committed the biggest crime by joining BJP, and I promise never to repeat that mistake." She also criticised BJP's recent demolition drive: "BJP never stands with the public, as seen in the failed promise of 'Jahan Jhuggi, Wahan Makaan.'" On June 9, BJP expelled the councillor for six years for alleged "anti-party" activities and voting 'against' the party line in the Rohini Zone of the municipal corporation. From 2014 to 2025: How Modi redefined India's political and economic landscape

From policies that further prosperity to driving the economy to reach the fourth spot in the world, PM Modi has worked to make a name for India on the global stage through his ideas and actions in the past 11 years read more Prime Minister Narendra Modi will complete 11 years in office on June 9. The National Democratic Alliance's decade-long governance under PM Modi's vision has been marked by development in both the political and economic landscape. From policies that further prosperity to driving the economy to reach the fourth spot in the world, PM Modi has worked to make a name for India on the global stage through his ideas and actions in the past 11 years. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Here's a look at how this change came to effect: New building for Parliament India has come a long way since the British left in 1947. However, their vestiges remain in the form of buildings and architecture across the country. For 73 years, lawmakers had to draft blueprints of India's development in a British-made structure, that is, the old Parliament. Prime Minister Narendra Modi carries the 'Sengol' in a procession before installing it in the Lok Sabha chamber at the inauguration of the new Parliament building, in New Delhi, Sunday, May 28, 2023. PTI Under PM Modi, the central government changed this. In 2023, the prime minister inaugurated the new Parliament House of India, which now serves as a pillar of the country's heritage. The inauguration ceremony included traditional rituals such as a havan and the installation of the Sengol, a sacred sceptre, behind the Speaker's chair in the Lok Sabha chamber. Rise of BJP at the Centre and in states PM Modi did not just help the Bharatiya Janata Party dominate the centre, but also paved the way for the party to expand its footprint across India. The BJP, along with its ally parties, are now ruling 19 states and two union territories. The latest victory came during the Delhi Assembly Elections in February when the party dethroned the Aam Aadmi Party's rule to make a comeback in the national capital. Party workers and supporters celebrating BJP's success in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh state assembly elections outside the BJP headquarter, in New Delhi on Monday. PTI This expansion of NDA governance marks a historic milestone, with the alliance now overseeing a population of approximately 920 million people, solidifying its dominance in India's political landscape. End of the Congress-led political power In 2014, a new age of politics was heralded in India. PM Modi's BJP ended the Indian National Congress's 10 years of rule under former prime minister Manmohan Singh. The Grand Old Party has ever since been the largest Opposition in India. BJP has now emerged as India's dominant political force, securing consecutive majorities in the 2014, 2019 and 2024 general elections. This period marked a shift from a multi-party system to a more centralised political landscape, with the BJP consolidating support among various social groups, including rural voters, women, and marginalised communities. In fact, PM Modi is the first prime minister after Jawaharlal Nehru to have won three consecutive parliamentary elections. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD End of Article 370 In 2019, the central government took the bold step of abrogating Article 370 that gave Jammu and Kashmir its special status and split the region into two Union Territories – J&K and Ladakh. Supporters wave BJP's flags at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's helicopter, during a public meeting ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, at Kartar Nagar in New Delhi. PTI The abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019 significantly transformed Jammu and Kashmir by integrating it fully into India's constitutional framework. This move enabled the application of central laws, such as the Right to Education and land acquisition compensation statutes, which were previously inapplicable. One nation, one tax PM Modi revolutionised India's taxation system by introducing 'One Nation, One Tax' that established the Goods and Services Tax (GST), which was implemented on July 1, 2017. This landmark reform unified the country's complex tax structure by subsuming various central and state taxes into a single tax, aiming to simplify the taxation process and promote economic integration. The GST was officially launched at midnight on June 30, 2017, with a special session held in the Central Hall of Parliament. Finance Bill of 2017 In 0217, the central government under the BJP unveiled the Finance Bill, which is seen as a significant legislative measure introduced in India to implement the financial proposals of the administration. It encompassed over 40 amendments across various laws, aiming to enhance transparency, curb black money, and streamline governance. Key provisions included making Aadhaar mandatory for filing income tax returns and obtaining a Permanent Account Number (PAN), imposing a cap of Rs 2 lakh on cash transactions to discourage unaccounted money, and removing caps on corporate donations to political parties while mandating anonymous contributions through electoral bonds. The bill also helped to restructure several tribunals, granting the central government greater control over their functioning.

Setback for Arvind Kejriwal: 13 AAP councillors in Delhi leave party to float new outfit. Know why

In a major setback to former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, as many as 13 councillors of the Aam Aadmi Party resigned from the party on Saturday, citing halted development work and rising internal conflict as the reasons for their move. In the latest political twist at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the 13 AAP councillors announced the formation of a breakaway outfit - Indraprastha Vikas Party, PTI said in a report. 'In the two and a half years since our election, no development work has been carried out. The party was too busy with internal conflicts and blame games,' senior councillor Mukesh Goyal was quoted as saying by PTI. 'We repeatedly raised our concerns with the leadership, but no one listened,' he added. AAP has not yet issued a statement regarding the setback. The anti-defection law does not apply to municipal bodies, including the MCD. While Mukesh Goyal will serve as the president of the Indraprastha Vikas Party, veteran municipal figure Hemchand Goyal will lead the outfit. Other AAP leaders including Dinesh Bharadwaj, Himani Jain, Usha Sharma, Sahib Kumar, Rakhi Kumar, Ashok Pandey, Rajesh Kumar, and Anil Rana, will be part of the newly floated party. Mukesh Goyal further alleged that elected councillors were not being allotted budgets to carry out developmental work in their respective wards. 'We want to focus on real work for the people of Delhi. We want the House to function smoothly and ensure that the policies are implemented in public interest,' he stressed while clarifying that the move was limited to MCD. On April 25, AAP lost control over the MCD months after losing the Delhi Assembly Elections, as the BJP returned to power at the corporation after two years. BJP's Raja Iabal was elected Delhi's new mayor, while AAP chose to avoid the elections. Notably, three civic bodies, East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC), North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), and South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), were re-unified into a single entity on May 22, 2022, as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
