Setback for Arvind Kejriwal: 13 AAP councillors in Delhi leave party to float new outfit. Know why
In the latest political twist at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the 13 AAP councillors announced the formation of a breakaway outfit - Indraprastha Vikas Party, PTI said in a report.
'In the two and a half years since our election, no development work has been carried out. The party was too busy with internal conflicts and blame games,' senior councillor Mukesh Goyal was quoted as saying by PTI.
'We repeatedly raised our concerns with the leadership, but no one listened,' he added.
AAP has not yet issued a statement regarding the setback.
The anti-defection law does not apply to municipal bodies, including the MCD.
While Mukesh Goyal will serve as the president of the Indraprastha Vikas Party, veteran municipal figure Hemchand Goyal will lead the outfit.
Other AAP leaders including Dinesh Bharadwaj, Himani Jain, Usha Sharma, Sahib Kumar, Rakhi Kumar, Ashok Pandey, Rajesh Kumar, and Anil Rana, will be part of the newly floated party.
Mukesh Goyal further alleged that elected councillors were not being allotted budgets to carry out developmental work in their respective wards.
'We want to focus on real work for the people of Delhi. We want the House to function smoothly and ensure that the policies are implemented in public interest,' he stressed while clarifying that the move was limited to MCD.
On April 25, AAP lost control over the MCD months after losing the Delhi Assembly Elections, as the BJP returned to power at the corporation after two years.
BJP's Raja Iabal was elected Delhi's new mayor, while AAP chose to avoid the elections.
Notably, three civic bodies, East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC), North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), and South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), were re-unified into a single entity on May 22, 2022, as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

Delhi CM announces campaign for cleanest constituency, Rs 1 crore reward
New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday announced cash rewards ranging from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 1 crore for the cleanest RWA, ward, and assembly constituency, based on their performance in the 'Delhi Freedom from Garbage' cleanliness drive. During a preparatory meeting for the 'Delhi Freedom from Garbage' cleanliness drive aimed at transforming the capital into one of the cleanest and greenest cities in the country, Gupta said the best-performing Resident Welfare Association (RWA) will be awarded Rs 25 lakh, while the second and third positions will receive Rs 15 lakh and Rs 10 lakh, respectively. The cleanest ward will get Rs 50 lakh, and the cleanest assembly constituency will receive Rs 1 crore in funding, she added. RWAs and organisations participating in the campaign are required to upload before-and-after photos on a dedicated portal, which will be used to evaluate performance and disburse the prize money, she added. Gupta said Rs five crore has been allocated to the MCD for the campaign, assuring full government support to all those contributing to a cleaner Delhi. 'We are writing a golden chapter in Delhi's history. For the first time, agencies like the MCD, Delhi government, PWD, Delhi Police, and others are working together in full coordination," Gupta said, urging every citizen to take ownership under the campaign's motto 'Meri Delhi, Meri Zimmedari" (My Delhi, My Responsibility). The drive will run from August 1 to 31, with the first two days focused on clearing backlogs in schools, hospitals, and offices. Every Saturday and Sunday, efforts will be concentrated on unauthorised colonies and JJ clusters. Special clean-up drives are also planned at Yamuna ghats on August 14, 21, and 28, while Ring Road will be cleaned on August 29 and 31. Meanwhile, taking a dig at the previous AAP government, Gupta said it had created a negative image of Delhi but under the leadership of the prime minister, a 'positive and united front" is now working to address the city's long-standing issues starting with the problem of garbage. Cleanliness must not be limited to VIP zones: Sood
New Delhi: Chief minister Rekha Gupta discussed the month-long city-wide cleanliness campaign with ministers and senior civic officials at Civic Centre on Tuesday. The campaign will start from Aug 1. Gupta said, "For the first time, agencies like MCD, PWD, Delhi Police and others are working together in full first two days of the drive will focus on schools, hospitals and offices. AAP slams BJP government over waterlogging in Delhi
NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday lashed out at the BJP government in Delhi over waterlogging in the city , sarcastically calling it a "marvel" of the four-engine model. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday visited ITO crossing in central Delhi and conducted an inspection after waterlogging was reported in the area. Gupta said that her government has sought a detailed report on every spot. Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh hit out at the AAP and said that the waterlogging situation wouldn't have risen had they worked sincerely. He alleged that the AAP did no real work when it was in power and only indulged in corruption. After heavy rains battered Delhi on Tuesday, visuals from various parts of the city showed long lines of vehicles stuck on waterlogged roads. Highlighting severe waterlogging in Connaught Place after just 10 minutes of rain, AAP supremo and former chief minister questioned the effectiveness of the "four-engine" government. "When this is the condition of Connaught Place, the heart of Delhi, it's not hard to imagine the state of the rest of the city. Just 10 minutes of rain has turned the roads into ponds. Attacking the city government over waterlogging, senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia told a press conference, "Within four months of their rule, the BJP government has made people cry from private schools fees, electricity bills to waterlogging. How will cleaning be done when you will do corruption in the cleaning equipment and salary of sweepers?" AAP MLA Punardeep Singh Sawhney echoed similar sentiments and shared a video of north delhi's Civil Lines area, where both lanes of a road stretch were flooded. "Delhi's Chief Minister @gupta_rekha ji and the LG's house are a 5-minute walk from here, perhaps they like a Venice-like view, which is why arrangements have been made for rainwater to keep pooling here. The AAP shared a video on X of a man lugging his motorcycle through a waterogged Zakhira underpass. "PWD Minister @p_sahibsingh ji, you were saying that your government has made proper arrangements to deal with waterlogging, so what is this?" the party asked in a post in Hindi. When the AAP was in power, the BJP often slammed it over waterlogging and accused it of failing to de-silt drains. The chief minister said that water was pumped out within 30 minutes to 45 minutes from the area. "All our teams are alert and officials are taking stock of waterlogging. There were places where water accumulated, but it was drained out timely. I have spoken to local here at ITO and they said that the water receded within half an hour to 45 minutes," she told reporters.
