Who will be the next Dalai Lama? As he turns 90, Tibetan leader is making plans

T ucked away behind a small green gate off a bustling street in Dharamshala, a former British hill station in northern India, schoolchildren in pristine blazers play in the intermittent monsoon rains. They may not know it, but it's possible that one of them might be the future spiritual leader of a six million-strong community of Tibetans. Outside, the city is buzzing. Next Sunday, July 6, the 14th Dalai Lama will turn 90. Along with his celebrations he will also address, after 88 years as the figurehead of the Tibetan people, the question of his succession. He is expected to announce that when he dies a living successor will take up his mantle; probably a young child just like he was when he was chosen. 'It would be best if he stays longer, until 113,' says nine-year-old Tenzin Wangmo, at the TCV school for Tibetan children. Her classmates are preparing to perform traditional guitar and dancing for next week's celebrations.

3 Dead and a Dozen Missing as Torrential Rains Cause Flash Flood in North India

Three people died and at least a dozen are feared missing after being swept away in a flash flood triggered by torrential rains in the north Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, local authorities said on Thursday. A rescue operation has been launched to trace the missing, said Dinesh Sharma, a local government spokesperson in Kangra. The town is about 18 kilometers (11 miles) from Dharamshala, a popular tourist destination known for its Tibetan culture and as the home of Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama. Sudhir Sharma, a lawmaker from Dharamshala, said in a social media post that at least 15 to 20 workers resting in a temporary shed near the site of a hydroelectric power project were swept away after water levels at a local reservoir rose suddenly late Wednesday. In a status report issued Thursday, the state government confirmed at least eight people were missing in Kangra and three in nearby Kullu. The authorities have evacuated around 50 stranded tourists to safer places in the state. The state government confirmed three people died, but did not provide details. Flash floods and cloudbursts are common in India's mountain states, such as Himachal Pradesh, during the monsoon season. Deforestation to make way for infrastructure development and expansion of hydroelectric power projects has often led to calls by critics for environmental accountability and disaster preparedness in such states.

Dalai Lama to make announcement about his reincarnation during upcoming Tibetan Religious Conference

Dharamshala: The Tibetan Buddhist leaders will attend the 15th Tibetan Religious Conference from July 2-4 in the North Indian hill town of Dharamshala. Tibetan spiritual leader, the 14th Dalai Lama, is expected to make an announcement regarding talks about his reincarnation issue during the upcoming conference here. Dalai Lama is turning 90 on July 6. The Tibetan Buddhist leaders, including heads and representatives of all four sects, Sakya, Kagyu, Nyingma, and Gelug, will meet the Dalai Lama in July. However, the Karmapa Rinpoche, the head of the Kagyu sect, will not attend the event, and his absence will certainly make the Tibetans unhappy. President of the Central Tibetan Administration, Sikyong (Political Leader) Penpa Tsering told ANI, "Since we came into exile, all the Buddhist traditions and the pre-Buddhist traditions inside Tibet, we used to meet periodically, so during this cabinet, this is the first time we are meeting." "We also timed it in such a way that there is only one document that is available reincarnation September 2011 document, which talks about, when Dalai Lama will reach the age of 90, then he would take certain decisions or consultation with others, and this year it's going to be Dalai Lama90th birthday," Sikyong said. Commenting on Chinese interference, Sikyong said, "These questions of spirituality and government interference, particularly coming from a Communist government that does not have faith in any of these things. It's a cross interference in the religious freedom of the Tibetan people, and it does not justify in any way. Therefore, they should be more concerned about the living 14th Dalai Lama. They should talk with him and resolve the Sino-Tibetan conflict, rather than thinking about using the next Dalai Lama as a political tool." Namgyal Dolkar Lhagyari, a member of the Tibetan Parliament in exile, told ANI, "We all are aware of the past event, especially of the 2011, where 14th Dalai Lama has very categorically mentioned that when he is 90, he will be making some important announcement in regard to his reincarnation or emanation before death." Tenzin Tsundue, a Tibetan activist, told ANI, "This conference of Tibetan Buddhist leaders is a very important one. They are likely to meet with the Dalai Lama consultant, who will also give their suggestion, especially regarding the future reincarnation of the Dalai Lama."
