Consumer body fines Rs 35,000 for overcharging passenger for post check-in purchase
Ajmer: The District Consumer Commission has imposed a fine of Rs 35,000 on Bird Travels Pvt Ltd, operator of Viet Jet Airlines, for unfair trade practices after the airline charged a passenger extra luggage fee for food items purchased after check-in. The commission also directed the airline to refund the excess amount with interest and compensate the passenger for harassment. According to the complaint, Vijay Prakash Tatwedi, a resident of Ramnagar, had booked a flight from Ahmedabad to Hanoi, Vietnam on Aug 3, 2023. Viet Jet allows one carry-on bag up to 7 kg. At the airline's check-in counter at Ahmedabad airport, Tatwedi was informed his luggage was 1 kg over the limit, and he paid Rs 1,410 as an additional fee. Later, after clearing security, he purchased 300 grams of sweets from an airport outlet. At the boarding gate, a Viet Jet staffer reweighed his bag and claimed it was 3 kg overweight, demanding an additional Rs 4,232. Ghaziabad Man Gets Insurance For Stolen Car After 22 Years. What To Do And Mistakes To Avoid
Despite filing an FIR and notifying the insurer and bank, Puneet Agarwal's claim wasn't processed, leading him to seek help from the consumer forum Car thefts are on the rise across the country, affecting both small towns and major metro cities. While vigilance remains important, understanding the insurance claim process has become equally essential in such cases. Recently, a resident of Ghaziabad experienced this firsthand. Although his car was insured and he believed it was secure, the insurance company failed to meet expectations when it was time to file a claim. In a significant ruling that underscores consumer rights, Puneet Agarwal of Ghaziabad has finally received his insurance claim for a stolen car 22 years after the incident. The car theft occurred during his Haridwar Yatra in 2003, but the insurance company initially refused to pay out. Agarwal took the matter to the District Consumer Commission, which ordered the company to pay 75% of the claim amount and Rs 5,000 as compensation. Agarwal's car was insured, and upon theft, he promptly lodged an FIR and informed National Insurance Company Limited along with ICICI Bank, his loan provider. However, despite following the correct procedures, the insurance claim was not processed, forcing Agarwal to approach the consumer forum. At city malls, parking fees rival the cost of your movie ticket
Chennai: Theatre snacks are not the only thing burning a hole in Chennaiites' pockets; parking fees in the city can cost as much, or more. While cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Kolkata have either flat rates or nominal parking fees as low as 20, Chennai stands out for charging exorbitant parking fees of 80 for the first hour and 40 for every hour. Akshay Kumar, an IT professional, said: "The current rate is 100 for two hours, and 90 for each extra hour. Most films run longer, and the multiplex I go to often delays shows by 30 minutes. I end up paying 200 or more just for parking. That's almost the cost of a movie ticket." While hearing a recent case filed by V Arun Kumar against a mall, which charged 80 for his two-wheeler for two hours, a consumer forum said it was an unfair trade practice. Under Section 39(1)(g) of the Consumer Protection Act, the District Consumer Commission can direct a business to discontinue an unfair trade practice. If it fails to comply, the complainant can seek execution; be it compensation, attachment of property, or even arrest. "However, one ruling can't change the entire industry unless it comes from the high court. The non-compliance becomes contempt of court," said advocate Sanjay Pinto. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Beyond legality, many say the issue is one of fairness. "In places like Dubai, malls give four to six hours of free parking. If misuse is a concern, validation through shopping bills can work," said advocate Akhil Bhansali. Sujith G, an entrepreneur, calls the fee structure exploitative. "Parking is built as a part of the facility; it's not a revenue model," he said. "Free parking may not be possible everywhere. However, there needs to be a cap on parking fees to prevent exorbitant rates and fleecing of customers," said Sanjay.

Lack of scheme awareness not fault of claimant, rules Chhattisgarh consumer court in Rs 4 lakh payout order
RAIPUR: The State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has directed the District Cooperative Union and Forest Produce Committee to pay Rs 4 lakh as compensation to the family of a tendupatta collector who died in an accident, citing deficiency in service and overturning an earlier decision by the District Consumer Commission, Rajnandgaon. The state commission held that the claimant's lack of awareness was reasonable. The claim was filed by Santoshi Patel, wife of the deceased Komal Patel, a resident of Gopaltola, Salhewara in Khairagarh-Chhuikhadan district. Komal was a registered collector with the Forest Produce Committee, Salhewara, from 2019 to 2021. He died of electrocution on October 11, 2021. Under the Shaheed Mahendra Karma Tendupatta Collector Social Security Scheme, the nominee is entitled to Rs 2 lakh for natural death and an additional Rs 2 lakh for accidental death. However, Santoshi's claim, submitted on July 2, 2022, was rejected by the committee on grounds of delay, stating it exceeded the 90-day limit. Challenging the decision, Santoshi approached the District Consumer Commission, which upheld the committee's stance. However, on appeal, the State Commission, led by Justice Gautam Chourdiya and Member Pramod Kumar Verma, found merit in her claim. The Commission noted that while the collector's remuneration card listed several insurance schemes—such as Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana, Atal Samooh Bima Yojana, and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana—the Shaheed Mahendra Karma Scheme was not mentioned. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo It held that the claimant's lack of awareness was reasonable. After examining the scheme details, the bench ruled that Santoshi was eligible for Rs 4 lakh under the accidental death provision. The respondents have been ordered to pay the amount within a month, along with 6% annual simple interest from the complaint filing date—October 6, 2023—till the date of payment. Additionally, Rs 20,000 has been awarded for mental agony, and Rs 10,000 towards legal costs. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Eid wishes , messages , and quotes !
