Madhya Pradesh: Bhind district administration imposes Rs 20,000 fine on 7 schools for overcharging students for textbooks; refunds ordered

Bhind administration penalized seven private schools. The schools overcharged students for textbooks. Each school faces a Rs 20,000 fine. Collector Sanjeev Srivastava ordered the action after parent complaints. Schools must refund the excess amount. They also need to display government-approved rates. The MP Parent Association supports the move. Authorities will conduct inspections to prevent future violations. BHOPAL:The Bhind district administration imposed fines of Rs 20,000 each on seven private schools after discovering they overcharged students for textbooks beyond authorised rates. District Collector Sanjeev Srivastava initiated an enquiry following parental grievances about schools collaborating with booksellers to charge inflated prices. The investigation was conducted by a team led by the District Education Officer. "The administration imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on each of the seven schools running classes from 1 to 8. They have also been directed to refund the amount to all those students from whom more money was charged for books than the prescribed rate," said Collector Shrivastava. The investigation uncovered definitive proof of schools compelling students of classes 1 to 8 to purchase textbooks at prices substantially above market rates, thereby breaching educational standards and imposing undue financial strain on families. The authorities have cautioned that future breaches would result in more severe penalties. The District Education Office distributed directives to all private schools in Bhind regarding book pricing. The institutions must openly display govt-sanctioned rates and cannot mandate purchases from particular vendors. Parents are encouraged to notify the district authorities about any overcharging incidents. For accountability purposes, schools must now document all book transactions comprehensively. The authorities will conduct periodic inspections to curb such unfair practices. The MP Parent Association endorsed these enforcement measures, observing that such financial exploitation became routine recently. "The Bhind district administration's intervention set a precedent for other regions facing similar issues," said Association General Secretary, Prabodh Pandya. The non-compliant schools received instructions to return excessive charges to parents. They are required to submit detailed reports outlining preventive measures against future violations. The District Education Officer will supervise the execution of these remedial steps. This enforcement initiative forms part of comprehensive measures to oversee private educational establishments and ensure affordable quality education. Officials have stressed that whilst private schools are essential educational providers, they must function within regulatory frameworks and uphold ethical standards.

Fundraising event to relocate historic 118-year school

KOTA KINABALU: As preparation for its historic relocation, Sung Siew Secondary School in Sandakan launched the Onward Sung Siew Run (OSSR) on July 5, celebrating its 118th anniversary while raising funds for its new school building. Hundreds of participants, including students, alumni and community well-wishers, flooded the school grounds for the event, which featured 1km and 3km competitive races and family-friendly walk. The run marks the first major fundraiser for the school's highly anticipated move, aiming to secure a modern learning environment for future generations. Sabah Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, a proud alumnus, hailed the relocation as 'a transformative leap for education in Sandakan.' 'This isn't just about a new building. It's about building the future,' said Joachim, who also serves as Sabah's minister of Local Government and Housing. 'For 118 years, Sung Siew has shaped leaders. Now, we ensure it continues to do so with facilities that match its legacy.' The move will expand learning spaces for growing student needs, modernise facilities to foster innovation and preserve the school's heritage while embracing progress. Joachim proposed making the OSSR an annual event, ensuring sustained support for the relocation and promoting community unity. Key figures in attendance were Sandakan MP Vivian Wong Shir Yee, Tanjong Papat assemblyman Datuk Frankie Poon Ming Fung, Datu Roslih Datu Siabok from the District Education Office and Sandakan Municipal Council president Walter Kenson. School leaders present included Board of Governors chairman Vun Soon Chong, Alumni Association president Johnny Lim and Principal Kwok Chee Yen. The event's success was powered by teachers, parent volunteers, corporate sponsors and over 100 student helpers. While the fundraising tally will be released next week, early estimates suggest strong progress toward the relocation goal.

KENINGAU: The collaboration between the District Education Office and schools here in field of sports reflects the inclusive policy currently being pursued by the State government in line with the aspirations of Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ). Minister of Youth and Sports, Datuk Ellron Angin, said he wants to see the young generation today not only physically active and competitive but also have strong humanitarian values. 'Both sports and physical education are part of the same education system, though their approaches may differ. 'Sports are based on specific skills, while physical education focuses on the physical development and health of students,' said Ellron when officiating the 2025 Keningau District Schools Sports Council (MSSD) Under-12 Rugby Championship, held at the SK Kg Biah field. In this regard, Ellron expressed his pride in seeing how sports are being used as a platform for unity and character development. 'We are not just building physical strength, but also shaping identity, enhancing mental resilience, and instilling noble values such as discipline, teamwork, mutual respect, and sportsmanship regardless of background and ability,' he said. At the same time, Ellron affirmed his belief that every child has their own potential and unique talents. He said all that is needed is opportunity, and through such tournaments, a space has been created for all students to shine, compete healthily, and learn to collaborate. 'Success will follow with dedicated effort and persistent training,' he added. He also noted that each player has their own strengths, advantages, and unique traits but most importantly, they share a strong fighting spirit. 'Today, these players stand on the same field with one goal to chase success in sports. 'But remember, winning is not everything. What matters more is the courage to try, the spirit to keep challenging oneself, and the resilience not to give up easily,' he added, motivating the crowd. In any situation on the field, on the track, or in life, he urged them never to fear falling, because those who fall and rise again are the true winners. Ellron who is also Sook Assemblyman, concluded with hopes that the success of this year's rugby championship will continue, and that more such initiatives will be implemented across districts throughout the state of Sabah. Meanwhile, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Ulu Senagang emerged as the cup champion of the 2025 Keningau District Schools Sports Council (MSSD) Under-12 Rugby Championship. The cup runner-up and third place were secured by Biah Attackers B and Kebulu Fighters, respectively. Meanwhile, the fourth place went to Kyubi Rugby Club. In other categories, Biah Attackers A clinched the plate champion title, followed by Cinnamon Titan as the plate runner-up, while Binaong Bison was crowned bowl champion. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
