KENINGAU: The collaboration between the District Education Office and schools here in field of sports reflects the inclusive policy currently being pursued by the State government in line with the aspirations of Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ). Minister of Youth and Sports, Datuk Ellron Angin, said he wants to see the young generation today not only physically active and competitive but also have strong humanitarian values. 'Both sports and physical education are part of the same education system, though their approaches may differ. 'Sports are based on specific skills, while physical education focuses on the physical development and health of students,' said Ellron when officiating the 2025 Keningau District Schools Sports Council (MSSD) Under-12 Rugby Championship, held at the SK Kg Biah field. In this regard, Ellron expressed his pride in seeing how sports are being used as a platform for unity and character development. 'We are not just building physical strength, but also shaping identity, enhancing mental resilience, and instilling noble values such as discipline, teamwork, mutual respect, and sportsmanship regardless of background and ability,' he said. At the same time, Ellron affirmed his belief that every child has their own potential and unique talents. He said all that is needed is opportunity, and through such tournaments, a space has been created for all students to shine, compete healthily, and learn to collaborate. 'Success will follow with dedicated effort and persistent training,' he added. He also noted that each player has their own strengths, advantages, and unique traits but most importantly, they share a strong fighting spirit. 'Today, these players stand on the same field with one goal to chase success in sports. 'But remember, winning is not everything. What matters more is the courage to try, the spirit to keep challenging oneself, and the resilience not to give up easily,' he added, motivating the crowd. In any situation on the field, on the track, or in life, he urged them never to fear falling, because those who fall and rise again are the true winners. Ellron who is also Sook Assemblyman, concluded with hopes that the success of this year's rugby championship will continue, and that more such initiatives will be implemented across districts throughout the state of Sabah. Meanwhile, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Ulu Senagang emerged as the cup champion of the 2025 Keningau District Schools Sports Council (MSSD) Under-12 Rugby Championship. The cup runner-up and third place were secured by Biah Attackers B and Kebulu Fighters, respectively. Meanwhile, the fourth place went to Kyubi Rugby Club. In other categories, Biah Attackers A clinched the plate champion title, followed by Cinnamon Titan as the plate runner-up, while Binaong Bison was crowned bowl champion. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Coachless Jinoreeka captures another title
KUALA LUMPUR: Squash player Jinoreeka Ning, who is without a coach, continues to shine. After winning the girls' Under-15 Asian Junior Championships in Gimcheon, South Korea recently, she added the Penang International Junior Open Under-17 title to her collection today. Joint fifth seed Jinoreeka, who is from Perak, stunned Hong Kong's top seed Chloe Lo 12-10, 11-7, 11-4 in the final at the Nicol David International Squash Centre. Though Jinoreeka does not have a coach in Malaysia, she follows a training programme given by Egyptian Omar Aziz. Her parents, R. Manivannan and Toh Chee Kuan have spent RM250,000 for her to train under Omar in Cairo eight times since 2023. Jinoreeka said although she is 14, she did not feel nervous playing against older opponents. "My goal is to feature in the 2027 Junior World Cup," she said. Manivannan said he hopes Jinoreeka would be able to get sponsors as she has won a total of 22 titles.

Debut delight as youth hockey team show promise with Asia Cup bronze
Podium finish: Malaysia celebrate after finishing third in Under-18 Asia Cup. PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's next generation of hockey talent made a strong statement by finishing third place at the Under-18 Asia Cup in China on Sunday (July 13). Malaysia finished on the podium in their debut outing after defeating Bangladesh 5-2 in the third-fourth placing fixture at the Dazhou National Hockey Training Centre. The newly assembled youth team struck first when Hisyammudin Abdul Rani scored a field goal six minutes in, but the scoreline was quickly evened by Bangladesh's Md Mehedi four minutes later. The action resumed in the third quarter when Rahuul Fazrien Mohd Nazrien scored a field goal in the 41st minute, but that was quickly replied by Jony Islam just seconds later. All even in the last quarter, Rahuul once again stepped up and put Malaysia ahead in the 49th minute, which was followed up by Abdul Hamzah Yahkip the next minute with another field goal. With no hope left for Bangladesh to catch up, Saiful Syahfy Mohd Baddruddin sealed the win by making it five for Malaysia in stoppage time. Head coach Sufian Mohamad said the fresh team's achievement in their maiden campaign shows the country's development of the sport is heading in the right direction. "I'm proud of what the team have achieved. Even though our target was to reach the semis, we took it upon ourselves to get the best result we could," he said. "I hope the team's performance will serve as a launching pad for these youngsters to go far in their future." "The team played well and has made the coaching staff proud. They showed the willingness to learn, discipline, and ability to analyse the game." Malaysia fell short of making the final after Pakistan beat them 4-3 in the penalty shootouts following a 3-3 draw in regulation time of the semi-final. Sufian added that the players have shown potential, and hopes they will continue in the right path and lead them to the national senior team. "This is just the start for this team, a very good start in fact. It's a positive indication for the future of Malaysian hockey. "I hope these players continue to train and one day make it to the senior team. "They have the winning mentality, and when the time comes, I'm sure we will be celebrating victories," he added.
