Russian drone attack on Kyiv injures 14, triggers multiple fires, mayor says

At least 14 people have been injured in an overnight drone attack on Kyiv that also damaged railway infrastructure, and set buildings and cars on fire throughout the city, the mayor has said, while separate explosions were reported in a city near Moscow. The attack was the latest in a series of Russian airstrikes on Kyiv that have intensified in recent weeks and included some of the deadliest assaults of the war on the city of three million people. Twelve of the injured were taken to hospital and two were treated at the scene, Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said in a post on Telegram. Damage was recorded in six of Kyiv's 10 districts on both sides of the Dnipro River, which bisects the city, and falling drone debris set a medical facility on fire in the leafy Holosiivskyi district, Klitschko said. He said two fires had broken out in Svyatoshynskyi district in the west of the city when drone debris fell on a warehouse, while debris from another drone set fire to cars in the courtyard of a 16-storey residential building. Drones also triggered two fires on a roof and in a courtyard in buildings in the neighbouring Solomanskyi district, and a residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district, he said. Witnesses reported a string of explosions and constant barrages of fire as air defence units tried to down the drones. Video on local media showed residents bedding down in subway stations in anticipation of further attacks. Ukraine's state-owned railway Ukrzaliznytsia, the country's largest carrier, said on Telegram that the attack on Kyiv damaged railway infrastructure in the city, diverting a number of passenger trains and causing delays. US President Donald Trump said that a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday resulted in no progress at all on efforts to end the war in Ukraine, while the Kremlin reiterated that Moscow would keep pushing to solve the conflict's 'root causes'. A decision by Washington earlier this week to halt some shipments of critical weapons to Ukraine prompted warnings by Kyiv that the move would weaken its ability to defend against intensifying airstrikes and battlefield advances. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Thursday that he hopes to speak with Trump on Friday about the supply of US weapons. Ukraine, meanwhile, launched a drone attack on the city of Sergiyev Posad near Moscow, injuring at least one person and with explosions reported in at least four locations, the head of the district Oksana Yerokhanova said early on Friday. 'I ask everyone to remain calm, not to approach the windows, not to photograph the work of the air defence,' Yerokhanova wrote in a post on the Telegram messaging app. Another drone attack on the southern Russian region of Rostov region killed at least one woman, Yury Slyusar, the acting governor of the region, said on Telegram early on Friday. Russia-Ukraine war live: Kyiv under drone assault after Russia vowed to retaliate for attack on bombers

Update: Date: 2025-06-06T00:29:10.000Z Title: Opening summary Content: Welcome to today's live coverage of the war in Ukraine, where the capital is under attack from Russian drones early and authorities say drone fragments have fallen in different parts of the city. Witnesses reported a series of explosions in Kyiv, with one of them reporting a large fire at a site where one drone had fallen. 'Enemy drones are approaching one after the other on approaches to the capital from different directions and in the city's airspace,' Tymur Tkachenko, head of the city's military administration, wrote on Telegram. The attacks came after Russia accused Kyiv of state terrorism over its daring drone operation striking Russian heavy bomber planes at air bases in Siberia and the far north at the weekend and said it it would respond as and when its military saw fit. Donald Trump said that during a call with Vladimir Putin on Wednesday he urged the Russian president to refrain from retaliating, but fully expected Moscow to strike back. 'It's probably not going to be pretty. I don't like it,' said Trump, who described what he called 'great hatred' between Putin and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Tkachenko said on Friday that in Kyiv drone fragments had been spotted in three districts on opposite sides of the Dnipro River that bisects the city. One drone had fallen on a building, he said, and details on damage and possible casualties were being collated. In other key developments: The IAEA's team at Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in Ukraine heard repeated rounds of gunfire that appeared to be aimed at drones reportedly attacking the site's training centre, the head of the UN's nuclear safety watchdog said on Thursday. There were no immediate reports of damage to the centre, it said. Russia launched a series of missiles and drones across Ukraine hours after Trump and Putin spoke on Wednesday. At least five people – including a one-year-old boy, his mother and grandmother – were killed when a drone struck a residential building in the northern Ukrainian city of Pryluky. German chancellor Friedrich Merz urged Trump to increase pressure on Russia to end the war. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un vowed to 'unconditionally support' Russia in the war at a meeting with top Russian security official Sergei Shoigu, Pyongyang state media reported.

Russian attacks kill elderly man and woman in Kherson, Ukraine says

KYIV, May 19 (Reuters) - A man and woman in their seventies were killed in separate Russian attacks on the southern Ukrainian region of Kherson, police and regional officials said on Monday. A 75-year-old woman was killed and two people were wounded in shelling late on Sunday of a central area of Kherson, the region's main city, local authorities and police said on the Telegram messaging app. A 76-year-old man was killed in a drone attack on Monday morning on a residential area of the Kakhovka district of Kherson on the Dnipro River, the police said. Photographs posted by the police on Telegram showed devastated buildings and vehicles after the attacks, which they said had damaged two apartment buildings, 17 private houses and a factory, among other infrastructure. Russia, which began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, did not immediately comment on the reports. It carried out its largest drone attack of the war on Sunday. U.S. President Donald Trump is set to speak to Russian President Vladimir Putin later on Monday as the White House steps up efforts to end Russia's war in Ukraine.
