What's the drama between Nmplol and Donut Operator? Controversy over Nmpol's Texas flood joke explained
(Image via @nmplol & @DonutOperator/X) The internet is on fire again, and this time, it's Twitch streamer Nmplol and YouTuber Donut Operator caught in the middle of it. What started as a 'joke' about a tragic flood quickly spiraled into a messy online beef involving slurs, blocked DMs, and fans going way too far. If you're confused about what exactly happened, keep on reading. It All Started With a Bad Joke It all began when Nmplol (real name Nick Polom) was livestreaming and made a pretty dark joke about the Texas floods. While talking to another streamer, he casually said something along the lines of: "They don't have much to live for anyway… every job's going to be AI, there's no future." The joke was clearly in poor taste, but it didn't stop there. Donut Operator Fires Back Cody "Donut Operator" Garrett, who had reportedly been on the ground helping search for victims, wasn't amused. He responded on X (formerly Twitter) with a slur-laced post aimed directly at Nmplol: "We were in the mud looking for bodies all day. Great joke, fa**ot @nmplol." This response immediately sparked a firestorm. While some supported Donut's frustration, others were shocked at his use of a homophobic slur in 2025. Nick Responds… In a Dress? Nmplol chose to respond sarcastically, posting a photo of himself in a dress and captioning it: "Joke went too far! My bad! Some hit some miss!" The post came across as dismissive to many, not exactly an apology. Donut Operator, realizing he had been blocked by Nick on X, called him a 'f**king loser' in a follow-up post. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Our one of a kind Patented Cold Water Extraction Process Superior Ginseng Undo Discord DMs and Cancelled Plans Behind the scenes, things got even messier. Screenshots from Nmplol's Discord server revealed that he had cancelled an upcoming shooting range meetup with Donut and vented about the situation: "Calling a 35-year-old man the F slur in 2025 is wild. I feel like it's high school." He also mentioned being harassed by Donut's fans, saying they were calling him slurs and urging him to hurt himself. Donut Doubles Down Donut Operator wasn't done. He posted a photo of a child's shoe taken from the flood site and tagged OTK, Nmplol's streamer group, accusing them of supporting someone who made jokes about a tragedy. 'These the kind of people you like having around?' Nmplol's Apology (Sort of) Eventually, Nick issued a public apology, stating: "Sorry guys, joke went too far. I wasn't fully aware of the situation. It's tragic. I'll be more mindful going forward." But Donut didn't buy it. He posted alleged private Discord messages from Nick that read: 'I apologize for nothing. Anyone upset is a pu**y with no friends.' Donut claimed the apology was only posted because he had publicly 'called his b**ch a** out.' Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story. Watch Episode 2 here.

Phuket airport reinforces security with K-9 patrols
PHUKET - Two police dogs have been deployed at Phuket International Airport as it has beefs up security and prepares for a surge in arrivals for the coming long weekend on the southern tourist island. 'Donut' and 'Omo', from the K-9 unit at Srinagarindra Camp of the Border Patrol Police, are on assignment to patrol the premises until July 16 to provide more safety assurance for passengers, airport authorities said on Tuesday. The two sniffer dogs began their duty on Monday with their handlers after arriving from the camp in Thung Song district of Nakhon Si Thammarat province. Government offices and most companies will have a four-day holiday from Thursday to Sunday, as Thursday is Asarnha Bucha Day, followed by Buddhist Lent Day on Friday. The airport earlier tightened security after a suspicious object was found in an abandoned motorcycle outside the terminal on June 25. The home-made explosive device was one of several found at locations throughout southern Thailand. Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the incidents. Authorities said they believed the devices were meant to cause panic as opposed to causing physical damage.

ByteDance's Dolphin OCR Sets New Benchmark in Document AI
ByteDance has unveiled 'Dolphin', an OCR model released under an MIT licence designed to revolutionise document processing by combining layout analysis and parsing in a unified workflow. This new tool is poised to enhance accuracy and adaptability across complex document types, marking a major advancement in optical character recognition. Dolphin operates by first analysing the document layout—identifying paragraphs, tables, figures and formulas—and then parsing each section in parallel, a method experts describe as 'analyze‑then‑parse'. The model architecture aligns with Donut, a document-oriented vision‑language model, but excels by integrating a two‑step pipeline that improves both structural understanding and text recognition efficiency. Since its LinkedIn announcement, Dolphin and its source code were published on GitHub and the Hugging Face Hub. Industry users, including practitioners from the Transformers community, have actively benchmarked it, noting its strong performance for structured documents containing scientific equations and dense layouts. Initial commentary suggests Dolphin matches or outperforms contemporaries like Donut and DocFormer in speed and layout robustness. ADVERTISEMENT This release underscores ByteDance's expanding role in document‑AI, under its BytePlus technology brand. BytePlus has been promoting OCR and translation capabilities via ModelArk, targeting finance, small business, logistics and automatable workflows. With OCR projected to become a US$43 billion market by 2032, growth driven by demand in banking, healthcare and supply chain sectors, Dolphin arrives at a critical juncture for industry needs. Key to Dolphin's innovation is layout‑first processing. By segmenting a document before interpreting textual content, it reduces errors particularly on documents with heterogeneous formats. As noted by Merve Noyan and others, this approach facilitates precise parsing of tables, mathematical notation, captions and images. Early adopters are testing its effectiveness on complex scientific papers and structured forms, areas where traditional OCR solutions frequently falter. ByteDance enters a crowded landscape of emerging OCR tools. Nanonets' small model supports markdown and LaTeX; MonkeyOCR from Huazhong University follows a structure‑recognition‑relation paradigm; and giants like Google, Microsoft and IBM continue to offer strong enterprise OCR services. Yet Dolphin distinguishes itself through open‑source licensing and its advanced pipeline, potentially accelerating adoption and collaborative development. Despite its promise, Dolphin's real-world strengths remain to be quantified. Benchmarks comparing its accuracy, latency and resource usage against established commercial solutions are limited. Additionally, performance under varying document quality—such as low‑resolution scans, handwriting or languages beyond English—has not been fully validated. Experts expected comparative benchmarks; however ByteDance has not yet released detailed evaluations. ByteDance's broader AI portfolio supports the strategic placement of Dolphin within an integrated multimodal stack. The firm's other recent innovations include Seed 1.5‑VL, a state‑of‑the‑art vision‑language model acclaimed for visual reasoning, GUI interaction and OCR applications, and the Doubao chatbot, enhanced with visual‑language capabilities for real‑time analysis in video calls. Together, these systems showcase ByteDance's ambition to lead in both document‑centric and broad visual‑language AI. ADVERTISEMENT By open‑sourcing Dolphin, ByteDance enables community collaboration and integration into platforms like Hugging Face, where machine learning engineers are already adapting the model into tools such as Transformers, vLLM and Docext. This contrasts with more proprietary offerings, opening pathways for wider testing, research, and adaptation in niche domains such as regulatory compliance, legal document processing or academic publishing. Adoption of Dolphin benefits organisations aiming to automate complex documentation tasks—ranging from invoice reconciliation and regulatory filings to academic publishing and insurance claims. The layout‑aware model structure enhances recognition and data extraction accuracy, while the permissive licence removes traditional barriers to deployment. Its integration into BytePlus also enables developers to tap into scalable API and cloud‑based services, suited for finance, logistics and SME segments. However, absorption of Dolphin into enterprise systems will depend on rigorous validation. Leading market players—like ABBYY, Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Azure—continue to set high standards in OCR performance, ecosystem support and regulatory compliance. ByteDance must supply detailed performance tests, language support, and enterprise‑grade features to compete effectively. Furthermore, addressing security, data privacy and accuracy in edge‑case layouts remains vital. The emergence of Dolphin reflects an accelerating trend: OCR is evolving beyond simple character reading into intelligent document understanding powered by AI and visual‑language paradigms. As the global OCR market approaches an estimated US$43 billion, technologies like Dolphin are expanding the frontier of what automated document systems can achieve.

AI Project Donut Raises $7M Pre-Seed Funding to Build Agentic Crypto Browser
Artificial intelligence (AI) project Donut has raised $7 million in pre-seed funding to build its Solana-based agentic crypto browser, a tool that helps users engage with blockchain applications. The funding round was led by Hongshan (formerly Sequoia CN), BITKRAFT, and HackVC, Donut announced on X on Thursday. Donut's AI agent-powered browser includes a native cryptocurrency wallet and interacts with decentralized exchanges (DEXs) and other decentralized networks. The browser's AI algorithms process both webpage content and its user's actions in order to autonomously execute on-chain operations. In effect, the browser is designed to help its users transact, trade and earn in real time "like [using] a terminal," according to Donut's post on X. AI agents have been hailed as a key to unlocking the potential for blockchain technology. While interacting with smart contract tools, self custody and bridging across different chains may be complex for humans, it is an environment in which AI agent can be built to thrive.

Oakwood Hills Senior Living gave out free doughnuts and coffee to its seniors and members of law enforcement Tuesday. One worker at the center says it's a great way to connect with members of the community. There were also activities, giving them a chance to have a little fun with the officers. 'We have a big presence of of veterans, which I think kind of goes hand in hand with law enforcement. We just have a lot of respect for law enforcement,' said Katie Staniec, the Oakwood Hills Senior Living sales director. Tuesday is also the start of the senior home's new initiative: Blue Tuesday. All staff and residents are encouraged to wear blue on Tuesdays to show their support for law enforcement. One loveable K9 from Altoona named 'Donut' also swung by to help celebrate.
