Colorado State Patrol uses grappler to catch stolen vehicle in Thornton

DENVER (KDVR) — The Colorado State Patrol used a grappler to help apprehend a stolen vehicle suspect early Wednesday morning in Thornton. CSP said troopers responded to the area of East 84th Avenue and Grant Street at approximately 3:47 a.m. Wednesday after an officer with the Thornton Police Department requested assistance with a stolen Ram pickup truck that was located. Speed cameras in place along Highway 119 construction zone Dashcam video provided to FOX31 shows the suspect vehicle turn onto southbound Interstate 25 from 84th Avenue after a first grapple attempt was unsuccessful, before a second attempt on the interstate is able to contact and disable the vehicle. Both the suspect vehicle and the CSP patrol vehicle crashed into the median and were disabled during the stop. The trooper sustained no injuries, according to CSP, while the suspect fled on foot before being apprehended by officers, southeast of the final stop location. CSP Sgt. Ivan Alvarado told FOX31's Kim Posey that the grappler is a useful tool. 'Even though it did cause a crash, it was a safer way to apprehend this vehicle,' he said. 'It helps us to apprehend a vehicle without having to do what's called a tactical vehicle intervention, the ones where we spin the cars around. So, it's a safer tool that we use.' Other agencies, including the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, also use grapplers. The system works best at slow speeds, Alvardo said, and without much traffic in the surrounding areas. 'Higher speeds bring a little bit more risk, but it's still a safer tool than everything else we have with us, and it's also something that we need to start using to apprehend those bad guys,' he said. Douglas County debuts new tool to stop suspects in getaway vehicles CSP currently has 28 grapplers in use around the state and they have been deployed about 120 times for a variety of crimes. The incident closed all lanes of travel for southbound I-25, but they were reopened by 5:20 a.m., according to CSP, which said the incident remains under investigation. Man arrested after body of Texas woman found in Colorado

A Texas man has been arrested after the body of a woman was found along I-25 in Colorado earlier this week. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said the body of Austin, Texas, resident Brenda Jackson was discovered along I-25 near Larkspur, Colo., on June 15. The department began an investigation into her death in coordination with the Austin Police Department. Investigators identified Austin resident Daniel Strong as a person of interest in the case and arrested him in Travis County, Texas. Strong is facing charges of tampering with a deceased human body. Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly thanked the members of the community who called in tips and submitted video, which helped in the investigation. Authorities are still looking for information on the victim's and suspect's movements leading up to the incident. They believe the vehicle used in the crime to be a dark gray Honda Odyssey with Texas handicap license plate number 1SGSC. Anyone who interacted with Jackson or Strong in recent weeks is encouraged to contact Detective Lewin at llewin@ or by phone at (303) 660-7563 or Detective Talmon at mtalmon@ or by phone at (303) 660-7185.

Fast-moving landspout southeast of Denver metro area damages 7 businesses' roofs, Franktown Fire Department says

A "fast-moving" landspout that formed southeast of the Denver metro area damaged at least seven businesses Monday afternoon. No one has been reported injured, but photos from the area show significant damage to at least some of those businesses' roofs. The Franktown Fire Department said around 3 p.m. that the landspout formed near the intersection of Highways 83 and 86. Both the fire department and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office characterized the landspout as "fast-moving," and the sheriff's office is asking people to avoid the area while crews work to assess the damage, help clean up, and keep people in the area safe. The National Weather Service in Boulder issued an alert about the weather around 2:40 p.m., saying hail was also possible. That alert was extended to the towns of Bennett and Strasburg soon after. A landspout is similar to a tornado, but forms from the ground up, instead of from the sky down to the ground. Franktown is about 35 miles southeast of Denver.
