Colorado State Patrol uses grappler to catch stolen vehicle in Thornton
CSP said troopers responded to the area of East 84th Avenue and Grant Street at approximately 3:47 a.m. Wednesday after an officer with the Thornton Police Department requested assistance with a stolen Ram pickup truck that was located.
Speed cameras in place along Highway 119 construction zone
Dashcam video provided to FOX31 shows the suspect vehicle turn onto southbound Interstate 25 from 84th Avenue after a first grapple attempt was unsuccessful, before a second attempt on the interstate is able to contact and disable the vehicle.
Both the suspect vehicle and the CSP patrol vehicle crashed into the median and were disabled during the stop. The trooper sustained no injuries, according to CSP, while the suspect fled on foot before being apprehended by officers, southeast of the final stop location.
CSP Sgt. Ivan Alvarado told FOX31's Kim Posey that the grappler is a useful tool.
'Even though it did cause a crash, it was a safer way to apprehend this vehicle,' he said. 'It helps us to apprehend a vehicle without having to do what's called a tactical vehicle intervention, the ones where we spin the cars around. So, it's a safer tool that we use.'
Other agencies, including the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, also use grapplers.
The system works best at slow speeds, Alvardo said, and without much traffic in the surrounding areas.
'Higher speeds bring a little bit more risk, but it's still a safer tool than everything else we have with us, and it's also something that we need to start using to apprehend those bad guys,' he said.

CSP currently has 28 grapplers in use around the state and they have been deployed about 120 times for a variety of crimes.
The incident closed all lanes of travel for southbound I-25, but they were reopened by 5:20 a.m., according to CSP, which said the incident remains under investigation.

Wall Street Journal booted from White House press trip to Scotland after Epstein report
Reporters from The Wall Street Journal have been removed from a pool of journalists covering Donald Trump's upcoming trip to Scotland in the wake of the newspaper's reporting on the president's alleged 50th birthday card to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The reporters' removal, first reported by Politico, also follows the president's $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the newspaper and the journalists who wrote the story, as well as right-wing media mogul Rupert Murdoch and parent companies News Corp and Dow Jones. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement shared with The Independent that neither the newspaper nor 'any other news outlet are not guaranteed special access to cover President Trump in the Oval Office, aboard Air Force One, and in his private workspaces.' 'Due to the Wall Street Journal's fake and defamatory conduct, they will not be one of the [13] outlets on board,' she said. 'Every news organization in the entire world wishes to cover President Trump, and the White House has taken significant steps to include as many voices as possible.' Dow Jones, which publishes the newspaper, declined to comment. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt says reporters for The Wall Street Journal will not be allowed to join an upcoming press pool due to what she called 'fake and defamatory conduct' from the newspaper (AFP via Getty Images) The Independent has requested comment from the White House Correspondents Association. Trump's lawsuit, filed in federal court in Miami on July 18, claims the newspaper, its parent companies, executives and journalists falsely smeared the president by accusing him of writing a sexually suggestive birthday card to Epstein in 2003. The birthday greeting is described by the newspaper as also including a birthday wish that says 'may every day be another wonderful secret.' A letter reportedly bearing Trump's name, which the WSJ report claims was reviewed by the newspaper, contains several lines of typewritten text framed by a drawing of a naked woman. His signature is a squiggly 'Donald' below her waist, mimicking pubic hair, according to the report. The defendants 'failed to attach the letter, failed to attach the alleged drawing, failed to show proof that President Trump authored or signed any such letter, and failed to explain how this purported letter was obtained,' according to Trump's lawsuit. 'The reason for those failures is because no authentic letter or drawing exists,' the complaint claims. Trump's relationship with Epstein — who was accused of sexually abusing dozens of minors before he was found dead in his jail cell in 2019 — has come under intense scrutiny in recent weeks following a Department of Justice memo that says no such 'list' of Epstein's alleged clients exists, despite demands from Trump's supporters and allies for a full accounting of Epstein's death and alleged ties to a wider child trafficking conspiracy implicating powerful figures. The White House has previously reprimanded Associated Press reporters and blocked them from covering White House events after the news agency said it would continue to refer to the Gulf of Mexico in its copy while noting that Trump had issued an order attempting to rename the body of water as the Gulf of America. In June, a 2-1 decision on a three-judge federal appellate court panel paused a lower-court ruling that had determined the White House had improperly punished the outlet over the content of its speech. The two judges who agreed to block that lower-court ruling were appointed by Trump in his first term. Leavitt pointed to that ruling in her statement Monday. The earlier ruling from Judge Trevor N. McFadden, another Trump appointee, said the First Amendment forbids the White House from trying to 'shut those doors to other journalists because of their viewpoints.'

Chiefs not limiting Rashee Rice's training camp participation despite jail sentence, potential NFL suspension
Kansas City Chiefs players are reporting to training camp Monday, including third-year wide receiver Rashee Rice, despite his jail sentence and a possible NFL suspension looming. Last week, Rice, 25, was sentenced to five years probation and 30 days of jail time by a Dallas County judge, per the Dallas County District Attorney's Office. Rice pled guilty to two third-degree felony charges related to his role in a multi-car crash that injured multiple people on a Dallas highway last year. "We're going to progress as normal with him," Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters Sunday. "He'll go in and take all the reps that he'd normally take. We always rotate that position. So depending on what happens here in the future, whoever needs to play will be able step in, and they'll know what they are doing and be in good shape to do it." While a suspension is widely expected, Reid said Sunday he didn't know when the NFL would decide on a potential punishment for Rice. Because the plea deal Rice took includes deferred probation, his case will be dismissed if he successfully completes probation. His 30 days of jail time can be served at any point of his five years on probation, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported last week. Rice was ruled to pay medical expenses totaling $115,481.91 for all the victims involved in the chain-reaction car crash he and then-SMU cornerback Teddy Knox caused by speeding during rush hour traffic on March 30, 2024. Rice was going 119 mph in a Lamborghini Urus SUV prior to first impact and made "multiple aggressive maneuvers around traffic", per the DA's office. He didn't check on the people in the cars affected by the collision and then fled on foot. Rice's lawyer, Royce West, released a statement on Rice's behalf last week in the media release from the DA's office. "Last March, I was involved in a high-speed accident in Dallas. There have been a lot of sleepless nights thinking about the damages that my actions caused, and I will continue working within my means to make sure that everyone impacted will be made whole. I urge everyone to mind the speed limit, drive safe and drive smart," Rice said in the statement. "Last and certainly not least, I am profoundly sorry for the physical damages to person and property. I fully apologize for the harm I caused to innocent drivers and their families." After catching 24 passes for 288 yards and 2 touchdowns in four games to start the 2024 season, Rice went on injured reserve in early October. Then he had season-ending LCL surgery. The former second-round pick's sophomore season was cut short, following an impressive rookie campaign that saw the SMU product reel in 79 passes for 938 yards and 7 touchdowns. Reid said Sunday that he and his staff will keep an eye on Rice's knee in training camp. Rice participated in Chiefs' voluntary OTAs and mandatory minicamp.

Man accused of killing woman inside Florida spa business, police say
A Florida man is facing a murder charge after police say they found a woman shot to death inside a spa. According to a July 17 news release from the Broward County Sheriff's Office, 54-year-old Cuiyun Fu was found dead inside a spa after authorities received calls reporting a dead person inside the business. Police said Fu had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators said they 'quickly identified' 69-year-old Chris Luchenburg as a suspect and learned that he and Fu had known each other for multiple months before her death. Police said they believe Luchenburg entered Fu's spa business on the morning of July 16 and fatally shot her. She was found a day later. According to online court records, Luchenburg faces one count of first-degree murder. Local news station NBC 6 South Florida reported a local judge had denied Luchenburg bond over the weekend. Information about Luchenburg's legal representation was not immediately available. Fernando Cervantes Jr. is a trending news reporter for USA TODAY. Reach him at and follow him on X @fern_cerv_.
