Ex-Celtics champion signs new deal with Eastern Conference team
The Boston Celtics are losing another member of their 2023-24 championship roster after declining to extend him a qualifying offer this offseason. Forward Drew Peterson, who spent the past two seasons with Boston on a two-way contract, will join the Charlotte Hornets on a two-way pact in the 2025-26 campaign, according to Shams Charania of ESPN. He'll reunite with former Celtics assistant and current Hornets head coach Charles Lee in Charlotte. Peterson spent most of his first year with the Celtics' G League affiliate, the Maine Celtics, appearing in just three games for the parent club. However, the 25-year-old saw increased NBA action last season, averaging 2.2 points and 1.6 rebounds while shooting 39.4 percent from three-point range in 7.4 minutes per game across 25 appearances. MORE: Bucks reportedly interested in former rival big man Al Horford The USC product was a featured player for Maine in 2024-25, averaging 17.4 points, 6.2 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 3.2 three-pointers and 1.4 steals in 32.5 minutes per game over 26 G League appearances. A talented three-point shooter dating back to his collegiate days, Peterson will look to impress his new organization and potentially earn a standard contract. The Hornets were riddled with injuries last season, finishing with a 19-63 record in Lee's first year as the head coach. Still, Peterson will likely spend significant time in the G League, as the club will likely prioritize minutes for its young forwards, including Kon Knueppel, Liam McNeeley, and Tidjane Salaun. Charlotte also has established options and depth in the frontcourt, though it wouldn't be surprising to see Peterson get a look if injuries arise. Celtics Send Parting Message After NBA Champion Joins New Team
Celtics Send Parting Message After NBA Champion Joins New Team originally appeared on Athlon Sports. A little over one year since winning their 18th NBA Championship, the Boston Celtics' roster is already beginning to look completely different. Earlier this offseason, Boston traded Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis to the Portland Trail Blazers and Atlanta Hawks, respectively. Furthermore, backup center Luke Kornet left in free agency to sign with the San Antonio Spurs, and veteran Al Horford is all but confirmed to leave the Celtics this summer, whether it be to sign with another team or to retire. While these were the biggest losses the Celtics have had this summer, they are not the only ones. Recently, Drew Peterson, who had been with the team since 2023, signed a two-way contract with the Charlotte Hornets. On Wednesday, the Celtics sent a simple three-word message to the former NBA Champion: "Thank you, Drew ☘️" Across his two seasons with the Celtics, the Illinois native appeared in 28 games and started one of them. In those games, he averaged 2.3 points and 1.5 rebounds in 7.5 minutes while shooting 44.7% from the field and 42.1% from beyond the arc. Peterson never got much of an opportunity in Boston, spending most of his time in the G League. Still, he looked solid when he did play, even if it was only in a small sample size. Even with next year looking like a gap year for the Celtics as they retool their roster, it was unlikely that the 25-year-old was going to carve out a big role with the team. Now that he is in Charlotte and reunited with head coach Charles Lee, Peterson might have an opportunity to have a breakout year and establish himself as a legitimate NBA contributor. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 16, 2025, where it first appeared.

Former USC men's basketball star Drew Peterson signs with Charlotte Hornets
Former USC men's basketball star Drew Peterson has a new home. On Monday night, ESPN's Shams Charania reported that Peterson has agreed to a two-way contract with the Charlotte Hornets. Peterson spent the past two seasons on a two-way deal with the Boston Celtics. In 2024, he won an NBA championship with the team. This past year, Peterson appeared in 25 games, averaging in 2.3 points and 1.5 rebounds per contest. After starting his college career at Rice, Peterson played at USC from 2020-2023. In each of his final two seasons in Cardinal and Gold, Peterson was named first-team All-Pac-12. During his USC tenure, the Trojans made it to three consecutive NCAA Tournaments, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 2021. Peterson was not selected in the 2023 NBA Draft. After a brief stint with the Miami Heat's G-League affiliate in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, he signed a two-way contract with the Celtics in December of 2023. Peterson had a lot of great moments during his time in Cardinal and Gold. USC fans will certainly be continuing to cheer him on at the next level.

Boston Celtics lose free agent forward to the Charlotte Hornets
Last season, Drew Peterson looked close to earning the 15th and final roster spot with the Boston Celtics. He impressed during preseason, notably during the two games against the Denver Nuggets in Abu Dhabi. And, he had some solid showings early in the NBA season. However, as Boston's 2024-25 campaign continued, Peterson became an afterthought and was back to developing his skillset with the Maine Celtics in the G League. Peterson played in 15 games for Maine last season. He averaged 20 points, 6.9 rebounds and 6 assists, shooting 40.4% from 3-point range and 44.2% from the field. The 6-foot-9 forward also suited up in 25 contests for the Celtics, where he shot 39.4% from the 3-point line. However, Peterson has now made the decision to move on from Boston. According to a July 15 report from ESPN's Shams Charania, Peterson has signed a two-way contract with the Charlotte Hornets. He will now team back up with Charles Lee, with whom he worked throughout the 2023-24 season when both were with the Celtics. Charlotte is in the very early stages of a roster rebuild. Peterson likely sees an opportunity to impress in the G League and potentially earn his way into Lee's rotation, with the hope of landing a full-time NBA contract. After coming close to cracking Boston's highly competitive roster last season, he is smart to bet on himself with the Hornets. Peterson has made a move that could benefit his career. Now, the challenge is proving himself to a new coaching staff. If he can stay focused, he could be fighting for a rotational role in the NBA before too long.
