Google Confirms Most Pixel Users Must Not Install This Update

Sometimes new is not best. It's one of the key differentiators that sets Pixel apart from the rest of Android — fast access to the latest betas and features before anyone else. But sometimes — even for Pixel owners — you just need to sit tight and wait. As Droid Life says, 'part of the perks of owning a Google-made phone is that you get the earliest builds of Android before anyone, allowing you to play with all that is new.' But Google's announcement this week heralded 'a significant evolution in our pre-release program. Moving forward, the Android platform will have a Canary release channel, which will replace the previous developer preview program.' Per Droid Life, 'testing beta software on your Google Pixel phone is just something we do as Pixel owners… What if you could have even earlier builds of Android? Yeah, well, you can starting today, thanks to the release of the first Android Canary build." This runs 'alongside the existing beta program,' Google explains, 'providing a more streamlined and continuous opportunity for you to try out new platform capabilities.' But it also carries a major warning for Pixel users — this almost certainly is not for you. Google warns this new Canary channel is intended only for developers and 'you should expect bugs and breaking changes. These bleeding-edge builds will not be the best choice for someone to use as their primary or only device.' As Android Police says, 'this new program is still meant for developers, and typical users shouldn't expect Canary builds to be stable enough for daily use. They're likely to contain bugs that won't (or shouldn't) be present in public beta or stable builds.' Droid Life echoes this: 'In other words, the answer is 'NO!' – you should not flash this and it won't be a good experience on the only phone you own.' And so while polished OS betas that are clearly for public use are one thing, don't stretch the point too far. If you own a Pixel you'll still be miles ahead of any other device when it comes to new features — especially Samsungs, which still await Android 16.

You can now check to see whether your Pixel 6a has a defective battery

The Pixel 9 series birthed some of the best Android phones that you can buy right now. But this type of success doesn't come overnight, with Google delivering plenty of misses with its previous phone releases. With that said, they weren't all bad, but they definitely didn't have the polish that current models have. And while most will have transitioned from those older models to something new, we're now starting to see just how durable these previous-generation phones really are. The Pixel 4a saw a surprise update that reduced battery life, and the Pixel 7a had issues with its battery, prompting the brand to replace it. And just last month, we got word that the Pixel 6a would also get a battery update as well. With that said, it was reported earlier by Droid Life that Google had removed firmware for the Pixel 6a, and now, Google has made things official, announcing its Pixel 6a Battery Performance Program, which is set to officially launch on July 8 (via Droid Life). As far as the details go, Google has determined that some Pixel 6a devices will require an update in order to "reduce the risk of potential battery overheating." Now, similar to previous actions taken by Google, this update will reduce battery capacity and charging performance, but will only affect devices that have exceeded 400 charging cycles. Again, this update will only occur if you have a device that is affected. Not all Pixel 6a phones will need this update. Of course, this is something that is quite inconvenient, and it appears that Google is offering some compensation for the matter in the form of "a repair at no cost to you, a cash payment, or a Google Store hardware discount credit." You'll need to enter your IMEI in order on the support page to see whether you qualify. If you want to get your battery replaced, and your device qualifies, you'll be able to head to a support center in these countries: United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Singapore, Japan, and India. Those in the US and India will also have the option to mail in their device to get support. As a Pixel owner, it's going to be disappointing to experience something like this, but at least Google is taking some steps in order to ensure that its past devices aren't exposing customers to any kind of serious issues. Furthermore, it also has a variety of solutions available that will allow affected users to get proper support. Of course, if you're someone that owns a different phone or tablet, and wants to be proactive in maintaining battery health, we have some tips to offer that will help you preserve the battery inside your device.

Google is likely to limit storage options with Pixel 10 series: Know what's the catch

The Google Pixel 10 series is expected to launch in August, which is now just a few weeks away. Previously, we came across a leak, revealing the expected colour variants of all Pixel 10 models. Now, a tipster has revealed the storage variants of all Pixel 10 models, which come with an unusual limitation on the storage options. Reportedly, Google will be offering 1TB storage variants for the Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold. However, the 1TB storage option may not be available for all colour variants. This year, Google will likely limit smartphone storage options based on colours. Know what's expected at Google's August launch. Also read: 5 Google Pixel AI features that will make you rethink your smartphone experience right now As last year, Google will launch four flagship smartphones that will include Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Reportedly, all four models are slated to launch in four colourways, whereas the foldable will come in two colour options. However, some of the colour options are expected to come with storage limitations. As per the DroidLife report, the Pixel 10 is expected to come in 128GB and 256GB storage options. On the other hand, the Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold could offer up to 1TB of storage. However, the 1TB storage option will depend on the colour variant this year. Here's a breakdown of Pixel 10 models with colour variants and storage options. Pixel 10 Obsidian: 128G / 256GB Obsidian: 128GB / 256GB / 512GB / 1TB Porcelain: 128GB / 256GB / 512GB Moonstone: 128GB / 256GB / 512GB Obsidian: 128GB / 256GB / 512GB / 1TB Moonstone: 256GB / 512GB / 1TB Therefore, people opting for the Pixel 10 Pro and 10 Pro XL models with the 1TB storage variant will have to go for the Obsidian colour option. Additionally, if buying the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, buyers may have to opt for the Moonstone colour variant. While this makes things confusing for buyers, we are still a month away from the official launch. Therefore, it is better to wait for the official announcement to confirm if the rumours are true.

Latest Pixel 10 series color leak adds some storage surprises

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority Pixel 9 TL;DR A new leak has added credibility to the Pixel 10 series color options revealed in a recent leak. It also reveals the storage configurations for all models and suggests Google may limit some variants to specific colors. The report also outlines possible color choices for the Pixel Watch 4 and Pixel Buds 2a. Recent leaks have caused some confusion over the color options for Google's upcoming Pixel 10 lineup, with different sources offering conflicting details. However, a new report has added weight to the most recent leak, potentially revealing the final color choices. The report also sheds light on the color variants for the Pixel Watch 4 and Pixel Buds 2a, which differ slightly from the details we saw last week. DroidLife claims to have seen distributor data for Google's upcoming devices and has corroborated the Pixel 10 series color options revealed by leaker Mystery Lupin last week. According to the publication, the base Pixel 10 will be available in Obsidian, Frost, Indigo, and Lemongrass, while the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL will come in Obsidian, Porcelain, Moonstone, and Jade. Lastly, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold will get only two colors: Moonstone and Jade. The distributor data allegedly includes details about the storage configurations as well, which aligns with the information we've seen previously. It reiterates that Google will offer the Pixel 10 with either 128GB or 256GB of storage, the Pixel 10 Pro with 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB, and both the Pixel 10 Pro XL and Pixel 10 Fold with 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB storage. Interestingly, the report suggests that Google may limit certain storage configurations for select color options. For example, the Jade variant of the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL may only come with 256GB of storage, while the Jade Pixel 10 Pro Fold may not get a 1TB variant. Additionally, the Porcelain and Moonstone Pixel 10 Pro XL may also lack a 1TB configuration, whereas its Obsidian variant may get a 128GB option. Since the previous leak highlighted no such discrepancies, we recommend taking this information with a grain of salt. As for the upcoming accessories, the report claims that the Pixel Buds 2a will come in three colors: Hazel, Iris, and Fog Light. This differs slightly from Mystery Lupin's report from last week, which included an additional Strawberry colorway. The Pixel Watch 4's sizes and color options are consistent with the previous leak, although band choices are not included. We anticipate more details will emerge in the coming weeks as Google gears up to launch its next-gen smartphones, smartwatch, and budget-friendly earbuds. The company is expected to host a launch event next month, so it won't be long before we have confirmation on the final color options and storage configurations for all devices in the lineup. Pixel 10 Pro leak: Commercial shoot reveals the device's design

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. A commercial shoot for the Pixel 10 Pro was leaked, offering early visuals of the device. The Pixel 10 Pro should be retaining a similar design to its predecessor, including the protruding camera visor and triple camera system with a temperature sensor. The leak also indicates that Google is likely planning an early summer event to launch the Pixel 10 series. Google is preparing for the Pixel 10 series lineup, and it is pretty evident that the company appears to be shooting for the commercials of its products. Thanks to a new leak, we get to see a glimpse of the shoot alongside some sneak peeks of the upcoming handset. The leak comes through a photographer, Mark Teasdale, on X (via DroidLife), where he happened to go out for a walk and spotted a commercial shoot happening with over 20 crew shooting a man with a phone — and that happens to be the Pixel 10 Pro, going by the images. The images from the so-called 'Ask more of your phone' shoot here include a storyboard of the commercial, which comprises some Pixel 10 Pro shots in a couple of angles revealing its design, and some hands-on of the device where one can see the notable protruding camera visor similar to the predecessor Pixel 9 Pro. It includes the triple camera setup next to the popular temperature sensor. The successor looks largely the same as the previous iteration — in the commercial shoot images and also matches the previously leaked Pixel 10 Pro renders. While a lot of older-generation Pixel phones have shown up before the release in several ways, like renders, someone dropping the phone in a café, or its retail box surfacing, the latest commercial shoot leak still comes as an interesting way to see the phone beforehand. Image 1 of 2 Image 2 of 2 With Google done with its annual developer conference last week and the Android Show a week before that, the next big event is the Pixel 10 series. We will likely get devices like Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and the Pixel 10 Pro Fold this time around. Phone deals: Best Buy | Walmart | Samsung | Amazon | Verizon | ATT
