Hold the mayo? Notre Dame football, Wake Forest agree to meet in Charlotte in 2027
SOUTH BEND — Monday's Notre Dame football scheduling announcement brought with it a question of great intrigue: Does a vat of mayonnaise get dumped on the winning coach of a regular-season Duke's Mayo Classic as it does in bowl season? Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame could find out in 2027 after it was announced the Irish will face Wake Forest at Charlotte's Bank of America Stadium, home of the NFL's Panthers. The neutral-site game is set for Oct. 9 that year as part of the annual ACC scheduling partnership with Notre Dame. Notre Dame is perfect in six all-time meetings with the Deacons, including a 47-7 thrashing on quarterback Sam Hartman's Senior Day in 2023. The Wake Forest graduate transfer played his first three high school seasons in the Charlotte area. The game also projects as a potential homecoming for several Charlotte-area products on the current Irish roster, including a trio of sophomores: defensive end Bryce Young, wideout Micah Gilbert and tight end Jack Larsen. 'More like Superman:' What Notre Dame football greats say about Jeremiyah Love Offensive lineman Sullivan Absher, a third-year sophomore, is from Belmont, N.C., while freshman safety JaDon Blair is from Winston-Salem, home of Wake Forest. Notre Dame's highly regarded 2026 recruiting class includes four key defensive prospects from the Tar Heel State: defensive ends Rodney Dunham (Charlotte) and Ebenezer Ewetade (Garner, N.C.); linebacker Thomas Davis Jr. (Matthews, N.C.), and safety Nick Reddish (Charlotte). The only previous visit to Charlotte for Notre Dame football came in the ACC Championship game in December of 2020, a 34-10 loss to Clemson. Notre Dame is 28-15 in current NFL stadiums, dating to 1980, including the postseason. Since 2014, the Irish lead all FBS teams with appearances in 17 different NFL stadiums, seven more than the closest program. Since 2016, Notre Dame has played 18 games in NFL stadiums, including eight postseason games. The Irish have gone 11-7 in those outings, including 7-2 with Freeman at the helm. A seven-game winning streak for Notre Dame in active NFL stadiums ended with the loss to Ohio State in the CFP national championship game in Atlanta. Notre Dame, Wake Forest to meet in the 2027 Duke's Mayo Classic in Charlotte
Notre Dame football is heading to the Queen City in what will be quite a zesty matchup. The Fighting Irish and Wake Forest agreed to play in the Duke's Mayo Classic at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. on Saturday, October 9, 2027. The game is part of ND's scheduling agreement with the ACC and will be played as a neutral-site matchup. The Irish are 6-0 against the Demon Deacons, winning the last meeting 47-7 in 2023 at Notre Dame Stadium. The two programs have never played a neutral-site game against one another. The game against Wake will mark the second time the Irish have played at Bank of America Stadium, the first being the 2020 ACC title game when they competed as a member of the conference. A big question surrounding this game will be if the Mayo shower will happen to the winning coach. We all hope that Marcus Freeman isn't allergic. Wake Forest takes on Notre Dame in the 2027 Duke's Mayo Classic in Charlotte
Notre Dame will take on Wake Forest in the 2027 Duke's Mayo Classic at Bank of America Stadium in Uptown. Why it matters: It will be one of two Duke's Mayo Classic games at the stadium in 2027 — college football matchups that draw thousands of people to Uptown and pump millions into the local tourism economy. As one of the country's most storied football programs, Notre Dame draws national TV audiences and has a huge fan base known for traveling to games. Wake Forest, about an hour and a half from Charlotte, is a smaller but respected program with a devoted, national fan base. Between the lines: This will be the second time Charlotte has hosted two Duke's Mayo Classic games in a season. However, it won't be a double-header like it was in 2021 when Appalachian State played East Carolina and Georgia played Clemson within a matter of days in Uptown, Charlotte Sports Foundation CEO Will Pitts tells Axios (CSF oversees the Duke's Mayo Classic and several other sporting events in Charlotte). Instead, the games will be spread out. North Carolina A&T will take on North Carolina Central on Aug. 28, 2027, in the Duke's Mayo Classic. The historic rivalry is known as the Aggie-Eagle Classic. Notre Dame and Wake Forest will meet in Charlotte further into the season. The date and time are TBD. Tickets will go on sale closer to the game, but fans can register for presale details at Flashback: Notre Dame and Wake Forest had been scheduled to play each other in September 2020 at Bank of America Stadium, but the game was rescheduled because of COVID, then ultimately canceled. Notre Dame later lost to Clemson that year in the ACC Championship in Charlotte. What they're saying: "Welcoming programs like Wake Forest and Notre Dame not only energizes our local economy but also deepens the city's reputation as a premier destination for major sporting events," Pitts said in a statement.

How to get tickets to see Bill Belichick and UNC take on the Charlotte 49ers in Charlotte
The Charlotte 49ers will release single-game tickets next week for their most anticipated opponent of the season — the North Carolina Tar Heels. Why it matters: Demand to see legendary coach Bill Belichick in his first season at the helm for the Tar Heels is high both in the Triangle and on the road. Single-game and season tickets for games in Chapel Hill have already sold out. State of play: The 49ers host the Tar Heels on Sept. 6 at 7pm. It will be Belichick's first away game as North Carolina's head coach. By the numbers: Roughly 2,400 additional seats will be placed in the east concourse above the 49ers' student section to meet the ticket demand that game, bringing Jerry Richardson Stadium's seated capacity to around 17,700. There will also be space for standing room only tickets, per the program. How it works: Starting July 29, Charlotte 49ers season ticket holders and 49er Club members will be able to purchase single-game tickets to this game. UNC Charlotte alumni will be able to purchase tickets on July 30. Tickets go on sale to the public on Aug. 5, if there are tickets remaining. Tickets will be "subject to dynamic pricing," per a university email to past ticket buyers. It is unclear what the price range for tickets will be. Charlotte Athletics did not immediately respond to a request for comment. By comparison, tickets for Charlotte's other home games range from $24-$179. Zoom out: The North Carolina game is part of the 49ers' three-game flex plan. Fans can currently purchase flex plan tickets. Between the lines: It's a significant moment for both programs — with Belichick at the helm in Chapel Hill and Tim Albin's first season as the 49ers' head coach. Plus, Charlotte has sold out of season tickets for the first time, and will break ground on a $70 million stadium expansion on Aug. 27. The first phase of expansion will bring stadium capacity to 18,100 people. Charlotte will continue to play its games at Jerry Richardson Stadium during construction. What we're watching: This will be the second time the 49ers and the Tar Heels have met. The Tar Heels won 38-20 last year in Chapel Hill. The teams were scheduled to play in 2020, but that game was canceled due to COVID-19. What's next: The 49ers open their season against Appalachian State in the 2025 Duke's Mayo Classic at Bank of America Stadium on Aug. 29 at 7pm. Tickets start at $70.

Charlotte 49ers sell out of football season tickets for the first time
Charlotte 49ers football season tickets have sold out, the program recently announced. Why it matters: Selling out season tickets is a first for the program and an important milestone for a team that's slated to soon break ground on a $70 million stadium expansion. By the numbers: The 49ers have surpassed 6,000 season tickets, according to a program spokesperson. Zoom in: They're scheduled to play six home games this season, starting with the North Carolina Tar Heels on Sept. 6 at 7pm. This will be Bill Belichick's first away game as the Tar Heels' head coach. Roughly 2,400 additional seats will be placed in the east concourse above the 49ers' student section to meet the ticket demand that game, bringing Jerry Richardson Stadium's seated capacity to around 17,700. There will also be space for standing room only tickets, per the program. Flashback: The 49ers' record for a home game is 19,151 vs. Appalachian State in 2019. They sold out four of their six home games last season. What we're watching: This will be the 49ers' first season under head coach Tim Albin, and the 49ers are looking to return to a bowl game for the first time since 2019. They'll play at Bank of America Stadium for the first time on Aug. 29 when they take on Appalachian State in the Duke's Mayo Classic. What's next: Single-game tickets go on sale to the general public on July 8. Tickets for a three-game flex plan are on sale and include the North Carolina game. Subject to availability, single-game tickets for the North Carolina game will become available closer to the game.
