DMK will secure majority, there will be no coalition government: Vaiko
'The MDMK will work hard to ensure victory for the DMK and its alliance partners,' he said, interacting with journalists in Chennai. Asked about the future of the MDMK, he said the party had decided to support the DMK to prevent Hindutva forces from gaining a foothold in Tamil Nadu.
Mr. Vaiko clarified that his party had not made any demand for seeking allocation of seats in two-digits, but had only expressed its desire 'to win eight seats to gain recognition from the Election Commission.'
Recalling party MP Durai Vaiko's earlier response to the media regarding the number of seats the party was planning to contest, he said the former had only said the party might seek 12 seats since it needed to win eight. 'Even then, he clearly said a final decision would be taken by party high command,' Mr. Vaiko added.
Mr. Durai Vaiko, who was also present during the media interaction, said reporters in Tiruchi had asked for his reaction to the demand for more seats by the DMK's allies. 'All I said was that every party has the right to expect more from the DMK. I also mentioned that MDMK office-bearers are keen on securing recognition, which requires us to win eight seats. So, we may need to contest in 12 seats. But the media portrayed it as though the MDMK had formally demanded 12 seats,' he clarified.
When asked whether he would demand a reduction in the number of Tasmac-run liquor shops or advocate for their closure, Mr. Vaiko said prohibition was one of the MDMK's key demands. 'I travelled 1,600 km to highlight this issue. We shut down the liquor shop in my village and smashed liquor bottles. When the matter reached the court, the judges in the High Court and Supreme Court refused to intervene, saying it was the will of the village's people.'
Asked if he would lead similar protests elsewhere, Mr. Vaiko said he would participate if a similar situation arose and people invited him to join protests against liquor shops. He also announced that the MDMK would celebrate the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai by organising a political conference in Tiruchi.

Delhi Speaker sets up House panels for welfare of senior citizens
New Delhi: Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta on Friday announced the formation of Special Committees for the welfare of senior citizens and five other House panels, taking the number of such MLA groups to 35, an official said. The new panels announced by Gupta include those focused on critical areas such as the welfare of senior citizens, peace and harmony, and the welfare of transgenders and persons with disabilities, among others. These Special Committees have been constituted to strengthen institutional mechanisms and ensure focused attention on the concerns of marginalised and underrepresented communities, said an official of the Assembly Secretariat. The formation of 35 House Committees has taken place in four phases — 11 committees were formed in the first phase, seven in the second, 11 in the third, and the latest six in the fourth phase. Gupta stated that with the addition of these new Committees, the Assembly reinforces its commitment to responsive and equitable legislation. The six Special Committees announced for the financial year 2025-26 include the Special Committee on Salary and Other Allowances of Members of Delhi Legislative Assembly, headed by Abhay Kumar Verma. Its members include Gajender Singh Yadav, Poonam Sharma, Raj Kumar Chauhan, Sanjeev Jha, Surya Prakash Khatri, Tarvinder Singh Marwah, Vishesh Ravi, and Chaudhary Zubair Ahmad. Sanjay Goyal will head the Special House Committee on Violation of Protocol Norms and Contemptuous Behaviour by Government Officers with MLAs. Its members include Anil Goyal, Anil Jha, Anil Kumar Sharma, Jarnail Singh, Karnail Singh, Kulwant Rana, Om Prakash Sharma, and Surya Prakash Khatri. The Special Committee on the Municipal Corporation of Delhi will have Ravinder Singh Negi as its chairperson. State denies plan to split PMC, promises more funds for merged villages
The state government has clarified that it has no plans to bifurcate the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and form a separate civic body for the city's eastern parts. Instead, it assured increased funding and better services for the merged villages. Industries minister Uday Samant said, 'There is no proposal to divide the existing PMC. The civic body is already working to address the needs of the merged villages and is prepared to allocate additional funds if required.' (REPRESENTATIVE PHOTO) The issue was raised in the Assembly on Thursday by BJP leader and MLC Yogesh Tilekar, who demanded the creation of a new municipal corporation for the eastern region, citing neglect of the merged areas under the current PMC structure. Tilekar said, 'PMC is the largest municipal corporation in India and Asia in terms of geographical area. While it collects taxes from the merged villages, it has failed to provide adequate civic amenities. Citizens from these areas feel that no political party has been able to deliver justice. There's a clear inequality in the distribution of resources.' Responding to the query, Industries minister Uday Samant said, 'There is no proposal to divide the existing PMC. The civic body is already working to address the needs of the merged villages and is prepared to allocate additional funds if required.' Samant added that of the 34 villages originally merged with the PMC, two - Uruli Kanchan and Phursungi - have since been excluded. 'For the remaining 32 villages, PMC has allocated ₹250 crore for water supply, ₹146 crore for drainage works, and ₹107 crore for roads. More funds will be given if necessary,' he said. He also said that since the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is preparing the Development Plan (DP) for the merged areas, the state government will take appropriate decisions based on its recommendations.

Pune court rejects plea to compel Rahul Gandhi to submit book in Savarkar defamation case
The special member of Parliament – member of legislative assembly (MP-MLA) court on Thursday rejected an application seeking to compel Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to submit a copy of the book he was referring to during a speech in London on March 2, 2023, in which he allegedly made defamatory remarks about Hindutva icon, Veer Savarkar. The complaint alleged that Rahul Gandhi had made false and defamatory statements during his 2023 London speech, including a claim that Savarkar had written about enjoying assaulting a Muslim man in his book. (HT FILE) 'No person accused of any offence shall be compelled to be a witness against himself. The burden of proof lies entirely on the complainant. Hence, the application filed by the complainant is liable to be rejected and is accordingly rejected,' judicial magistrate Amol Shinde said in the order pronounced in open court on July 3. Advocate Sangram Kolhatkar, appearing for Satyaki Savarkar – Veer Savarkar's grand-nephew who filed the defamation complaint under section 500 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) last year – had argued that Gandhi's lawyer was deliberately delaying proceedings which are currently at the stage of recording the plea. Advocate Kolhatkar maintained that the book in question is essential to ensuring a fair trial. In response, Gandhi's lawyer, advocate Milind Pawar, strongly opposed the plea, stating that the trial had not yet commenced and therefore Gandhi could not be compelled to disclose any part of his defence or supporting documents. Advocate Pawar argued that the burden of proof lies solely on the complainant and compelling the accused to produce material at this stage would violate the accused's constitutional protection under Article 20(3) which safeguards against self-incrimination. Advocate Pawar submitted, 'The complainant is required to prove his case beyond reasonable doubt. The accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Forcing the defence to prematurely disclose material is not permitted under criminal law and violates constitutional guarantees.' Advocate Pawar further argued, 'There is no legal obligation on the defence to provide any document or material to the complainant. Such a direction would seriously prejudice the accused's right to a fair trial and his ability to defend himself effectively.' After hearing the arguments from both sides, the court noted that the case is still at the stage of recording the accused's plea, and that it arises from a private complaint. The court held that the burden of proving the allegations lies entirely on the complainant. The court observed: 'Gandhi cannot be compelled to disclose or submit any part of his defence before the trial formally begins. He is entitled to present relevant documents at the defence stage as per the law. Forcing the accused to produce material at this preliminary stage would infringe upon his constitutional protection under Article 20(3) of the Constitution of India, which protects against compelled self-incrimination.' The complaint alleged that Rahul Gandhi had made false and defamatory statements during his 2023 London speech, including a claim that Savarkar had written about enjoying assaulting a Muslim man in his book. Gandhi had earlier been exempted from appearing before the MP-MLA court presided over by magistrate Shinde and was granted bail on a bond of ₹25,000.
