Louis van Gaal: Ex-Manchester United and Netherlands coach ‘no longer bothered by cancer'

Former head coach of Manchester United and Netherlands head coach Louis van Gaal has said he is 'no longer bothered by cancer'. Van Gaal, 73, announced he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and was receiving treatment in April 2022, eight months before he led the Dutch national team to the World Cup quarter-finals. Advertisement The penalty shootout loss to Argentina brought an end to his third term as Netherlands coach and he has not returned to management since. 'Two years ago, I had a few operations,' Van Gaal told Dutch talk show Humberto, in quotes cited by Reuters. 'It was all bad then. But it all worked out in the end. I have check-ups every few months, and that's going well. I'm getting fitter and fitter.' In April 2022, Van Gaal said he had undergone '25 radiation treatments' and that they had been successful. He said he did not tell his Netherlands players at the time about the diagnosis in case it 'influenced their performances,' adding: 'In each period during my time as manager of the national team I had to leave in the night to go to the hospital without the players finding it out until now.' Van Gaal's coaching career began as assistant manager of Dutch side AZ in 1986. He spent six years as head coach of Ajax between 1991 and 1997, where he won three Eredivisie titles and the Champions League in 1995. He then spent three years in charge of Barcelona, winning two La Liga titles. The Dutchman had two spells as head coach of the Netherlands either side of two years as manager of Bayern Munich, whom he led to a Bundesliga title in 2009-10. Van Gaal spent two years at Old Trafford from 2014-16, leading the club to the FA Cup title in his final match. His most recent managerial position was with Netherlands again until the 2022 World Cup. Since October 2023 he has acted in an advisory role at Ajax. ()

Feyenoord confirm Quilindschy Hartman departure to Burnley

Feyenoord have confirmed that Quilindschy Hartman will be joining Burnley this summer. The 23-year-old released a statement via the Feyenoord website, having been with the club since he was nine years old. Hartman said 'Playing for Feyenoord, that's what I wanted as a little boy and I'm proud that I was able to wear this shirt so early, up to the first team and prizes'. Hartman then went on to talk about his desire to play in the Premier League and the chance to move to Burnley means he is making another dream come true. The 23-year-old left-back, who has been capped at senior level by the Dutch national team, only made 12 appearances for the side last season, creating one assist. The fee agreed between the two sides is reported to have been around €12m. During his time with Feyenoord, Hartman won both the Eredivisie title and the KNVB cup. He leaves Feyenoord and Dutch football having made 83 appearances for the senior side, scoring two goals and providing 12 assists. Antoni Milambo may well follow him to the Premier League by joining Brentford in the near future. GBeNeFN | Ben Jackson

Depay kept ‘hungry' after equalling van Persie's scoring record

(EPA Images pic) GRONINGEN : Memphis Depay was denied the chance to complete a hattrick today, and take sole possession of the Dutch national team's all-time scoring record in the process, as coach Ronald Koeman said he wanted to keep him hungry for goals. Forward Depay scored twice inside the opening 16 minutes of the Netherlands' 8-0 win over Malta in a World Cup qualifier to equal Robin van Persie's record of 50. Both players have 50 goals in 102 international appearances. 'I equalled van Persie, I am happy with that,' said Depay, who was taken off in the 72nd minute with the Dutch 4-0 up. 'But this is just an interim total. Of course I am also going for 51, 52 and also 53. If I had played longer, I might have scored one more tonight,' he told reporters. 'I didn't say anything about the fact that the coach took me off early. I was already happy that I could do what I've been doing for years… scoring.' Depay scored his first international goal against Australia at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil but it has not always been smooth sailing over the years with the national team. 'We have had some turbulence over the years,' he said. 'There have been many coaches and many players have come and gone. The times have shaped me and made me realise what I want. 'Ultimately, it's important that we're at the World Cup and that we go far.' Koeman has consistently backed Depay over his two spells in charge of the Dutch, even when he struggled with his club form. 'I've always thought Memphis is a great player. I think he deserves a great compliment. He's had a year full of injuries, but he's fit and hungry now,' said Koeman. 'It's great that he didn't score the third, because then he stays hungry,' he quipped on Dutch television.
