He said in the incident at about 9pm, the 51-year-old victim died at the scene due to severe bodily injuries. He has two previous records under Section 377D of the Penal Code for committing gross indecency in a public place in 2003 and 2024. "Based on early investigations, the victim is said to have committed an act of gross indecency at 7.26 pm before he was chased and assaulted by several individuals. "The victim tried to escape for about 200 metres, including a desperate leap into the river, before being caught by the public and beaten again," he said after officiating at the Melaka Schools Sports Council Athletics Championships at the Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) in Durian Tunggal here yesterday. In a separate case, Dzulkhairi said a motorcyclist in his 30s was remanded for three days from today for beating a man in his 20s in a fight near Bulatan Kancil in the Stadthuys compound at Banda Hilir yesterday. He said the incident allegedly occurred when the suspect and 17 of his biker friends were fined by the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) enforcement officers for violating the Vehicle Free Zone (ZBK) in the area with their vehicles. He said the MBMB enforcement officers had asked the group of motorcyclists to leave, but they were ignored before they were issued summonses for ignoring council orders. "The group led by the suspect then tore up the summonses and a confrontation broke out between them and another group of bikers. "The victim, who was struck with a helmet and a wheel lock, was later rushed to the Melaka Hospital with minor injuries," he said. Dzulkhairi said all 23 individuals involved were arrested between 9.30 pm and 1 am on Sunday, but 22 of them were released on police bail while the suspect was remanded for three days. ALOR GAJAH: A 51-year-old man was assaulted to death last night by members of the public after he had allegedly committed sexual harassment by exposing his private parts in public. The man, who is married, was found dead in front of a kindergarten in Jasin Bestari, Jasin, near here, in the 7.26pm incident. Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said the police received a report on the incident at around 9pm. He added preliminary investigations showed that the incident began when the man was seen exposing his private parts to the public at the parking area of a supermarket. Members of the public, who noticed the man's behaviour, gave chase. "The man was then chased by the crowd and fled towards Jasin Bestari. "He was caught after a scuffle. Initially, two men assaulted him before he managed to escape into a bushy area and jumped into a river to cross it," he told reporters after launching the 2025 Melaka State Sports Council Athletics Championship at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) Stadium. Dzulkhairi said that after crossing the river, the man was caught and beaten by several other men who heard cries from the public calling for help to detain him. He said the victim, who sustained injuries, was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. His body was taken to the Jasin Hospital Forensics Unit for a post-mortem. Following the incident, police arrested seven people, including a Pakistani national, aged between 15 and their 50s, to assist in investigations. "All seven have been remanded for seven days starting today, and the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. "We urge anyone with information to come forward and assist the investigation by contacting Investigating Officer Assistant Superintendent Mohamad Ehsan Abu Bakar at 016-520 9501," he said, while also advising the public not to take the law into their own hands. In a related development, Dzulkhairi said investigations showed that the deceased had two prior convictions for acts of gross indecency under Section 377D of the Penal Code in 2023 and 2024.
