5 Revealing Analyst Questions From Electronic Arts's Q1 Earnings Call
Electronic Arts delivered first quarter results that exceeded Wall Street's expectations, driven by a rebound in flagship sports franchises and a successful new game launch. Management pointed to renewed engagement in the EA SPORTS FC series following major gameplay updates, as well as strong momentum in American football titles and double-digit growth in The Sims. CEO Andrew Wilson credited the company's rapid response to community feedback and targeted content drops for restoring player engagement, especially after a temporary slowdown in FC. The launch of new intellectual property, Split Fiction, also outperformed internal expectations, reflecting the strength of EA's diversified portfolio. Is now the time to buy EA? Find out in our full research report (it's free). Revenue: $1.9 billion vs analyst estimates of $1.76 billion (6.5% year-on-year growth, 7.6% beat) EPS (GAAP): $0.98 vs analyst estimates of $0.91 (8.2% beat) Revenue Guidance for Q2 CY2025 is $1.6 billion at the midpoint, above analyst estimates of $1.45 billion EPS (GAAP) guidance for the upcoming financial year 2026 is $3.44 at the midpoint, missing analyst estimates by 23.4% Operating Margin: 20.8%, up from 13.2% in the same quarter last year Market Capitalization: $39.63 billion While we enjoy listening to the management's commentary, our favorite part of earnings calls are the analyst questions. Those are unscripted and can often highlight topics that management teams would rather avoid or topics where the answer is complicated. Here is what has caught our attention. Matthew Cost (Morgan Stanley) asked about the drivers of the EA SPORTS FC rebound. CEO Andrew Wilson explained that a combination of personalized marketing and a significant gameplay update restored player engagement among key cohorts. Eric Sheridan (Goldman Sachs) questioned Battlefield's development and go-to-market investments. Wilson emphasized deeper community collaboration through Battlefield Labs, while CFO Stuart Canfield clarified that increased marketing costs were the main driver of incremental expenses. Doug Creutz (TD Cowen) inquired about American football's growth outlook. Wilson pointed to broader fandom for both NFL and college football, while Canfield signaled balanced guidance to account for tough year-over-year comparisons. Chris Schoell (UBS) asked about macroeconomic risks and pricing power. Wilson highlighted the resilience of major franchises during downturns and described pricing as focused on quality and value, with no immediate changes planned. Eric Handler (ROTH Capital Partners) sought insight into World Cup monetization. Wilson stated that such global events consistently drive player acquisition and engagement, especially in North America, benefiting the EA SPORTS FC franchise. Looking forward, our analysts will be monitoring (1) the player reception and engagement levels for new releases like Battlefield and Skate, (2) ongoing progress in mobile expansion and international football market penetration, and (3) the effectiveness of live service content and real-world sports event tie-ins. The trajectory of Apex Legends and the impact of resource realignment will also be important to track. Electronic Arts currently trades at $157.40, up from $154.55 just before the earnings. SA's rising stars embarked on dream football journey in Spain

Photo: Supplied Image: Next Gen Some of South Africa's most promising young footballers recently had the opportunity of a lifetime, travelling to Spain to take part in LaLiga's celebrated Next Gen competition—an initiative designed to unearth and nurture global football talent. The experience was far more than just a football tour. It was a journey of growth and discovery, offering the youngsters a chance to showcase their skills while learning from some of the best youth coaches in the world. Eight players from South Africa were selected after a series of qualifying rounds held in Rustenburg three months ago. They joined a group of young talents from 11 other nations as part of a global gathering that blended football training with cultural exploration. This initiative forms part of the broader EA SPORTS FC FUTURES programme — a joint project by La Liga and EA SPORTS aimed at developing youth through football, education, and immersive experiences. Final selections were made through LaLiga's international academies and local partners, with players chosen not only for their technical ability, but also for their character and willingness to learn. Cities such as Rustenburg, Guatemala City, Dubai, New York, and Ho Chi Minh City served as key scouting locations, with eight players (four boys and four girls) chosen from each region. In Madrid, the youngsters participated in top-level training sessions, played friendly matches against youth teams from LaLiga EA SPORTS clubs, and visited iconic football venues. It was an experience designed to broaden horizons and give each player a taste of life within the LaLiga football culture. For 15-year-old Kgatliso Raseloma, a Grade 9 learner at HF Tlou High School, the trip was a life-changing moment. 'I was happy and shocked at the same time when I heard I'd be travelling to Madrid,' Raseloma told Independent Newspapers. A passionate Orlando Pirates fan who looks up to Jude Bellingham and Relebohile Mofokeng, Raseloma said the lessons she took from the trip went beyond the pitch. 'My biggest learning from the coaches in Madrid was that we must not play with emotions. We must attack when we have the ball, and defend as soon as we lose it,' she explained. Liverpool's Salah named Premier League player of the season, Gravenberch best youngster
LONDON: Mohamed Salah was named the Premier League player of the season on Saturday after a stellar individual campaign as Liverpool cruised to their second Premier League title while his team mate Ryan Gravenberch was named the young player of the season. Salah scored 28 goals and provided 18 assists to guide the Anfield club to the title, with Arne Slot's side winning it with four games to spare. Having also earned the award in 2017-18, Salah became only the fifth player to win it twice after Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nemanja Vidic and Kevin De Bruyne. It had to be him... Mohamed Salah is your @EASPORTSFC Player of the Season @LFC | @MoSalah — Premier League (@premierleague) May 24, 2025 The 32-year-old Egyptian is on course to win another Golden Boot for most goals in a season and is five strikes ahead of Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak going into the final day of the season on Sunday. No player before has had 46 goal involvements in a 38-game season and Salah could even break the record of 47 held by Alan Shearer and Andrew Cole, who achieved the feat in a 42-game campaign, when Liverpool host Crystal Palace at Anfield. With six more assists than any other player, Salah can become the first footballer to win the Golden Boot, Golden Playmaker and player of the season awards. Salah also won the Football Writers' Association men's player of the year for the third time earlier this month. Gravenberch became one of the first names on the team sheet under Slot, who deployed the Dutchman as a deep-lying midfielder, and the 23-year-old has become a crucial part of Liverpool's spine, making 36 appearances this season. His versatility to shield Liverpool's back line has come to the fore this season while his ability to quickly initiate attacks, cutting out passing lanes and winning back possession, has made him indispensable. No midfielder has made more interceptions this season than Gravenberch (59). Gravenberch was also nominated for the Player of the Season award along with Virgil Van Dijk — the three Liverpool players who have clocked the most minutes in the team in the Premier League this season. He is also the second Liverpool player to win the youngsters' award after Trent Alexander-Arnold won it in 2019-20, the season it was introduced.
