Some of South Africa's most promising young footballers recently had the opportunity of a lifetime, travelling to Spain to take part in LaLiga's celebrated Next Gen competition—an initiative designed to unearth and nurture global football talent.
The experience was far more than just a football tour. It was a journey of growth and discovery, offering the youngsters a chance to showcase their skills while learning from some of the best youth coaches in the world.
Eight players from South Africa were selected after a series of qualifying rounds held in Rustenburg three months ago. They joined a group of young talents from 11 other nations as part of a global gathering that blended football training with cultural exploration.
This initiative forms part of the broader EA SPORTS FC FUTURES programme — a joint project by La Liga and EA SPORTS aimed at developing youth through football, education, and immersive experiences.
Final selections were made through LaLiga's international academies and local partners, with players chosen not only for their technical ability, but also for their character and willingness to learn.
Cities such as Rustenburg, Guatemala City, Dubai, New York, and Ho Chi Minh City served as key scouting locations, with eight players (four boys and four girls) chosen from each region.
In Madrid, the youngsters participated in top-level training sessions, played friendly matches against youth teams from LaLiga EA SPORTS clubs, and visited iconic football venues. It was an experience designed to broaden horizons and give each player a taste of life within the LaLiga football culture.
For 15-year-old Kgatliso Raseloma, a Grade 9 learner at HF Tlou High School, the trip was a life-changing moment.
'I was happy and shocked at the same time when I heard I'd be travelling to Madrid,' Raseloma told Independent Newspapers.
A passionate Orlando Pirates fan who looks up to Jude Bellingham and Relebohile Mofokeng, Raseloma said the lessons she took from the trip went beyond the pitch.
'My biggest learning from the coaches in Madrid was that we must not play with emotions. We must attack when we have the ball, and defend as soon as we lose it,' she explained.

Monaco close in on Fati loan signing from Barca
Barcelona forward Ansu Fati is expected to join French club Monaco on loan with an option to buy, sources close to the deal said Friday. The 22-year-old Spanish international passed his medical on Friday as Monaco and Barcelona agreed to a season-long loan deal with an 11-million-euro fee ($12.9 million) to make the move permanent. According to the same source, the contract will not be made official until July 1. Fati burst onto the scene at Barcelona aged 17, but has since failed to live up to initial high expectations. He made 11 appearances in all competitions for the La Liga champions last term, without finding the net. Fati spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Premier League club Brighton, where he scored four goals in 27 outings. With his expected arrival, Fati should become Monaco's third signing of the summer. Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is slated to sign for the Ligue 1 side, following on from England international Eric Dier. Pogba was also undergoing a medical with the principality side on Friday. The 32-year-old 2018 World Cup winner is seeking a club after having his contract terminated by Juventus in March while serving an 18-month suspension for doping. The trio should be officially announced to the press on July 3.

Bellingham confirms shoulder surgery after Club World Cup
USA - Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham confirmed Sunday he will undergo surgery on a long-term shoulder issue after the Club World Cup ends. The England international has been struggling with discomfort after dislocating it in a La Liga match in November 2023, and playing with a brace under his shirt since then. With Madrid keen on securing Club World Cup victory, they scheduled the operation for after the final, with Bellingham potentially missing the start of the La Liga season as he recovers. "I've got the point where... I'm fed up with the brace, and having to tug on it and having (other) players tug on it, and it rearranging all the time," Bellingham told DAZN after Real Madrid beat Pachuca 3-1 in Charlotte. "I've got a surgery scheduled for after the tournament, I think we scheduled it a few days after the final obviously, so I'll go and do the surgery and get it fixed. "I'm really happy about that, it's been a long time coming. I think I've come to the end of my patience with the brace. "The physio here and the doctor here have been unbelievable helping me to be fine playing game in game out, (but) I'm at that point now where I'm ready to have a free shoulder and free body in terms of the brace." Recovery from the surgery could take up to 12 weeks according to reports, so as well as Madrid's first league games, he may also miss England World Cup qualifiers in September against Andorra and Serbia. Bellingham found the net in the win over Madrid's Mexican opponents, a day after his younger brother Jobe Bellingham struck for Borussia Dortmund. The Madrid midfielder said he had been thinking about getting even ahead of the Pachuca game, which was new coach Xabi Alonso's first victory at the helm of Los Blancos. "Everyone's been caning me yesterday, saying he's better than me. I had to do something today," he added.
