Charity cup raises £5000 for mental health in memory of 18-year-old Alex Lindsay

Set up by Alex's family after the teen suddenly and unexpectedly took his own life, Adored aims to keep his memory alive while helping young men who are struggling with their mental health. The sun shone as family and friends gathered for the annual Alex Lindsay Cup and raised over £5000 in memory of the popular East Kilbride teen. Marking seven years since the tragic passing of 18-year-old Alexander Iain Bonomy-Lindsay, the tournament kicked off on June 29 at the Enviro-Clean Stadium at Kirktonholme pitches - home to EKYM and EKYC. ‌ Sixteen teams turned out for the charity match raising more than £5329 for the family's dedicated mental health charity set up in Alex's name, Adored. ‌ Download the Lanarkshire Live app today The standard of football on display was the best the tournament has seen in its seven-year history with 'The Other Team' winning the trophy beating the EK Rolls-Royce 'The Rollies' 1-0. Alex's mum Jill said: "It was a fabulous day compounded by the excellent weather, making the event a great family day. "Sixteen teams took part and it was great to see the tournament evolving with both younger and women's teams taking part. "The after party continued in the clubhouse where players and supporters were entertained with live music from Ross Martin and duo Pat and Andy. Raffle prizes were drawn and everyone enjoyed a well earned drink and buffet. ‌ "The day has drawn a whopping £5329 with some donations still incoming. This money will be donated to Adored SCIO mental health charity which was set up in Alex's name after his passing in 2018." Set up by Alex's family after the teen suddenly and unexpectedly took his own life, Adored aims to keep his memory alive while helping young men who are struggling with their mental health. ‌ Inspired by his favourite song, I Wanna be Adored, by The Stone Roses, the cause was established with a focus on mental health and saving young lives. Now an annual celebration of Alex's life, the tournament has raised tens of thousands of pounds for mental health charities including Adored and Beautiful Inside and Out. ‌ The charity provides individual and group support for mental health in conjunction with No Limits Coaching and this year has provided support in Calderglen High, St Andrew's and St Bride's High and Duncanrig Secondary. Adored now plans to extend the support across South Lanarkshire schools incorporating events in other learning communities. Jill added: "Thanks goes to those at Enviro-Clean grounds for providing the venue free of charge, and for their kind donation, and to all those who helped on the day with set up and organisation. ‌ "Thanks to Mr Bell from Calderglen High School who hasn't missed a tournament and who helped by refereeing this year. And as always thanks to Jack Smith (Alex's friend) whose dedication to keeping the tournament going each year is second to none." Remembering her beloved boy, Jill added: "The day as always evokes many emotions , but for me the overriding sense of pride was immense. ‌ "Alex was a larger than life character and it brings myself and the family much comfort to see that, despite his absence, his life is not forgotten and can hopefully bring some help to those suffering from mental health difficulties." Thanks go to local businesses who kindly donated prizes for the raffles, including: Ricos, The Detailing Company, Funktional Fitness, Soul Suites, Fresh Barbers, 1127, Beauty by Nic, Connelly Coaching, A1 Tyres, Pergola, Arigo, Bica, D'lish, Once Upon a Table and Zucca. *Don't miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire. My50 pass can be renewed with Touch 'n Go e-wallet from July 1

KUALA LUMPUR: From Tuesday (July 1), My50 pass renewals can be made via the Touch 'n Go e-wallet as part of the government's move to digitalise public transport systems, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke. According to Loke, users can also be verified as Malaysian citizens via the e-know-your-customer (EKYC) system. 'Through the app, people can renew their My50 pass by using the NFC (near field communication) enabled TnG card,' he said here on Thursday (June 26). At present, My50 passes need to be renewed at RapidKL counters and the process takes two to three minutes per person, he noted. 'Imagine if there are 15 customers at one time, waiting times can go over 45 minutes. 'That's why I always get complaints about long queues at (such) counters,' he said. More to come

Second charity cup will honour teen footballer who died from one in a billion brain tumour

At just 17 years old, Max Jones was given the same devastating cancer diagnosis that claimed the lives of both his mum and gran. A brave East Kilbride teenager who lost his battle with a rare brain cancer will be remembered in a charity football match later this month. Max Jones passed away at Kilbryde Hospice on July 13, 2023 - just nine days after his 19th birthday. ‌ At 17 Max was the youngest patient to receive palliative care at Kilbryde Hospice after being diagnosed with a "one in a billion" glioblastoma diagnosis that had claimed the lives of both his mum and gran. ‌ Honouring his memory, best friends Aidan McCabe and Aiden Farrell set up the Max Jones Charity Cup last year, an annual celebration of his life, which raised an incredible £13k for Kilbryde Hospice in memory of their heroic friend. Download the Lanarkshire Live app today After last year's success the organisers are now expanding the upcoming event to include four teams: MXJ United, Kilbryde FC, Max XI and Buckfast Rovers which are made up of Max's friends and old teammates at Claremont AFC, EKYC and East Kilbride Thistle. This year's tournament will take place on June 28 at Kirktonholme's Enviro Clean Stadium. ‌ Aiden Farrell said: "We host this event in memory of Max Jones who sadly died after a year long battle with a glioblastoma brain tumour. "Max was an energetic, fit young man who was always playing football with a football club or with friends. He spent many years playing with EKYC so to use their venue is a touching tribute to the player he was. ‌ "Max spent six months under the care of the amazing inpatient unit at Kilbryde Hospice where the care and compassion was incredible. Kilbryde staff not only cared for Max but also for all his friends and family, providing some memories that will last a lifetime." In the summer of 2022, Max was given the same devastating cancer diagnosis that claimed the lives of both his mum and gran. ‌ Heartbreakingly, he was given just weeks to live when he was admitted to the Kilbryde Hospice with the "one in a billion" series of deadly brain tumours at the beginning of last year. A professional cookery student and keen footballer, Max had just won the Claremont AFC 2004s coaches' player of the year when he was diagnosed with glioblastoma aged 17. He also played for EKYC and East Kilbride Thistle over the years. He had started getting headaches and pains in his legs and the pain became so unbearable he went to Hairmyres Hospital where a CT and MRI scan discovered the 'aggressive' stage 4 tumour on his brain. ‌ Max's gran Margaret O'Kane, from Wishaw, died from glioblastoma in October 2008, aged 66, and his mum Angie Jones, from East Kilbride, died from the disease just 14 months later, aged 36. Max was the youngest patient to receive palliative care at Kilbryde Hospice. ‌ Aidan added: "I was a close friend of Max's and spent almost every day up at the hospice while he was under their care. To see the treatment that patients receive first-hand is unbelievable and I will never forget all the things they did for us and they continue to be a great support to the whole friend group. "The hospice gave Max a new lease of life at a time where there was no hope left in his battle with cancer and for that we are eternally grateful. "So come along on June 28 to Enviro Clean Stadium and support your local hospice. They need us and we will never know when we might need them." ‌ Tickets for the event cost £5 and gates will open at 11am with the first kick off at 12pm. The tournament will consist of four games, two semi-finals, a third place playoff and a final with the final set to finish close to 5pm. Raffle tickets will be on sale throughout the day for £1 and supporters can also have a go at a tombola which will be £1 for three shots. ‌ Entertainment for the kids on the day will include a penalty shoot-out. *Don't miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire.
