Former Texas Longhorns star Scottie Scheffler one behind leaders at British Open 2025
The first round of the 153rd Open Championship is in the books and former Texas Longhorns golfer Scottie Scheffler is once again in the hunt. Chasing his second major championship of 2025 at the year's final major, Scheffler sits one behind the leaders after rallying to shoot 68 at Royal Portrush. The top-ranked golfer in the world posted his 3-under score early in the day at the Northern Ireland course, but by day's end, five golfers had shot 4-under. Jacob Skov, Olesen, Haotong Li, Matt Fitzpartick, Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Harris English all shot 67 and sit a stroke ahead of the Texas Ex. Scheffler got hot on his way into the clubhouse, making back-to-back birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 in one of the two major championships the Dallas native has yet to win. Scheffler has won the Masters twice and two months ago won his first PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. 2024 was a breakout year for the former Longhorns golfer. In addition to acting as ESPN College GameDay guest picker for the Texas-Georgia game in October, he was also named the USA TODAY Sports Athlete of the Year. The former Texas golfer's 2024 is one of the most epic seasons any athlete has ever had in any sport. A win in Great Britain would give Scheffler three of the four jewels in the career grand slam, to go with his Olympic Gold Medal. No player in history has the grand slam plus Olympic gold. The ESPYs gave Lee Corso the most wholesome tribute as he nears retirement
As ESPN College GameDay fans know by now, legendary analyst Lee Corso will be making his final appearance on the Saturday program on Aug. 30. Corso's retirement signals the literal end to an era of ESPN's college football coverage, and this year's ESPYs made sure to give the network great a very wholesome tribute during the broadcast for his 38 seasons of exemplary work. Corso was on hand for Wednesday's ceremony in Los Angeles, where he was celebrated in the most Corso way possible. Like, this Corso-themed jamboree is just perfect for our favorite mascot-head wearing college football expert. The joy in Corso's face during this wonderful tribute radiated throughout the Dolby Theatre. Like, c'mon, this is delightful. Corso is good people, and he deserved this moment and more.

Brian Kelly Gives Honest Reaction to Reports of Nick Saban Returning To College Football
Brian Kelly Gives Honest Reaction to Reports of Nick Saban Returning To College Football originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As rumors of Nick Saban potentially returning to coaching continue to circulate, LSU coach Brian Kelly made his stance clear, and his comments stood in stark contrast to the skepticism shared by others in the college football world. Advertisement Speaking about the speculation, Kelly offered nothing but praise for the former Alabama coach. 'It'd be better for college football if Nick Saban is coaching. Period,' Kelly said. 'There's nobody better to develop players and certainly build championship programs. It'd be a great day if he was back in it.' Kelly's comments came in response to a recent report from former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy, who floated the idea that Saban might not be entirely done with coaching. The former Crimson Tide quarterback-turned-college football analyst attempted to dispel the notion that Saban could return. Advertisement 'A very much in-the-know person that I have a lot of respect for and have spent a lot of time around and just really, really admire,' McElroy said. 'They seem to think Nick Saban's not done coaching. I had a similar reaction. He's pretty adamant that he thinks Nick Saban will be coaching again. "Look, if it weren't someone notable, I'd never say a word.' That theory was quickly dismissed by longtime SEC analyst Paul Finebaum, who recently appeared on the "McElroy & Cubelic In The Morning" podcast and said he doesn't see Saban returning to the sideline anytime soon. 'No,' Finebaum said when asked if a comeback was possible, adding that Saban is currently enjoying retirement, spending time in Florida, playing golf, and earning a substantial income in his new role as an ESPN College GameDay analyst. Despite Finebaum's belief that Saban is content, Kelly's comments reflect the broader respect Saban still commands across the sport. The seven-time national champion, who retired in January 2024, transformed Alabama into a perennial powerhouse and remains a defining figure in college football history. Whether or not Saban ever returns, it's clear coaches like Kelly still see immense value in what he brought, and could still bring, to the game.
