Valakari embracing life in Championship as he plots top-flight return

Simo Valakari says St Johnstone will embrace life in the Championship as he plots a return to the top-flight at the first time of asking. The Perth club were relegated, ending a 15-year run in the Premiership, after finishing bottom of the table last season. And while Valakari, who took over from Craig Levein in October, is aware of how tough and unforgiving the second tier can be, he is aiming to put 'all the little things' in place to give his side the best chance of an instant return. As St Johnstone players returned for pre-season this week, he said: 'It's good to be back with the players, during the off-season you work behind the scenes on different things and reflecting on the season previous. 'We look at the experience we got from that and how we can improve going forward, and working with recruitment, but you can't beat this feeling being back with the players. 'We are all looking forward now, we have reflected very brutally and honestly on last season and what we could have and should have done better. 'Now it is about life in the Championship, and we are very eager to get going and very excited to be here. 'We know how tough a league it is, but that is where we are now, and we want to take the club back to the Premiership; that is our aim. 'We want to rebuild and make the club stronger. Wherever that takes us, you never know, it is a long season, and to win promotion and win the title, we will need all the little things to go our way. 'So it is too early to say for sure that we are going to do this or going to do that, all we can do is focus on one day at a time and make the best for ourselves, and then maybe we have a chance.' The Saints get their competitive season under way against East Kilbride in the group stages of the League Cup on July 12. They will also play Raith Rovers, Elgin City, and Inverness Caley Thistle in that competition, before beginning their Championship campaign with a home game against Partick Thistle on August 2. South Lanarkshire takeaways named and shamed for 'deliberately' dodging tax payments

East Kilbride Indian Marmaris and Rutherglen Chinese Kai Xin have been given a financial penalty after failing to comply with tax obligations. Two South Lanarkshire takeaways have been publicly named and shamed by HMRC for 'deliberately' defaulting on their tax bills. East Kilbride fast food outlet Mabow Limited (trading as 'Marmaris'), formerly of Stuart Street, was fined £111,996 after defaulting on tax payments of£159,994. ‌ Rutherglen takeaway Kai Xin Street Limited (trading as 'Kai Xin'), of King Street, was fined £177,568 after defaulting on tax payments of £299,701. ‌ In order to be outed by the government department, a person or business must have deliberately defaulted on more than £25,000 in tax. HMRC says that everyone on the list has either 'deliberate errors in their tax returns' or has 'deliberately failed to comply with their tax obligations'. Last October Lanarkshire Live reported that Marmaris was found to have defaulted on £159,994 in tax from January 1, 2017, to March 31, 2021, and October 1, 2021 to December 31, 2021, and handed a penalty of £111,996. Kai Xin Street Ltd was slapped with a £177,568 penalty for defaulting on a tax bill of £299,701 from February 1, 2018 to January 31, 2022. HMRC says the list identifies people who deliberately mishandled their tax affairs and is used as a tool to take "firm action against the minority who refuse to pay the tax they owe." ‌ Kevin Hubbard, HMRC's Director of Individuals and Small Business Compliance, said: 'The overwhelming majority pay the tax they owe, but for those who refuse, we use a range of tools to take firm action. 'This includes publishing the names of those penalised for deliberate defaults to influence taxpayer behaviour and encourage defaulters to engage with HMRC.' Lanarkshire Live has tried to contact the firms named on the list.

Josh Taylor advice delights East Kilbride boxer after narrow win at Gladiators III event

Lewis Connelly continued his 100 per cent start but was left frustrated by his own display East Kilbride boxer Lewis Connelly admits some words of encouragement from former undisputed light-welterweight Josh Taylor champion eased his frustrations after a narrow win at the Gladiators III event on Saturday night. The 24-year-old, from Calderwood, was fighting in front of a home town audience at Playsport and maintained his 100 per cent start to his pro career, defeating Mario Valenzuela Portillo by a score of 39-37. ‌ Connelly, who is now sitting on 3-0 in his fights so far, was frustrated by his display but a chat with the four-time world champion, who was in attendance, cheered him up. ‌ He said: 'It was tougher than I expected. He [Portillo] was quite an awkward guy to catch clean. I kind of struggled to put my punches together on him, to be honest. 'I think my persistence paid off. I was more active and just stayed on him, I didn't allow him to build any momentum after the first round. 'But I wasn't too pleased with my performance. It was quite a frustrating one. He was quite hard to pin down so I'm just glad I got through it and got the win. 'I was chatting to Josh afterwards and I was telling him about my frustrations with the fight and he was giving me some advice, saying you are going to have fights like that. They don't always go to plan, it is just about getting through them and pushing forward. 'He was telling me not to beat myself up about it. ‌ 'It was really good to get that from him, it made me realise I was maybe being too hard on myself, if he has been there and been in that position before. 'It makes you realise it maybe isn't as bad as you think it is. I'm 3-0 so I can't argue with that. It has gone well so far.' It certainly wasn't plain sailing for Lewis with him taking a blow to the side of the head and suffering a burst eardrum that is set to limit his training for a fourth test in his career. ‌ Connelly could be due to perform in the next Gladiators event, set to be held in October, and that could be a more realistic next target. He added: 'I'll rest up for a wee bit now because I suffered an injury.'I burst my eardrum, so that was a sore one. I think it'll take a couple of months to heal. 'I will be back in the gym this week but I can't do too much.'We are back in October at Playsport but I am hoping for another fight before that, but I'll need to see how it goes with the injury.'

Temporary 10mph speed limit to be introduced on road next month

A temporary speed limit of 10mph is being introduced on Glasgow Road. South Lanarkshire Council has announced the speed restriction for Nerston Village, East Kilbride, due to repairs being carried out by Scottish Water. The new limit will be in effect from July 15 to 19, affecting the section of Glasgow Road between Crookedshields Road and East Nerston Grove. Traffic signs, as prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016, will be used to indicate the new speed limit. The council has utilised powers given by the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, and the Road Traffic (Temporary Restrictions) Act 1991, to enforce the temporary measure.
