Valakari embracing life in Championship as he plots top-flight return
Simo Valakari says St Johnstone will embrace life in the Championship as he plots a return to the top-flight at the first time of asking.
The Perth club were relegated, ending a 15-year run in the Premiership, after finishing bottom of the table last season.
And while Valakari, who took over from Craig Levein in October, is aware of how tough and unforgiving the second tier can be, he is aiming to put 'all the little things' in place to give his side the best chance of an instant return.
As St Johnstone players returned for pre-season this week, he said: 'It's good to be back with the players, during the off-season you work behind the scenes on different things and reflecting on the season previous.
'We look at the experience we got from that and how we can improve going forward, and working with recruitment, but you can't beat this feeling being back with the players.
'We are all looking forward now, we have reflected very brutally and honestly on last season and what we could have and should have done better.
'Now it is about life in the Championship, and we are very eager to get going and very excited to be here.
'We know how tough a league it is, but that is where we are now, and we want to take the club back to the Premiership; that is our aim.
'We want to rebuild and make the club stronger. Wherever that takes us, you never know, it is a long season, and to win promotion and win the title, we will need all the little things to go our way.
'So it is too early to say for sure that we are going to do this or going to do that, all we can do is focus on one day at a time and make the best for ourselves, and then maybe we have a chance.'
The Saints get their competitive season under way against East Kilbride in the group stages of the League Cup on July 12. They will also play Raith Rovers, Elgin City, and Inverness Caley Thistle in that competition, before beginning their Championship campaign with a home game against Partick Thistle on August 2.

From his appointment in November 2024, he approached the role with professionalism, integrity and a clear commitment to our aims, including through the integration of several promising players from the club's academy into our first team environment. 'Ruud moves on with the respect and thanks of everyone at the football club for his dedication and hard work, and with our very best wishes for the future. 'Preparation for the EFL Championship season will continue with the planned start of pre-season on Monday, June 30. 'First team coaching staff will oversee the delivery of those plans until a new manager is appointed. 'There will be no further comment until this process has been completed.' Van Nistelrooy replaced Steve Cooper on November 29 and won four points in his opening two games. But that was as good as it got, as a run of 15 defeats from their next 16 matches sealed their fate. Within that run, they lost nine successive home games without scoring – a new top-flight record. Once relegation was confirmed, the Foxes improved, taking seven points from their final five outings to finish 18th, 13 points from safety. Van Nistelrooy called for talks with the club's hierarchy as soon as relegation was confirmed, but was left hanging for a number of weeks. The Dutchman said: 'I would like to personally thank the Leicester City players, coaches, academy and all the staff I have worked with for their professionalism and dedication during my time at the club and to thank the fans for their support, and take this opportunity to wish the club well for the future.' The Foxes face the prospect of having to deal with a significant points deduction in the Championship, having been charged by the Premier League for breaking Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Leicester begin their season with the visit of Sheffield Wednesday on August 10.

North Wales Crusaders' Eaves has lofty league aims
With more than half of the season now completed, Crusaders are the top side in the division and they are well set to maintain their title push during the next few months. Following the 14-4 win in their top-of-the-table clash with Midlands Hurricanes earlier this month, leaders North Wales are three points with eight games left to play. Asked if North Wales could go all the way this season, Eaves told CruCast: 'We'd like to think so. Obviously, internally, we've spoken about it. 'We had a few chats in pre-season. We knew looking round in that changing room and the playing group that we've got pretty much class all over the field. 'Obviously, there's Championship experience, Super League experience and that. So, we know what we can do as a playing group and I think the only people who's going to beat us this season is going to be ourselves. 'Obviously, you've seen that in the Swinton game, we beat ourselves more than anything and I think... if there's going to be a downfall, it's going to be ourselves this year.' Eaves, who started his career off with Super League St Helens, is here for the long haul and he has signed a new two-year deal with the club. This will keep him in North Wales until the end of the 2027 season. A product of the St Helens' academy system, and with Super League appearances to his name, Eaves has also featured on loan at Whitehaven followed by moves to Newcastle and Swinton respectively, prior to linking up with Carl Forster's side this season. Having never dropped below the Championship before this season, Eaves has played a pivotal role in North Wales' rise to the top of League One so far in 2025, leading to a new two-year-deal being signed. Head coach Forster told the club's website: 'With clubs now allowed to speak to played in the final year of their contracts, it's been important for us to begin the conversations with our lads. 'Josh is an outstanding player, he may not always grab the headlines, but both on and off the field he's a vital piece of the puzzle and his ability to move us around the field is second to none. 'I'm delighted that Josh has extended his stay here by a further two years, and I'm confident that together we can achieve some great things.' There are no League One games this weekend and Crusaders are next in action at home to second-placed Workington Town on Sunday, July 6.
