Petition in SC Seeks removal of MCD toll collection points at Delhi borders, ET Infra
Advt Advt By The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has approached Supreme Court seeking removal of the physical entry booths set up by Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for collection of entry fee and green charge from commercial vehicles (CVs) at inter-state highway authority filed the application in the pending M C Mehta case in which the apex court has been monitoring the pollution crisis in National Capital Region and has been passing orders since the 1980s. The NHAI, in its application, TOI has learnt, submitted to SC that huge investments made in highway development to improve connectivity to Delhi have not yielded the desired results because of congestion caused at the borders by toll collection points Officials said NHAI has mentioned the several projects executed across NCR, including the Eastern Peripheral Expressway and Western Peripheral Expressway, which were built as bypasses for vehicles not destined for Delhi. These two projects were implemented following SC officials highlighted that since collection of Environment Compensation Charge (ECC) from vehicles was started in compliance with an SC order, only the apex court could take a call on the NHAI has approached the apex court soon after Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari chaired a meeting on decongestion of Delhi with Delhi Lt Governor V K Saxena, chief minister Rekha Gupta and other ministers.
