The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has approached Supreme Court seeking removal of the physical entry booths set up by Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for collection of entry fee and green charge from commercial vehicles (CVs) at inter-state borders. The highway authority filed the application in the pending M C Mehta case in which the apex court has been monitoring the pollution crisis in National Capital Region and has been passing orders since the 1980s. The NHAI, in its application, TOI has learnt, submitted to SC that huge investments made in highway development to improve connectivity to Delhi have not yielded the desired results because of congestion caused at the borders by toll collection points Officials said NHAI has mentioned the several projects executed across NCR, including the Eastern Peripheral Expressway and Western Peripheral Expressway, which were built as bypasses for vehicles not destined for Delhi. These two projects were implemented following SC directives. The officials highlighted that since collection of Environment Compensation Charge (ECC) from vehicles was started in compliance with an SC order, only the apex court could take a call on the matter. The NHAI has approached the apex court soon after Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari chaired a meeting on decongestion of Delhi with Delhi Lt Governor V K Saxena, chief minister Rekha Gupta and other ministers. Gadkari had asked Delhi govt and MCD officials to work out a plan to do away with physical toll collection points, which are a source of daily "harassment" for lakhs of commuters. He also suggested that Delhi govt should find new sources of revenue, in place of collecting entry fee and ECC on national highways, including at Sirhaul, Ghazipur, Badarpur, Tikri and Kundli, with the toll collection points being a primary cause of congestion."Even before we start collecting toll for highways built with huge investments, such as Dwarka Expressway and UER-II, MCD has started putting up barriers to collect entry fee from CVs. What is the use of such highways if people have to face traffic jams owing to the inefficiency of the municipal body?" an official wondered.Earlier this month, top officials of Delhi govt, MCD and NHAI had agreed to have a multi-lane free flow toll and entry fee collection system to do away with physical booths. In the MLFF system, vehicles don't need to stop as overhead cameras installed for each lane will read the vehicle registration numbers and automatically deduct the toll from FASTag wallets linked to vehicles.

Amid OBC uncertainty, Bengal education department keeps UG admission options open; merit list on hold till court decision

KOLKATA: Applicants for undergraduate college seats in most of Bengal's varsities can either follow the OBC list that existed here before 2010 as of now or wait for the Supreme Court's final order on the issue. The state higher education department has issued a notification that leaves both options open as of now to skirt the legal logjam over the OBC issue. The SC is now hearing a petition on OBC categorisation in Bengal. The centralised admission portal closes on Tuesday night but officials have already extended the deadline once and have the option of extending it again to wait for a clearer signal after the SC's next hearing. The post-2010 list had 113 sub-groups - 77 from the Muslim community and 36 from Hindu - that was scrapped by the Calcutta High Court in 2024. The state has challenged this in the apex court. In the interim, it has also brought out a fresh OBC list comprising 140 sub-groups (77 Muslim, 63 Hindu sub-groups) but has increased the reservation to 17%. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo The HC on June 18 stayed this fresh list as well. "Everything depends on the court order. But a final decision is likely to be taken on Tuesday," a senior higher education department official said. Admissions to most of the state's varsities, like Calcutta University, Rabindra Bharati University, Burdwan University, Vidyasagar University and North Bengal University, will be impacted by this. Admissions to depend on state's decision Admissions conducted by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Board - the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination and the entrance test for admission to Presidency University - will also depend on the state's decision though they are not part of the centralised admission portal. Jadavpur University is following the pre-2010 7% reservation formula for the OBC category. The online admission portal started accepting applications for undergraduate berths across 460 colleges in Bengal from June 18. Around 20 lakh applications have been submitted but the merit list cannot be prepared till a final decision is taken.

World Youth Skills Day 2025: Date, theme, history, significance – all you need to know

World Youth Skills Day 2025 History and Theme: To highlight the importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, decent work, and entrepreneurship, the United Nations General Assembly in November 2014 designated July 15 to be celebrated as World Youth Skills Day. The inaugural celebration took place on July 15, 2015, and this year, in 2025, it will be observed on Tuesday, July 15, marking the 10th anniversary of World Youth Skills Day (WYSD). This year's theme centres on youth empowerment through AI and digital skills, emphasising that the importance of equipping youth with AI and future-ready skills can address today's challenges and build a more peaceful, inclusive, and sustainable future. According to UN data, approximately 450 million young people (7 out of 10) are economically disengaged due to a lack of necessary skills to thrive in the labour market. While AI can pose serious risks if not implemented equitably, it's undeniable that it is transforming how we live, learn, and work. This is why World Youth Skills Day aims to raise awareness and understanding of the importance of youth skill development in response to the challenges of unemployment and underemployment that young people face worldwide. This observance promotes vocational training, education, and apprenticeships as pathways to enhance youth employability and entrepreneurship. On #WorldYouthSkillsDay, let's celebrate the power of skill, innovation, and determination. As we invest in youth, we invest in a stronger future. May every young mind be empowered with the tools to shape a better, more sustainable world. Skill up, rise up, and lead the change! — Nitin Gadkari (@nitin_gadkari) July 15, 2025 Organisations, educational institutions, and communities organise skill development workshops, training programs, and career fairs to provide practical learning opportunities and connect youth with employers.
