Ambedkar hosp carries out 5th rare heart surgery

Raipur: The Department of heart, chest, and vascular surgery at the Advanced Cardiac Institute of state-run Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital achieved a significant feat by successfully performing its fifth consecutive surgery for Ebstein's Anomaly , a rare congenital heart defect. This accomplishment positions Ambedkar Hospital as the first cardiac centre, both govt and private, in the state to reach this medical team, led by heart surgeon and department head Dr Krishnakant Sahu, operated on a 36-year-old female patient whose left ventricle was functioning at a severely reduced capacity of 20%. Despite the surgery's global success rate being less than 10%, the patient fully recovered and was discharged without requiring a permanent pacemaker, which is typically needed in nearly 50% of such cases. Dr Sahu explained that the patient experienced symptoms such as breathlessness, a very rapid heartbeat, and frequent fainting spells. Ebstein's Anomaly involves a malformed tricuspid valve and an underdeveloped right ventricle, leading to impaired heart function. Statistically, 13% of affected infants do not survive birth, and most others do not live beyond 25 to 30 years without surgical condition, known as atrialization of the right ventricle, significantly restricts heart function and often leads to heart failure or procedure faced delays due to a temporary shortage of surgical supplies. However, following the restoration of supplies, four open-heart surgeries were completed in the last week alone.
