Sabah Energy Commission backs state's TVET drive with electrical competency certification
KOTA KINABALU: A total of 15 training institutions across Sabah have been accredited by the Energy Commission of Sabah (Ecos) to run Electrical Competency Programmes across various categories.
The certification was handed over on May 19 during the launch of the Sabah TVET Council, witnessed by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya who represented the Chief Minister.
Ecos chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid said the move demonstrated their commitment to support the state government's efforts to promote Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a preferred path for local youths.
'This accreditation is expected to boost industry confidence in the quality of TVET graduates from Sabah, thereby improving their employability and contributing to the state's economic development,' he said.
Ecos also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the state-run Technical and Commercial Training Institute (ILTP) under the TVET Institution Adoption Programme, which will focus on competency development in energy-related sectors such as electricity, gas and renewable energy.
One of the key collaborations under the MOU is the development of a Gas Installer Competency Programme at ILTP aimed at increasing the number of certified gas personnel in Sabah. ECoS will provide technical expertise and advisory support in curriculum development, training modules and facility requirements.
The ILTP will also be gradually upgraded to run Electrical Competency Programmes in the Electrical Machine Supervisor (up to B4 level) and Electrical Wiring (up to PW4 level) categories, under Ecos technical guidance.
Nasser said both parties would work closely to enhance the employability of ILTP graduates and Ecos would serve as the main reference body to ensure ongoing compliance and accreditation.
The 16 accredited institutions include UMS Investment Holdings, UTM-MPRC Institute for Oil and Gas, Institut Kemahiran Mara Kota Kinabalu, ILP Kota Kinabalu, IKBN Kinarut, GiatMara centres in Semporna, Kota Belud, Sandakan, Tawau, Kinabatangan, Keningau, Gaya and Limbawang, Akademi Binaan Malaysia Sandakan, Institut Latihan Teknik & Perdagangan, ILP Sandakan, and IEM Training Academy Sdn Bhd.

PolyCC graduate employability hits 98.8% in 2024
MELAKA: Polytechnics and Community Colleges (PolyCC) continue to demonstrate the effectiveness of the national Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system, achieving an impressive graduate employability rate of 98.8 percent in 2024. Higher Education Ministry Secretary-General (KSU) Datuk Dr Anesee Ibrahim said the achievement was the result of strong collaboration between PolyCC and nearly 20,000 industries through the implementation of high-impact programmes such as Work-Based Learning, Structured Industrial Training, as well as Professional and Competency Certification. 'The academic programmes offered at PolyCC are ensured to gain accreditation and recognition from authorised professional bodies such as the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), the Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT), and professional certification agencies. 'This accreditation proves that Polytechnic and Community College graduates receive formal recognition from the government, both domestically and internationally, as well as from relevant industries,' he said in Ayer Keroh here today. He was speaking at the 22nd Convocation Ceremony of Politeknik Melaka, which was also attended by Dr Shamsuri Abdullah, Deputy Director-General (Planning) of the Department of Polytechnic and Community College Education. Elaborating further, Anesee said efforts to produce well-rounded and entrepreneurially-minded graduates were also being emphasised, with 119 entrepreneurship incubators successfully established this year, involving 476 students and generating nearly RM800,000 in sales. 'Students are exposed to various programmes during their studies, including skills competitions, entrepreneurship activities, research, volunteerism, and sports, to shape holistic and dynamic character,' he said. He added that PolyCC is also actively forging partnerships with various international institutions from countries such as Russia, Japan, Korea, Türkiye, China and Indonesia, to strengthen academic and research collaboration in line with the ministry's focus on the internationalisation of higher education. 'This move aligns with the ministry's aspiration to strengthen Malaysia's position as a world-class higher education hub, while elevating PolyCC as a leading TVET institution at the international level,' he said. Anesee noted that PolyCC now stands as a premier TVET institution with 36 polytechnics and 106 community colleges, involving nearly 15,000 staff and 97,000 active students, including in Melaka, which hosts two polytechnics and six community colleges. 'This year, a total of 32,087 graduates from polytechnics and community colleges will have been or are being celebrated in 28 convocation ceremonies held nationwide,' he said. - Bernama

Sabah Oil & Gas Terminal integrated maintenance postponed
KOTA KINABALU (Aug 2): The temporary shutdown for scheduled maintenance at the Sabah Oil & Gas Terminal (SOGT) has been postponed to a date that will be determined later. According to the Chief Executive Officer of ECoS, Datuk Ir. Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid, 'the postponement at SOGT was made after taking into account the current situation of the Sabah Grid and the additional time needed to complete the testing of Independent Power. Producer (IPP) power generation units in Kimanis using an alternative diesel fuel, in addition to ongoing repair works at other power plants owned by Sabah Electricity and IPPs.' He added that the decision was made after assessing the risk of power supply disruptions to the Sabah Grid based on current conditions, compared to the impact of delaying the maintenance work at SOGT. 'This aims to ensure that consumers in Sabah and Labuan are not affected by power supply rationing,' he said in a statement on Saturday. The integrated maintenance work at SOGT was initially scheduled from August 1 to 7 before it was postponed to August 5 to 11 and then to a date that will be determined later.
