Man receives fine for causing damage to Paddington Bear statue in Penrith

A 56-year-old man from London has received a fine for causing damage to a Paddington Bear statue in Penrith. Anil Puir, aged 56 of Stanstead Road, London appeared before Carlisle Magistrates Court on Tuesday 22 July after being charged with criminal damage. The statue and surrounding flower beds were damaged on Monday 2 December 2024. Community Beat Officer, PC Stewart Green said: 'Eden NPT will continue to target those who seek to commit offences such as this within our local community, including through Operation Enhance - our operation dedicated to tackling antisocial behaviour and violence in hotspot areas including in Penrith town centre. 'I hope this conviction serves as a reminder to other offenders that this type of behaviour will not be tolerated by Cumbria Police."

A person was arrested on Sunday after testing over the prescribed alcohol limit for driving. Eden neighbourhood police team (NPT) arrested the person after they a positive drugs wipe for cannabis was also found. The person remained in custody following the arrest. A spokesperson for Eden NPT said: 'It's been a really busy weekend for Eden NPT, working together with our Response colleagues. 'They currently remain in custody at this time.' Speeding, using a mobile phone at the wheel, not wearing a seatbelt and driving under the influence of drink and/or drugs make up what police call 'the Fatal Four' whilst driving.

CUMBRIA Police seized a vehicle in the Eden area this week. Officers seized the vehicle as the driver only had a provisional license. The van was initially stopped following reports of burglaries in the area. The four people inside the van were searched, but nothing was found. In a post on social media, Cumbria Police wrote: "Following the report of recent burglaries, Eden NPT have been on patrol tonight. "The van was showing no insurance, tax, MOT, or named keeper. The occupants of the vehicle were stopped and searched under Section 1 of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act to search for articles to steal. "The four occupants were searched, but no items were found. Although the driver only had a provisional licence and the vehicle was seized."

Police officers have seized a car that was doing donuts in a car park following reports of anti-social behaviour in Penrith. Officers from the Eden Neighbourhood Policing Team seized a car under section 59 of the Police Reform Act after receiving a complaint from a member of the public. Residents have told Cumbria Police that there is an issue with the anti-social use of vehicles in the car parks on Ullswater Road in Penrith. The driver, who was performing donuts, was reported for driving without due care and attention. A spokesperson said: "Eden NPT will continue to target ASB and will take positive action when ever possible."

A lost duck was helped across the road by police officers in a scene which could have come straight from the film Hot Fuzz. Cumbria Police's Eden neighbourhood police team (NPT) said one of its officers found the duck on a road in Appleby on Saturday night. They helped the bird return to a riverbank about 9m (30ft) away, a spokesperson said. The officer was "Eden NPT's answer to Sgt Angel", it said in a social media post, adding: "We aren't too far from Sandford!"
