Install solar rooftop systems, people urged
Raptadu: MLA Paritala Sunitha and TDP leader Paritala Sriram have urged the people of Chennekothapalli, Ramagiri and Kanaganapalli mandals to take the lead in installing solar rooftop systems on their homes, setting an example for the rest of the state. The awareness event on the 'PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana' and solar rooftop construction was held at Nagasamudram Gate in Chennekothapalli mandal. The event was organised by the Electricity Department at the ADE office, with participation from Sriram, SE Sampath Kumar, solar company representatives, bank officials, TDP leaders and the public. A demonstration was set up to showcase how solar rooftops work, their costs, government subsidies, bank loans and the resulting benefits. Speaking on the occasion, Paritala Sriram said he was proud that the initiative was starting from the Raptadu constituency in Sri Sathya Sai district. He explained that while solar panels were once limited to agricultural projects, now every household can generate its own electricity and even sell surplus power to the government, significantly reducing electricity bills. He praised Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for encouraging such advanced technology, saying the CM not only delivers political speeches but also acts like a responsible head of the family, guiding people toward practical, beneficial solutions. MLA Paritala Sunitha emphasised that the initiative would begin in their constituency, and they were committed to leading any programme that benefits the public. She recalled how rising electricity bills once made even small lighting a concern for the poor. The PM Surya Ghar scheme addresses this by allowing rooftop solar installations, offering up to Rs 60,000 in subsidies, with full coverage for SC/ST households and an additional Rs 20,000 subsidy for BCs from the State government.

'Illegal Occupant Also Entitled To Electricity Connection': Calcutta HC Sets Aside Denial Order
Last Updated: The HC's circuit bench at Port Blair ruled that an illegal occupant of government revenue land can't be denied electricity solely on the ground of not providing occupancy documents The Calcutta High Court's circuit bench at Port Blair recently directed the Electricity Department to provide a power connection to a woman residing on encroached government land, emphasising that access to electricity cannot be denied merely due to a lack of formal ownership documents. The bench of Justice Krishna Rao delivered the verdict on July 11, 2025, in the petition filed by one Krishnawathi, who had challenged the rejection of her electricity application by the Assistant Engineer-II (HQ), Electricity Department, Sri Vijaya Puram. The petitioner had applied for a new electricity connection on June 24, 2024, disclosing her occupation of the land. However, her request was turned down on the grounds that she failed to submit the documentation mandated under Clause 5.30 of the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) Regulation, 2018, which includes ownership records like sale deeds, tax receipts, or NOCs from landowners. The authorities had also relied on an Andaman and Nicobar Administration Circular dated October 19, 2023, to bolster their rejection. The clause, while listing acceptable documents for ownership or occupancy, leaves little room for encroachers to comply, effectively denying them access to electricity. The court, however, took note of the unique position of the petitioner, who had built a house and was residing on government revenue land without electricity. It observed that the rigidity of Clause 5.30 cannot be used as a tool to prevent basic service access for occupants who are otherwise lawfully residing on the premises, even if they are encroachers. Referring to a full bench judgment in Abhimanyu Mazumdar vs The Superintending Engineer, the court emphasised that illegal occupiers, too, are entitled to electricity connections. A similar view had been recently taken in a related case [WPA/213/2025] involving identical facts. Justice Rao firmly stated that the rule requiring documentary proof under Clause 5.30 cannot be enforced against encroachers who, by the very nature of their occupancy, are unable to furnish such documents. He termed the rule's application in this context as a veiled attempt to deny access to electricity on technical grounds. Setting aside the Assistant Engineer's February 14, 2025, order, the court directed the Electricity Department to provide the petitioner a connection within four weeks of receiving the judgment, subject to the fulfilment of all other formalities. view comments First Published: July 15, 2025, 16:26 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
