There's A White Cotton Summer Dress For Everyone – Here Are 5 Of The Best Styles To Buy Now
In 2024 we had Brat Summer: this year, it's the season of the white cotton summer dress. It's not as catchy, sure, but it's also considerably less sweaty. From minimal maxis to crisp poplin shirt dresses, the white cotton dress is the sartorial equivalent of air conditioning – a welcome respite from the cling of acrylic. (As the owner of one too many vintage nylon dresses, I am speaking from experience.) If the SS25 catwalks were anything to go by, designers are in agreement. Most ubiquitous was the white cotton shirt dress, which manifested in mini, midi and maxi forms at Alaïa, Bottega Veneta, and Erdem, respectively. More classic iterations made way for styles with a difference – a flounced hem, split sleeves, or statement cuffs, as seen on Elle Fanning at Cannes last month. The minimal maxi is another sound option for the white summer dress purists among you – it bears no unnecessary decoration, only exaggerated proportions and one or two interesting details. See Brioni's totally perfect, tent-like T-shirt dress or Khaite's very compelling tunic, which appeared on the runway layered atop a pair of silk trousers. For something with a little more romance, we present the white cotton nightie dress – the more demure cousin of the slinky slip. See Bella Hadid's collab with Frankie's bikini, or Harling Ross's collection with If Only If. Equally lovely would be a Broderie Anglaise dress, as seen at 3.1 Phillip Lim, or something with lace cutwork, as at Tove. And if you're not totally ready to relinquish Brat Summer, may we suggest a bubble hem. Alberta Ferretti and Carven proved that the white cotton summer dress can be all sorts of fun via the gathered-hem dresses they showed for SS25. Ready to slip into something a little more comfortable? Here is our edit of the best white cotton summer dresses. Easy, breezy, and not a bead of sweat in sight. Bristol-based vintage seller DuLievre's edit of antique French cotton dresses is unrivalled, while Smock London, Faune and If Only If all make modern iterations. Wear yours with a pair of block-colour ballet flats, chunky silver jewellery, and a basket bag. You can't go wrong with a crisp cotton-poplin shirt dress. Follow the simple but effective styling at Simkhai and style a sweeping maxi with a skinny black belt or do like Alaïa's Pieter Mulier, who dressed up flouncy mini dresses with strappy mules and layered necklaces. The minimal maxi's allure lies in an interesting silhouette – something with oversized proportions or an open back or split sleeves, for example. You'd be forgiven for mistaking styles by Arket for The Row and Khaite, especially when paired with leather flip flops and a single cuff. Spend all of summer in Broderie Anglaise, either in the form of a demure midi dress (with scarlet ballet flats) or something flirtier and thigh-grazing (with Nineties-inspired mules). A white lace dress will do nicely, too. Play with opacity by layering a coloured slip beneath – or, more daringly, not at all. Another bubble-hem summer is upon us, and we're not complaining; this playful detail makes the simplest of white cotton dresses that much more fun. Team Free People's white cotton mini with sleek flip flops and sea-salt hair, or try Cos's midi with jelly shoes and a beaded necklace. 'Prey' Director Keeps Up 'Predator: Killer of Killers' And 'Badlands' Momentum With Secret Sequel
The Predator franchise has grown plenty, but the end is nowhere in sight — if Prey director Dan Trachtenberg can help it, that is. Following the release of the Predator: Killer of Killers animated anthology and the upcoming theatrical premiere of Predator: Badlands , the filmmaker shared with SFX magazine that he 'sort of rushed' developing both projects, and offered a tease of the franchise's future. 'After Prey came out, and I started thinking about sequel stuff, there were three ideas that I had. Killers is one, Badlands is two and the third one is something else,' said Trachtenberg. 'The reason why I felt possessed to make them and sort of why I rushed – I did two at once because I could do, I could multitask with animation – was because I was so eager to get to the third thing.' 'There's a lot of cool ideas out there and none of them are just like, 'Oh, we have to say the next part of this story because it was successful.' All of it is like, 'Whoa, no one has done that in sci-fi. No one has done that in Predator . No one's done that with the creature,' all of those ideas are generated from that instinct. So, yeah, there is definitely a third thing that I'd love to get to when Badlands is finished.' Naturally, details are being tightly kept under lock and key, but there's Predator: Badlands to look forward to in the meantime. Releasing on 7 November, the live-action film stars Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi and Elle Fanning as young Predator Dek and a synthetic called Thia, respectively, who become an unlikely pairing after Dek finds himself on a remote planet in the future. The trailer has also fuelled speculation of a return to the Alien crossover universe, sparking excitement with a flash of Weyland-Yutani branding in Thia's eyes and glimpses of corporate vehicles. As for Killer of Killers , it hit Hulu and Disney+ (outside of the U.S.) on 6 June, featuring a trio of strong-willed fighters from three very different time periods face off against the titular Yautja. Si Jia is a casual geek at heart – or as casual as someone with Sephiroth's theme on her Spotify playlist can get. A fan of movies, games, and Japanese culture, Si Jia's greatest weakness is the Steam Summer Sale. Or any Steam sale, really. Dan Trachtenberg Predator: Badlands Predator: Killer of Killers Prey

'Fantastic' period drama based on real events has fans completely 'hooked'
The Great is a historical and satirical TV comedy-drama loosely based on the rise and reign of Catherine the Great of Russia, the longest-ruling female in the country's history Fans are raving about this period drama, which boasts an all-star cast, sizzling romance, and 18th-century intrigue. The Great is a historical comedy-drama that draws inspiration from the life of Catherine the Great, Russia's longest-reigning female leader. The show follows Catherine's tumultuous marriage to Emperor Peter III, whom she plots to overthrow. Elle Fanning shines as Catherine II, bringing to life the complex and dynamic character. She's joined by Nicolas Hoult, who plays her husband with conviction. Hoult has built a reputation for his versatile performances in shows like Skins and films like the X-Men franchise and About A Boy. Rotten Tomatoes is filled with glowing reviews, with many praising the on-screen chemistry between the leads. One reviewer said: "The chemistry among this supremely well-cast ensemble of incredibly endearing characters was a marvel. Loved every minute of this series..", reports the Express. Another fan raved: "Truly a must-watch - raunchy, clever, witty, beautiful, breathtaking and shocking fun! I've been telling everyone I can. Why is this so under the radar? ? I'm a MAJOR Elle Fanning fan now. She held nothing back and rocked The Great in every way." While the inaugural season was well-received, the subsequent two seasons garnered critical acclaim, with every facet of the show - from the script to the costumes - earning praise. The series, a dark comedy, doesn't take itself too seriously and openly admits its historical inaccuracies, allowing for more creative freedom with its visual elements. The Great's success led to it being nominated for an impressive seven Primetime Emmy Awards. Additionally, both lead actors received Golden Globe nominations for their stellar performances throughout the show's brief duration. "I am hooked," one viewer admitted. "I am so happy that I stumbled upon this series. I adore the wit and drama, and the sex is enjoyable too!". Another glowing review said: "I love this show so much. How can something balance the funny and the abject so perfectly?"Gorgeous to look at; smarter by the episode; makes use of history without being burdened by it; irreverent, low-brow, high-brow, wonderful. "". Initially released on Hulu in 2020, the show was later renewed for a second season, which became a massive hit among telly fans. However, despite its success, the creators decided it was time to wrap up the story, and after its third season aired in 2023, it was announced that it would be the last of The Great - much to viewers' disappointment. Viewers had been keeping their fingers crossed that the drama would carry on, with one fan saying: "This show keeps getting better and better! It's witty, funny, and historically (in)accurate ;) casting is just fabulous, and I'm hoping we'll get many more seasons of this utterly ridiculous story." All three sidesplitting series of the hit period comedy-drama, The Great, can be streamed now on Amazon Prime and Channel 4.

‘The Hunger Games' Intrigue: Studios, Streamers & Indies In The Mix To Buy ‘Sunrise On The Reaping' — The Dish
EXCLUSIVE: Intrigue continues over the destination of Lionsgate's flagship IP, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping with studios, streamers and indie buyers in the mix to pay a lot of money for rights to the movie. As we've reported, the latest installment in the popular franchise was the big-ticket movie at the recent Cannes market. Shooting this summer in Germany with a budget understood to be in the $150M range, the project has amassed an impressive cast including Ralph Fiennes, Elle Fanning, Joseph Zada, Kieran Culkin, Maya Hawke, Jesse Plemons, Ben Wang, Lili Taylor, Whitney Peak, McKenna Grace and Kelvin Harrison Jr. More from Deadline 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' Hot Packages Revving Up As Leatherface Lurks Again – The Dish Everything We Know About The 'Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping' Movie So Far Blumhouse Acquiring 'Saw' Rights From Twisted Pictures - The Dish Despite some hefty asking prices, interest has been solid at a time when buyers are thirsty for tried and trusted IP. We understand Sony and Amazon are among the studios and streamers interested in taking the project — at the right price. Both are understood to be keen on all international rights in pacts that could end up shaking out in the $100M range. One of the sticking points might be whether Lionsgate is prepared to relinquish its direct distribution in the UK and one or two other markets as part of the deal. Talks continue. Intriguingly, it has been suggested to us by market sources that there is interest from at least one suitor in worldwide rights to the movie. However, Lionsgate sources are adamant that's a non-starter and not something they would entertain even if there were an offer, which they didn't confirm. Lionsgate is due to release the film in the U.S. late next year. It would be a major shock and seemingly not on the cards that they'd give up domestic rights to such a cornerstone IP. It wouldn't make strategic sense, even if the price were enormous. Lionsgate has gone down a similar route on other projects, however. The studio recently flipped its Henry Cavill Highlander reboot over to Amazon MGM for the world. A few years ago it sold most of the world, including U.S., to Amazon for Jennifer Lopez film Shotgun Wedding, and the same streamer will release Lionsgate-produced upcoming sequel Another Simple Favor domestically. Lionsgate recently sold all international rights to the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic to Universal. There also were talks with studio buyers when The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes was on sale four years ago. Ultimately, Lionsgate did what it tends to do on the franchise and sold the film to independent international buyers in individual territories. This may well be the route it takes this time. As we revealed in Cannes, some of the asks have been hefty. Multiple sources told us that the Germany ask ranged between $20M-32M, depending on other movies being included in a package deal. Plenty of buyers we spoke to balked at their territory asks. But we hear that others are prepared to pay. If Lynne Ramsay's arthouse drama Die My Love sold for $23M during Cannes, maybe those Lionsgate prices are more reasonable than first blush. Lionsgate likes to package big movies with others on its slate. We've heard from market sources that in this instance Lionsgate has tried to entice buyers with packages of up to seven other movies in addition to the latest Hunger Games, some of those for multiple territories too. We gather package propositions have included John Wick spinoff Caine and Chris Pine action movie Run the Night. As for Sony and Amazon, the former has stumped up for market movies including A Man Called Otto, The Materialists and A Big Bold Beautiful Journey in recent years. Buying all of international on the Hunger Games would be a bigger outlay than any of those. It likely would be up there with what the studio paid for most international rights to Blade Runner 2049. Meanwhile, Amazon remains voracious. A month ago we reported that it stumped up more than $50M for The Beekeeper 2. Six weeks ago we told you that Scott Stuber's UA was making a splash with the Highlander reboot as that label continues to ramp up. Amazon also has its new international theatrical operation to think about next year, so something like The Hunger Games could be an exciting chess piece for that rollout if a deal made and the movie fit in with that plan. There should be more clarity on the film's direction in the next week or two, we understand. A lot of the market is waiting for a resolution here because other project sales depend on it. If an indie buyer is saving a chunk of change to buy The Hunger Games but that falls through, it likely would reroute that money to other projects. Sunrise on the Reaping revisits the world of Panem 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the reaping of the Fiftieth Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. The protagonist of the novel is the young Haymitch Abernathy (portrayed by Woody Harrelson in the previous movies and by Zada in this one), the second male tribute from District 12 to enter the deadly arena. The appetite for the books remains strong. The novel sold 1.5M copies in its first week on sale in the U.S., UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand after it hit shelves in March. The 1.2M copies sold in its first week in the U.S. are twice the first-week sales of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and three times those of Mockingjay. Let the Stars Guide Your Next Manicure—The Best Nail Designs, According to Your Zodiac Sign
From chic French tips to cat-eye designs, deciding on a fresh manicure can be overwhelming—which is why determining the best summer nails based on your zodiac sign might make the process a little easier. Whether you're an earth sign who deserves maximalist nails or the fire sign who's looking for an aesthetically pleasing set (try a painterly ombré design), looking to the stars can be a helpful starting point before your next salon appointment. The creative Pisces might gravitate toward aura nails or chrome designs, while perfectionist Virgos will appreciate the refined finish of minimalist nail art. When it comes to finding the perfect summer color, classic red will please the elegant Taurus, while moody tones like inky black will satisfy the nonconformist nature of Scorpios. It goes without saying that you have the final word on your manicure, but if you've ever felt paralyzed by the endless color and design options available, this is certainly a great place to start. Aquarians love a bit of whimsy, and they're unafraid to push the boundaries—it's no wonder their social circle looks to them for the latest trends. A glassy red manicure brings the drama, but the translucency gives them that extra edge that sets them apart from the crowd. Imaginative and creative, Pisceans are loved for their sensitive souls. They also tend to be intuitive and have a way of feeling the vibe of those who surround them. What better way to channel a Piscean's magical aura than with an otherworldly silver chrome manicure complete with 3D organic lines on top? A Pisces's aesthetic is anything but basic. Yes, the Aries is revered for their magnetic presence and sparkling personality (think fellow Aries Elle Fanning and Pedro Pascal), but for your manicure, lean into the April birthstone: diamonds. Go with an immaculate nude manicure and add on a crystal or two to just one fingertip for an elevated take on embellished nails. Considering that Aries can have a competitive side, this manicure will certainly get the compliments rolling in. Taureans tend to appreciate having a sense of stability, so a classic, vampy red manicure will keep them feeling at ease. Try a rich scarlet rather than a typical orange-red that's so popular in the summer months. A high-shine finish will please the regal side of Taurus signs. Considering just how charming, sociable, and versatile Geminis tend to be, a neutral manicure with gilded 3D art is perfect for their full summer calendar. This manicure will take you from boardroom to bar and goes with sundresses and a laid-back jeans-and-tee combo. There is a softness to a Cancer's personality that makes pink nails perfect for them. Seeing as this water sign also appreciates all things pretty and classic, a ballet-pink glazed manicure feels trendy and cool without going too overboard. If you're willing to go the extra mile, why not ease in with a minimalist nail charm? It's no secret that Leos enjoy a bit of drama and glamour. You'll no doubt be putting your best foot forward this summer with showstopping swimwear and perhaps a brand-new summer bob, so let your nails complement that. A neat and short silver manicure goes with pretty much everything and jazzes up the fingertips without competing with the rest of your look. Virgos tend to have an eye for exacting details. Couple that with their perfectionist side, and understated nail art is exactly up their alley. Try tiny dots on a barely-there base for a something-but-nothing manicure. Libras often have a serene, dreamy vibe to them. With Venus as their ruling planet, this star sign also has an affinity for romance. White nails capture the tranquility of Libras perfectly, but why not take it a step further with white-on-white embellishments and 3D designs? Libras appreciate order, so a tonal manicure brings interest yet keeps things from being overstimulating. Scorpios do what they love and love what they do, which means traditional rules and trends don't apply for this star sign. Why do yellow for summer when it's much cooler and off-kilter to do a black manicure for the warmer months? Pair your sun-kissed flush with an onyx French tip. Bonus points for a gold nail accessory à la Di Petsa, pictured here. This free-spirited star sign is all about self-expression, and their inquisitive nature means they're unafraid to try new things. Ombré, watercolor-esque nails will fulfill their love for a good time. Take a cue from the December birthstone and try varying shades of blue. This earth sign is often the friend who's grounded, hardworking, and responsible, which means no one deserves a maximalist, magical set of nails more than Capricorn. This shimmery, star-studded design gives off a princess vibe that'll no doubt please the Capricorn when the compliments come in.
