Why Siti Kasim's 'think a thousand times before converting for the sake of marrying' is gospel truth

LOVE conquers all or so it would seem. Take away the first flushes of romance, married life is full of unexpected pitfalls and challenges. So warned human rights activist and lawyer Siti Kasim on her Facebook page recently on the many instances marital breakdown has led to a spouse wishing to leave a religion which he or she converted into for the sake of nuptials. As it is not so easy to declare apostasy as in the case of Muslim convert spouses – in fact, it is very much a one-way traffic – it is best that one thinks long and hard when choosing a Muslim life partner, she counselled. Sharing a video of a Muslim wife lamenting about her convert husband's refusal to adhere to certain Islamic practices, the legal eagle – while chiding the woman for washing dirty laundry on social media – contended that such is a chilling reminder of how fast reality of life would creep in once marital bliss has faded. In the video which was first posted on Berani Viral's Facebook page, the lady identified only as Ema complained about her husband's fondness for his pet dog. The canine which Ema admits is cute has clearly become a major bone of contention as its very presence within the home has greatly upset her. Additionally, she is also infuriated by her husband partaking in some Taoist praying ritual alongside his grandmother who is living with them in addition to his fondness for Chinese food with dubious halal status. However, Ema was berated by one commenter for being narrow-minded with her religious interpretations having contained too many restrictions which were not universal Islamic values. He went on to chide the lady for not being able to differentiate between religious and cultural practices. One lady commenter who claimed to have divorced from her Muslim convert spouse revealed that she never felt the urge to share him on social media. Foolish seems to be the verdict here. The same sentiment was echoed by more than a few who thought such story telling of family matters in public to be in poor taste. One commenter seemed to hit the nail on the head by asking why marry a convert if the lady was unwilling to compromise or buy into a different cultural background. Such small-minded individuals are ill-suited to mixed marriages it was observed, hence Ema should have sought a Malay-Muslim spouse from the off to avoid all the challenges she is now facing. It was also pointed out that in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, does not require non-Muslims to convert to Islam before legally marrying a Muslim. There was little sympathy for Ema as many saw her rant as attention-seeking as well as displaying her narrow-mindedness for all to see. One commenter even urged the husband to simply kick out this complaining spouse instead of his beloved dog. That may be a tad drastic. The one thing that the video does highlight – regardless of one's cultural or religious beliefs – is that mixed marriages can be fraught with difficulties. Love can indeed conquer, but only if you let it … with a huge slice of compromise. – July 2025

Brazilian Critical Minerals (ASX:BCM) is confident that the lead consultant appointment, alongside ANSTO and WSP, brings together a highly experienced group of specialists ready to advance the Ema project in Brazil through detailed feasibility studies ahead of project financing discussions. Altris will deliver the process plant and non-process infrastructure components of the BFS as well as coordinate the overall compilation and delivery of the final DFS report. The bankable study doesn't usually differ in project parameters from the DFS and both include a stack of detail on what terms financiers should provide to make the project sing. Altris has delivered multiple scoping, prefeasibility and feasibility studies, and has led EPC and EPCM project execution for battery and critical minerals projects across multiple global jurisdictions. With strong experience in project delivery, it is recognised for producing fit-for-purpose designs that minimise capital expenditure while maintaining high standards of operability and safety. ANSTO has globally recognised expertise in the processing of critical and strategic metals including rare earths and was instrumental in the delivery of the metallurgical assessment during the Ema scoping study phase. WSP brings in-house expertise in the design, implementation and optimisation of in-situ recovery (ISR) mining projects across a range of commodities and global jurisdictions. Building momentum BCM managing director Andrew Reid said the company was extremely pleased to be partnering with Altris as its lead engineer. 'The Ema Project is the only rare earths in-situ recovery (ISR) development of its kind in the Western world, with a capital cost of just US$55 million – positioning it as potentially the lowest-cost, near-term source of rare earth feedstock under current market conditions,' he said. 'We look forward to building on the momentum of the past 12 months and continuing to add value through practical, fit-for-purpose engineering that is grounded in sound commercial logic.' What else is happening? BCM has multiple activities planned on the ground over the course of the next few months including geotechnical investigations, Lidar survey capture for accurate field designs, infrastructure powerline study design and road access assessment of upgrades to improve wet season access. Netflix has officially announced 'My Sad Dead' ('Mis muertos tristes'), a new four-part horror drama miniseries helmed by acclaimed Chilean director Pablo Larraín and produced by his Chilean label Fabula in collaboration with Argentina's K&S Films, producers of the streamer's recent global mega-hit 'The Eternaut.' The new series, based on the short story of the same name by Argentine author Mariana Enríquez, is set to begin filming at the end of June. Filming will take place in Buenos Aires for exteriors and Santiago, Chile for interiors. It Was Exhausting Described as a psychological and supernatural horror story rooted in societal trauma, 'My Sad Dead' draws not only from Enríquez's titular tale, but also incorporates characters and themes from her other works, including 'Julie', 'A Sunny Place for Shady People' and 'Back When We Talked to the Dead.' The story was adapted for the screen by Enríquez herself, along with celebrated Chilean writer Guillermo Calderón ('Neruda,' 'The Club'), Anastasia Ayazi and Larraín. 'My Sad Dead' features a star-studded Argentine cast led by Mercedes Morán ('Neruda,' 'The Swamp'), Dolores Fonzi ('Paulina,' 'Truman') and Alejandra Flechner ('Argentina 1985,' 'The Loast Brother'), who are joined by Carlos Portaluppi, Germán de Silva, Luz Jiménez and newcomer Carolina Sánchez Álvarez in her debut role. Netflix's official synopsis reads: 'Ema, a 60-year-old doctor, can see and hear the dead. She calls them 'presences' and has lived her entire life avoiding letting this gift connect her with the suffering of others. But when her niece Julie, a disturbed young woman who can also communicate with the dead, but in a much more intense and sexual manner, arrives at her house, Ema is forced to get involved. What begins as a family reunion turns into a disturbing chain of events that alters the balance between the world of the living and the dead, infecting an entire neighborhood with voices from beyond. As the borders between life, death and desire blur, Ema will have to confront her past, her daughter and the ghosts she never let go.' Of the upcoming adaptation, Larraín said: 'Mariana's writing is particularly visual, always brilliant and always dangerous. It's a casual, domestic horror that inspires and will inspire many film and television adaptations. I'm grateful to Netflix for the opportunity to work with this team of people I admire and who will undoubtedly do everything possible to make the best miniseries possible.' Enríquez expressed her own excitement, 'I am very happy that Pablo Larraín and Fabula are giving me the honor of adapting my stories into a single miniseries. I personally enjoy adaptations; I think they are readings, and I also have high expectations for this reading of 'My Sad Dead.' The entire process was very calm and respectful, and the fact that it's being released on a platform with the reach that Netflix has is breathtaking, along with the satisfaction of producing locally in Latin America.' Francisco Ramos, VP of Netflix Latin American Content, emphasized the platform's commitment to regional storytelling: 'Our growing commitment to the best Argentine stories takes on added meaning with the addition of one of Latin America's most important directors behind this new project. Working with Pablo Larraín to bring Mariana Enríquez's stories to the screen seemed like a natural fit.' 'My Sad Dead' is produced by Juan de Dios Larraín, Pablo Larraín and Ángela Poblete, with executive production by Álvaro Cabello and Cristián Donoso. Key department heads include Sergio Armstrong (cinematography), Rodrigo Bazaes (production design), Waldo Salgado (assistant director) and Alejandro Wise (production director).
