'No approach or talks' – Romano shuts down reports of Chelsea's interest in Premier League star
'No approach or talks' – Romano shuts down reports of Chelsea's interest in Premier League star Chelsea are not among the clubs in 'active talks' to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez this summer according to Fabrizio Romano. The Blues are once again expected to be busy this summer and have already completed the signing of Liam Delap from Ipswich. Advertisement Chelsea are thought to be close to agreeing a deal for Jamie Gittens, whilst they are also looking for a centre back and versatile attacker to strengthen Enzo Maresca's squad. Chelsea not in talks to sign Emi Martinez Whilst a striker was the main priority, the majority of Chelsea supporters would like to see the club sign a new goalkeeper. Chelsea have had uncertainty between the sticks over the last two seasons, and no goalkeeper made more errors leading to goals in the Premier League than Robert Sanchez last season. The Blues were strongly linked with a move for Mike Maignan earlier this month, but weren't prepared to get near AC Milan's £20-£25m valuation. Chelsea aren't interested in Martinez despite links. (Photo by) Advertisement It's thought Chelsea won't go back in for Maignan this summer, but they've also been linked with Martinez, although Romano has now provided an update. He took to and said: 'Chelsea are not among clubs in active talks to sign Emiliano 'Dibu' Martínez this summer. 'No approach or talks as Chelsea respect Martínez but their focus is on different positions.' Villa are believed to have set their asking price at £40m for Martinez, and the World Cup winner kept nine clean sheets in 37 Premier League appearances. Djordje Petrovic set to leave Chelsea fans would loved to have seen Djordje Petrovic as number one next season after the Serb excelled at sister club Strasbourg last season. Chelsea and Man Utd 'get Emi Martinez transfer message' as sale stance emerges
Manchester United have been heavily linked with Emi Martinez this summer but Chelsea have also been sounded out about a transfer swoop for the Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez remains keen on an exit from Aston Villa this summer and both Chelsea and Manchester United are said to have been given 'encouragement' over a move from the Argentine's camp. Martinez, 32, has established himself as one of the Premier League's top goalkeepers since joining Villa from Arsenal. But there are doubts over his long-term future and it's understood that he is keen on a move ahead of the 2025-26 campaign. Manchester United have been heavily linked with Martinez amid the ongoing scrutiny over Andre Onana 's position at Old Trafford. It had been claimed via reports in Argentina, via The Metro, that Chelsea - and Maresca in particular - were keen on the idea of challenging their old rivals for Martinez's signature. Furthermore, The Mail claim that both the Blues and United have been given encouragement from Martinez's representatives over a potential move for his services this summer, with Villa ready to consider a sale if they receive serious offers for their current No.1. It's been outlined elsewhere, though, that Chelsea are not currently targeting Martinez as they are focused on strengthening in other positions. Chelsea have already attempted to sign Mike Maignan, the AC Milan keeper, this summer only for talks over a potential deal to collapse due to the Italian giants' demands. Reports have since indicated that Chelsea are happy with their current goalkeeping options, consisting of Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen and Mike Penders, with Djordje Petrovic seeking a transfer to continue playing regular first-team football. A move for Martinez - or any other goalkeeper for that matter - would represent a major U-turn for the Blues, whose current No.1 in Sanchez was subjected to criticism during the 2024-25 campaign. Martinez is understood to have already received proposals from ambitious clubs in the Saudi Pro League, however, he is not sold on the idea of moving to the Middle East this stage of his career and would prefer to keep playing at an elite level in Europe. His interest in a transfer to Manchester United has been well documented in recent weeks, thought any deal would likely be difficult given the Red Devils missed out on qualifying for the Champions League and will have to cut their cloth accordingly in the transfer market with big-money deals for Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo likely to eat up a large portion of their summer transfer budget. 'I'd rather take a points deduction' - fans on Martinez future
We asked for your views on who Aston Villa should buy if goalkeeper Emi Martinez leaves the club this are some of your comments:Ian: If Martinez does leave let's make sure we get best price possible and we should look at either Henderson or Ramsdale to replace him. Both I feel are very good young keepers who have Premier League experience and can only improve. The other option is young Trafford from Burnley. We also need a good back-up as I'm surprised that no-one has mentioned Ramsdale as a potential replacement if Martinez I'd rather Emi Martinez stayed at Villa next season. Goalkeepers with international pedigree and silverware are incredibly difficult to find at reasonable prices. Not to mention his leadership and charisma on and off the pitch! But if we have to let him go, I think Unai Emery should sign the goalkeeper that won him his most recent Europa League: Geronimo If Martinez goes, Chevalier seems a good choice. At the end of the day no one player is bigger than the I'd rather take a 6/10 point deduction than use Martinez's sale to pass PSR. A new goalkeeper having to gel with our defence will cost us those points throughout the news notifications on your club

Emi Martinez transfer detail complicates Aston Villa PSR headache
Emi Martinez's future will remain a central focus of Aston Villa's summer transfer window until a resolution is reached. The goalkeeper has attracted interest from the Premier League, across Europe and from Saudi Arabia as he considers starting a new chapter in his career. Advertisement However, a move to Saudi Arabia is seen as unlikely, with Martinez keen to remain in European football at this stage. READ MORE: Darren Ferguson speaks out as 'big' Birmingham City transfer announced READ MORE: How Aston Villa should raise over £100m for summer transfer chest Manchester United are interested in the 32-year-old, but would need to move on Andre Onana before recruiting a new first-choice goalkeeper. Onana, for his part, is said to be content at Old Trafford and determined to prove himself next season following a couple of underwhelming campaigns since joining from Inter Milan. Advertisement Atletico Madrid would also need to make room in their squad for the Villa man by moving on Jan Oblak, but there are no guarantees that will happen. Galatasaray have also been mentioned as a possible destination, though it's unclear whether they could meet Villa's asking price - or whether Martinez would be open to playing in Turkey. If Martinez does leave, Villa have a plan in place to replace him, with Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier reportedly under consideration. Lille are said to be asking around £40 million for Chevalier, who has two years remaining on his contract. Having already lost Angel Gomes and Jonathan David on free transfers this summer, Lille may be inclined to cash in on another of their prized assets while his market value remains high. Advertisement A Martinez departure could also influence how Villa's sporting director Monchi approaches the remainder of the summer window - particularly in relation to Premier League squad registration rules. Martinez qualifies as a homegrown player due to spending his early career at Arsenal. Currently, Villa have nine homegrown players in their squad: Martinez, Ross Barkley, Matty Cash, Ezri Konsa, Ian Maatsen, Tyrone Mings, Jacob Ramsey, Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins. Premier League rules stipulate that no more than 17 players in a 25-man squad can be non-homegrown. Therefore, at least eight senior squad members must meet the homegrown criteria. Advertisement If Martinez were to leave, Villa would be reduced to just eight homegrown players - meaning they could not afford to lose another homegrown asset without signing a replacement who meets the same criteria. With PSR known to be holding several clubs back, including Villa, the sale of academy products has become an attractive proposition. Of the nine homegrown players, Ramsey is the only true academy product. Even last summer, Emery stood firm and refused to sell him, despite interest from Newcastle United and Tottenham. Selling both Ramsey and Martínez would leave a significant hole in the squad—one that would need to be filled by a new homegrown player. Advertisement Ramsey was also the only 'club-trained' player Villa included in their UEFA squad for the Champions League knockout stage last season. For the 2025/26 Premier League season, Villa's Under-21 players must be born on or after 1 January 2004. Lamare Bogarde and Oliwier Zych fall into that category, but Louie Barry and Samuel Iling-Junior do not, as they were born before that date and would count as senior players. However, neither Barry nor Iling-Junior is expected to be part of Villa's senior squad next season. Barry has interest from clubs looking to sign him permanently, while Iling-Junior is likely to leave on loan again following a promising spell at Middlesbrough last term. Is there a plan in place if Martinez leaves?
BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty has been answering your questions on all things Premier asked: There are a lot of rumours about Emi Martinez going to Manchester United. If this does happen, who would Aston Villa target as a replacement?Phil answered: Jordan Pickford is England's best keeper but Everton will not sell and he is incredibly happy there so it will not be Trafford is a fine young keeper at Burnley, but he will not come cheap and Newcastle United have been heavily linked there. If he left would Nick Pope be happy as second choice? I'm not so would be very much a live contender for clubs seeking an upgrade (I put Chelsea in that bracket as well) in the goalkeeper keeper who is currently being linked with Villa is Lille's Lucas Chevalier, who was Ligue 1's keeper of the is a club that prepares for all eventualities, and with Martinez appearing to wave goodbye at the end of last season, they will no doubt have a plan in place should this come to depends on what happens now with the self-styled (although not in my opinion) "world's number one" do you think?
