Dong Giao: the Vietnamese village where wood comes to life

HANOI, Vietnam (Viet Nam News/ANN) -- It's a typical day in Dong Giao wood carving village in Hai Phong City's Cam Giang District. Throughout the village, the rhythmic sounds of chiselling, sawing and carving fill the air. At the village entrance, visitors may catch sight of artisan Vu Xuan En hard at work on a massive tree root. He is creating an ambitious sculpture featuring hundreds of prominent figures from Vietnamese history. The root itself is impressive: 6 meters wide, 3.3 meters tall and around 5 (metric) tons in weight. The work is expected to be completed by the end of next year. "I'm deeply passionate about this piece," said En. "My older brother shares a deep love for Vietnamese history, so together we decided to create this sculpture, '4,000 Years of Vietnamese History,' from a single tree root. We wanted it to be not only beautiful but meaningful." En is one of the village's most respected artisans, having inherited the craft from his family over generations. "To master this craft, you need both passion and natural talent," he explained. "That's the only way to become a truly skilled artisan." After working in the trade for 37 years, En has mastered every task involved. Yet he said the most challenging part is carving human figures, as details must be exact, so people can recognize who they are. The artisan has made a good livelihood through wood carving. Profound passion Like En, many artisans in Dong Giao remain loyal to their craft for decades. "This work demands perseverance, a love of learning and genuine passion," said woodcarver Vu Van Tao, 27, who has 12 years of experience. "If you're only in it for the money, it won't work." Tao added that young people like him bring fresh creativity. "With social media, there's so much to learn, including techniques from China that we adapt and build upon," he said. "We continuously refine the details -- facial expressions, carving lines -- and over time, our work becomes more beautiful and unique." Nguyen Thi Hoa, one of the few women in the trade, said her love for the craft keeps her going, even when the work is exhausting. "I'm so passionate about it, I just can't walk away," she said. Hoa has been carving for nearly 20 years and has noticed more young people joining the trade. "That's why I keep learning from those more skilled than me, always seeking new ideas to improve my products and increase their quality and value," she explained. For 60-year-old woodcarver Vu Van Nang, President Ho Chí Minh's teachings remain relevant. "President Ho once said, 'Study, study more, study forever,'" he recalled. "As craftsmen, we must do the same -- keep learning endlessly, only stopping when our minds can no longer go on." Nang said he has loved this craft since childhood, and everyone here is dedicated to nurturing and strengthening it over time. Dong Giao village is home to over 1,000 households, with 95 perz cent still practicing the centuries-old tradition of wood carving. "The local authorities actively support the community, first by facilitating access to loan programmes, especially employment-support loans through policy banks, to help villagers maintain and grow their woodworking businesses," said village head Vu Duc Thinh. "We're also training apprentices from other regions, passing on skills so they can contribute to the future of our craft village." Long tradition The wood carving craft in Dong Giao has existed for over 300 years. In the past, Dong Giao artisans were renowned for producing worship items such as altar tables, temple gates, horizontal panels and couplets. These products were highly prized in neighboring provinces and cities. Moreover, the skilled hands of Dong Giao craftsmen have left their mark on many famous architectural works across the country. Even today, the people of Dong Giao take pride in the contributions of their talented artisans in building the ancient Imperial City of Hue. According to village legend, during the reign of King Le Canh Hưng (1740–1786), Dong Giao craftsmen, represented by Vu Xuan Ngon, were present in Hue to participate in construction projects for the feudal dynasty. To this day, in Hue, there remains a village of Dong Giao artisans called Dong Tien, which continues to preserve the craft passed down through generations. Dong Giao craftsmen are known for their skillfulness, intelligence and diligence. Over time, they have continuously innovated, improved their designs and enhanced their skills. They have also applied scientific and technical advances in production, creating an incredibly rich and diverse range of wood carving products for both domestic and overseas markets, including China among others.

Shubman Gill smashes records with majestic 269 as India seize control against England at Edgbaston

Gill's magnificent knock, along with half-centuries from Ravindra Jadeja (89) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (87) helped India post a mammoth 587 on the board after they were put in to bat by England. The hosts later ended Day 2 of the second Test at Edgbaston on 77/3. read more India captain Shubman Gill receives a standing ovation from the crowd at Edgbaston after getting dismissed on 269 on Day 2 of the second Test against England. Reuters Shubman Gill earned himself a place in the pantheon of Indian batting heavyweights with a near flawless and record-breaking double hundred, giving his team complete control of the second Test against England in Birmingham on Thursday. Gill's monumental 269 off 387 balls in his debut series as Test captain allowed India to post a massive 587 all out before the inexperienced Indian pace attack delivered upfront to dismantle England top-order to reduce the hosts to 77 for three at stumps on day two. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Joe Root (18 batting off 37) and Harry Brook (30 batting off 53) settled the nerves in the England dressing room after the hosts lost three wickets for 25 runs. While England bowlers got no help from the surface, the Indians found swing and seam. Playing his first game of the series, Akash Deep struck twice in as many balls to cap off a perfect day for his team before Mohammed Siraj made it even better by having Zak Crawley caught at first slip. Akash got the ball to seam away on both the occasions, resulting in dismissals of the dangerous Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope in his second over. Pope's was a rather loose shot as he tried to play the moving ball towards mid-wicket. In Duckett's case, Gill was also a major contributor, taking a sharp catch at third slip. But the day was truly ruled by Gill, who collected 30 fours and three sixes on way to a record shattering double ton, making him the highest individual scorer for India in England ahead of Sunil Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD He also became the first Asian captain to amass a double hundred on these shores. For someone who had expressed his desire to be the best batter of the series, he is well on course to meet his target. In a matter of three innings in England, the 25-year-old has managed to improve his average to 40 from mid 30s at the start of the series. At the break, England had run out of ideas to stop Gill, who forged a 144-run alliance with Washington Sundar (42 off 103) to prop up India to 564 for seven. Beyond the numbers, what makes Gill's feat remarkable is that the high profile series is his first as Test captain. He has also made the number four his own following the retirement of Virat Kohli. Having hardly put a foot wrong with the bat, Gill also ensured that India did not cede the advantage to England from a strong position like they had done in Leeds in the series opener. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD With England short ball ploy not working and Shoaib Bashir being taken to the cleaners by Gill, England brought part timers Brook and Root in a desperate attempt to fetch wickets. The skipper collected five boundaries off Brook while Washington Sundar (42) held his ground at the other hand. The left-hander, who has played ahead of Kuldeep Yadav, was peppered by some short stuff from Josh Tongue before deciding to take the bait and pulling him over fine leg. Gill was stuck on 199 for a while but the moment finally arrived when Gill pulled Tongue for a single towards fine leg. His celebrations showed how much the effort meant to him as the opposition and the England fans duly applauded the special knock. Though he could not fetch a possible 300, getting jettisoned by Tongue soon after tea. In the morning session, England pacers were not able extract much from the surface as Gill and Ravindra Jadeja (89 off 137) made the most of the ideal batting conditions with a 203-run stand off 279 balls. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD India added 109 runs to the total in 25 overs after resuming the day at 310 for five. England had resorted to the short ball plan against Gill and Jadeja but that did not work the major part of the morning session. Tongue finally got the much-needed breakthrough late in the session with a short ball that Jadeja could not control to be caught by wicket-keeper Jamie Smith. Amid bright sunshine at Edgbaston, Jadeja resumed his innings with a crisp backfoot punch through the cover and a cut off Stokes. Gill got his first boundary of the day in third man region before cover driving Chris Woakes. It was surprising to see Gill play the reverse sweep off spinner Bashir. Later in the session, Gill also swept Bashir for a six behind square. Jadeja too got into the act and stepped out to smash Bashir for a maximum over mid on. Ben Stokes set an interesting field when Sundar joined Gill in the middle, employing a leg slip and two close in fielders on the leg-side. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

Gautam Gambhir's Future As India Coach Under Scrutiny Over England Series? Ex-Star Says: "BCCI Will Slowly..."

Former England spinner Monty Panesar has pointed out important concerns regarding Gautam Gambhir 's tenure as India head coach, citing the team's issues, with bowling as the primary reason behind the increasing doubt on his role. India will be hoping to level the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in the second Test against England at the Edgbaston Stadium starting July 2. All eyes will be on the Shubman Gill -led side after they lost the first Test despite holding much of the advantage after the first innings. In the five-wicket loss, India became the first team to lose a Test despite having five batters score hundreds. In an exclusive conversation with IANS, Panesar spoke on the importance of picking a bowling lineup that can deliver in England. "The problem is that if Gautam has the ability to make his team into a good batting unit, he then needs to show the ability can make the team into a good bowling unit. Fans are going to troll. They're going to come after Gautam Gambhir. When India were 400 plus, India should have won the Test match. But the question is, 'Is Gautam Gambhir a good coach to make the bowling good? Does he have the ability? ' He needs to show that. 'He needs to now think, right, I know how to get the batting to fire, but as a coach, can I pick the team to take 20 wickets? That's his biggest challenge right now in England, and if he is not able to demonstrate that, then I think the BCCI will slowly, Test by Test match, assess him, and they'll just think, you know, what should we do after the end of the series? His biggest challenge is going to be to pick the right attack for every venue to take 20 wickets,' Panesar told IANS. The former left-handed opening batter was appointed as India's head coach following Rahul Dravid 's departure. Since his appointment, India have won only three of their 11 Tests played - 2-0 win vs Bangladesh and 1-3 loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy - which also led to India falling out of the top two in the 2023-25 World Test Championship cycle. When asked to predict the conditions at Edgbaston, Panesar revealed he expects it to be a turning wicket which will help Kuldeep Yadav or Washington Sundar, with the former England cricketer advising team India to bring in one of these two as the frontline spinners. 'It's going to be a turning wicket. Edgbaston is dry. We won't see much grass from the wicket. I think it will help India. The Edgbaston wicket will suit India. India just need to work out, right? Batting isn't the problem. It's bowling. We need to take 20 wickets to win a Test match. That's the most important thing, and Shubhman Gill did say, 'I will pick 5-4 tailenders, but an attack that can take 20 wickets.' 'From that point of view, I think Prasidh Krishna bowls too short, maybe give him a rest. Bumrah, I think, will rest anyway. Kuldeep Yadav comes in, or Washington Sundar, one of the other, to play an extra spinner. Ashdeep Singh has to play. Left arm seam, I think that will cause problems for the England team. Then, they have Mohammed Siraj, maybe Shardul Thakur could play,' he added.
