Muhammadu Buhari: Nigeria mourns its ex-president and military man
Muhammadu Buhari, former president of Nigeria, a figure synonymous with anti-corruption efforts and military discipline, died on 13 July 2025 in London. Nigeria is currently experiencing a deep period of national mourning and for seven days, President Bola Tinubu has mandated that flags be flown at half-mast. Buhari's death marks the end of an important chapter for Africa's most populous country. He leaves behind a legacy, characterised by both heroic service and difficult obstacles. Muhammadu Buhari was born in Daura, in Northern Nigeria's Katsina State, in December 1942. Buhari enrolled in the Nigerian Military Training College in Kaduna in 1962 at age 20, approximately two years after Nigeria gained independence from Britain on 1 October 1960. Buhari ascended to prominence in 1983, assuming the role of Nigeria's military head of state following a coup that resulted in the ousting of President Shehu Shagari. During this period, the 'War Against Indiscipline' policy aimed to promote a thorough reorientation of social norms. The government implemented stringent measures to combat corruption and maintain discipline. From January 1984 to August 1985, his military rule was characterised by a firm stance against corruption. In 1985, General Ibrahim Babangida executed a coup d'état, resulting in the ousting of Buhari. Subsequent to this, Buhari encountered a phase of confinement. Despite his prior military command, he subsequently embarked on a career in democratic governance. His ascension to power was a protracted and challenging endeavour. After three unsuccessful attempts to become president, Buhari finally achieved a significant victory in the 2015 election, beating then-incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan for the first time. During his campaign, Buhari declared his commitment to addressing the pressing issues of corruption, insecurity and the economy in the country. After taking office, Buhari's administration had to deal with several issues, chief among them being the Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast. His administration made key gains against Boko Haram from 2015 to 2023, but faced new security threats. Recessions and high rates of inflation have plagued the economy, partly due to the decline in oil prices. To consolidate government revenue, the administration implemented several policies, with the Treasury Single Account being the most notable. Buhari's unwavering personal integrity has always distinguished his public persona. Many Nigerians were impressed by Buhari's apparent honesty in a political climate often characterised by corruption. His administration faced criticism for human rights violations, especially concerning the 2020 End of Special Anti-Robbery Squad demonstrations. The administration's approach to various issues, including the tensions between agriculturalists and pastoralists and the need for economic diversification, has sparked significant discourse. Given these obstacles, his supporters claimed that he made a sincere effort to further Nigeria's development. Many individuals perceived him as a steadfast patriot. Buhari's anti-corruption campaign faced opposition from several industries. Atiku Abubakar and other opposition figures have accused him of shielding dishonest associates. Legal experts, including senior advocate of Nigeria Olisa Agbakoba, described the campaign as politically motivated and discriminatory. Bishop Matthew Kukah was among the religious leaders who criticised the government for using anti-corruption initiatives as tools for political manipulation. Watchdog groups such as Transparency International and the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project criticised the administration for failing to pursue its close associates. Buhari passed away at the age of 82 following a lengthy illness, according to Bayo Onanuga, the spokesperson for President Tinubu. Details of his illness were not disclosed, but it is known that he had been receiving medical treatment in London for a few days prior to his death. Vice-President Kashim Shettima will accompany Buhari's body back to Nigeria, and the governor of Katsina State, Dikko Umaru Radda, announced that Buhari's remains would arrive in Katsina on 15 July 2025, for burial in his hometown of Daura. Delhi man fumes as dad's 16-year-old Mercedes E280 V6 is labelled 'scrap' under fuel ban
In a post that has sparked fresh debate over End of Life (EoL) vehicle policies, a Delhi-based man took to his X account to express his frustration at being compelled to label his father's well-maintained 16-year-old Mercedes-Benz E280 V6 as nothing more than 'vintage scrap.' A man shared how his dad's 16-yr-old Mercedes E280 still runs perfectly but must be scrapped under Delhi's EoL laws.(X/ @ShivrattanDhil1) (Also read: Delhi man forced to sell Range Rover at 'throwaway prices' due to 10-year diesel ban) Sharing a photo of the car, the user, Rattan Dhillon, wrote: 'This is my dad's 16-year-old Mercedes E280 V6 — still running stronger and cleaner than most of the so-called modern cars that keep breaking down on roads.' Every single button still works, and the engine? Still does 0–100 in just 6–7 seconds. Zero pollution, zero nonsense. But sadly, I have to label it a 'vintage scrap' just because we live in a country where politicians have zero love for cars! I challenge the government to prove it pollutes. They won't, but they'll still penalise it!' The post has garnered over 30k views and sparked a range of reactions online. Check out the post here: Mixed reactions from users Several users empathised with Dhillon, highlighting the emotional and mechanical value of well-preserved vehicles. One user suggested, 'Can you relocate the car to a non-NCR region where it can still be operated?' Another wrote, 'In most countries, you can apply for a heritage licence (called Club Permit Scheme) for vintage vehicles. We should have one as well!' Others pointed out the regional limitations of the law. 'The 10/15-year-old vehicle rule is not for the entire country as of now; it is just for Delhi NCR,' one comment read. 'Just retain the beauty. And luckily we are not in Delhi NCR,' said another. However, not all were sympathetic. One user remarked, 'Rules won't be changed just because your dad owns a Mercedes. Follow it or relocate to a place where there are no rules.' Another cheekily added, 'Such a beauty—you need to sell this, right? How much?' New crackdown on EoL vehicles in Delhi Dhillon's frustration comes just a day after Delhi authorities enforced a new directive barring refuelling of End of Life vehicles—those older than 10 years for diesel and 15 years for petrol—from July 1. Under orders from the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), the Transport Department, along with Delhi Police and traffic teams, has begun strict implementation. At least one traffic officer has been stationed at each of the 350 petrol pumps across the city to prevent fuelling of EoL vehicles. Teams from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and 59 exclusive transport teams are part of this enforcement drive, with police having powers to impound or issue challans to violators. Two additional police personnel will also be present at each pump to maintain law and order during the operation.

Adults stars Malik Elassal, Lucy Freyer, Jack Innanen, Amita Rao and Owen Thiele attended the L.A. iteration's opening party. 'This is so on-theme with the show,' Inannen told The Hollywood Reporter from the event. 'I feel like laundromats, especially for a young New Yorker — this is a staple of the experience.' FX Network's senior vp of integrated promotions Kenya Hardaway Green explains that the team was aiming to introduce the show in an unexpected way. Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw, known for their work on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, created the series that counts Nick Kroll among its executive producers. 'We were presented with the idea of laundromats as a destination, and from there, the idea began to take shape,' Green says. 'How could we turn a mundane task like doing laundry into the ultimate experience for our target audience? We designed a space that married unexpected moments with the realities of the location, resulting in the ultimate house party. It felt like a fitting way to kick off the season.' For her part, Freyer praised the innovative opportunity for fans to experience the energy of the show. 'The thing that I love about FX is, they're really creative with everything that they do,' the actress said. 'I really trust every creative decision they make. This is such a cool, interesting vibe. I love it.' Innanen remains excited for viewers to see an authentic take on contemporary NYC life. 'The biggest thing is, it's very, very real,' he says of Adults. 'These are real kids that I walk by on the Lower East Side. You can pick out anyone from anywhere.' In her review of the series for The Hollywood Reporter, critic Angie Han wrote, 'Adults' greatest strength is a core cast with chemistry for days.'
