Here's what no one tells parents about raising teenagers

No one ever tells you that one day, the biggest challenge in parenting won't be homework battles or curfews – it will be breathing through your nose. There's a very specific moment, somewhere around Year 8, when a child's bedroom transforms. One day, it's a normal room. The next it's a foggy microclimate of its own, heavy with an aroma that says: I have been sweating, living, snacking, and possibly dying in here. I used to think the 'teenage smell' was an exaggeration. Then I opened my kid's door and my nostrils packed my bags, and walked out. A smell with layers There are layers to it. First comes the base note of damp sports uniforms shoved into the corner 'to deal with later.' Add a middle note of socks that haven't seen daylight since the Taylor Swift Eras tour started. Then there's the top note – a sharp, mysterious tang that you know is coming from a mug of something that started life as Milo. On the other end of the spectrum is the scent we'll call Eau de Trying Too Hard: litres of body spray, hair products, and skincare sprayed with such determination that even the dog sneezes. 5 No one ever tells you that one day, the biggest challenge in parenting won't be homework battles or curfews – it will be breathing through your nose. Vibe Images – And if you think it's bad at home? Try being in a car with them after training. Driving home from sports days with your head hanging out the window like a Labrador is a real thing. Teachers have seen things I asked my friends who teach high school what an average summer afternoon is like in their classroom. One said: 'By the end of the day, it's like a mix between a gym bag, a sandwich shop, and a Lynx factory explosion. I stand near the window and hope I make it out alive.' 5 'By the end of the day, it's like a mix between a gym bag, a sandwich shop, and a Lynx factory explosion. I stand near the window and hope I make it out alive,' high school teachers say. Golib Tolibov – Another told me that whenever someone opens their backpack, there's a moment of fear. Underneath the pong 'You never know what's coming out – yesterday's lunch? A forgotten art project made out of milk cartons? There's always a squished banana.' It would be easy to make this an 'ugh, teenagers' story. But here's the truth: the smell is the least important thing happening in that room. 5 The smell is the least important thing happening in that room, some have said. Satjawat – Here's the thing: it's not their fault. Their bodies are working overtime. Hormones, growth spurts, sport, school – it's a perfect storm. And like the breakouts and the grunts, the smell is just another stage. Because behind that closed door is a person in the middle of the most awkward, exciting, infuriating, incredible transformation of their life. The truth is, if you can get past the whiff, there's a lot to love about teens. The other part no one warns you about What really knocks the air out of your lungs is not the smell. It's the sudden realisation that they don't need you as much anymore. The bedtime cuddles vanish. Long conversations are replaced by mumbles. They disappear into their room for hours, and when they emerge, you feel like you need a translator just to find out what's going on in their head. 5 Because behind that closed door is a teenager in the middle of the most awkward, exciting, infuriating, incredible transformation of their life. – And just when you think you've been completely shut out, they give you a moment. It might be a dumb joke that makes you both laugh so hard you cry. Or a hug out of nowhere. Or a story about their day that makes you stop and think, 'Wow, you're turning into someone amazing.' That's the payoff. A phase that stinks (literally) Parenting a teenager is standing in the middle of that smell, windows open, heart wide, hoping you're doing enough. 5 Parenting a teenager is standing in the middle of that smell, windows open, heart wide, hoping you're doing enough. Gregory Johnston – It's hard. It's funny. It's wonderful. And it's fleeting. One day the smell will fade. They'll move out, take their gym bag and their body spray, and the house will smell like fresh air again. And, ridiculous as it sounds, we'll probably walk past that empty room and wish we could breathe it all in just one more time.

The tiny UK village that attracts A-list celebrities like bees to honey

The historical market town of Chipping Norton in the Cotswolds boasts only around 6,500 residents - and more of them than one might expect are A-list celebrities. Often fondly called 'Chippy' by locals, the charming, honey-colored stone village sits in an Area of Outstanding Beauty - surrounded by rolling hills and picturesque countryside, which offer a quintessential English landscape. So it's no wonder that Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia Del Rossi chose the town after fleeing the US late last year, a decision that they made in the wake of Donald Trump's re-election as President. The couple were in glamorous company as residents of Chipping Norton. Such is the influx of the celebrity elite that they have a collective moniker – 'The Chipping Norton Set'. 'Yes. We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, 'He got in.' And we're like, 'We're staying here,'' Ellen said last weekend at an event at Everyman theatre in nearby Cheltenham. The couple have subsequently sold the property, citing the lack of horse stables, but Ellen has professed her love for the area, prompting speculation that they'll stay in the Cotswolds. 'We're just not used to seeing this kind of beauty. The villages and the towns and the architecture – everything you see is charming, and it's just a simpler way of life. It's clean. Everything here is just better – the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here.' Celebrities that have called the area home include Jeremy Clarkson — whose famous farm Diddly Squat is nearby — David Cameron, Jamie Oliver, Kate Moss, David and Victoria Beckham and Ellie Goulding, Princess Beatrice, Zara Tindall and Simon Cowell. Calvin Harris and his wife Vick Hope have recently won local approval by knocking down an 'ugly' local property to make way for their Cotswolds dream mansion. In fact, they hired one the Royal Family 's favourite architects to build the gaff. Local farm shop Daylesford Organic has become an iconic haunt of these A-listers and royalty, with Eddie Redmayne seen pursuing the aisles and Princess Eugenie also spotted having a browse. The town boasts a variety of independent shops, including antique stores and a regular market, alongside a diverse selection of pubs and restaurants. For anyone looking to upgrade to full members club luxury, Soho Farmhouse is just down the road, which is frequented by stars from Rita Ora to Meghan Markle (who reportedly held her hen do there) and Taylor Swift, who hired a £3.3m cottage near Chipping Norton during her Eras tour in 2024. Every year former Blur bassist and local cheesemaker Alex James throws the Big Feastival in nearby Kingham, which "brings together music from the UK's biggest artists, Michelin-starred chefs, award-winning street food and an exciting array of family activities". This August, revellers will be able to see Nelly Furtado, The Rizzle Kicks and the Wombats hit the stage. The addition of these famous-folk has had a mixed reaction locally, though. Unhappy homeowners have rejected plans for 350 new homes near to Clarkson's Diddly Squat Farm. Others believe the influx of tourists is good for the area, but is pushing prices up.

Prince George's hidden detail in 12th birthday snap hints at secret family tradition

The Prince and Princess of Wales have released a brand new photo and video to mark the 12th birthday of eldest son, Prince George - and in them, he is seen sporting an important accessory The Prince and Princess of Wales have continued their tradition by releasing a brand new photo - as well as a video - to mark Prince George's 12th birthday today. ‌ The royal couple nearly always mark their children's birthdays with the release of a new snap, with the one of George shared today showing him one year away from being a teenager, smiling and relaxed as he leans on the gate in the Norfolk countryside. The snap was taken by photographer Josh Shinner and shows George wearing a checked shirt and green gilet, with a blue and white friendship-style bracelet on his left wrist. ‌ ‌ It's not the first time he has been seen wearing the woven accessory, as it also featured on his wrist in his 11th birthday portrait last year, as well as when he attended the Euro 2024 final with dad Prince William in Berlin last summer. Kensington Palace has so far declined to reveal who gave the prince the bracelet - but he is far from the only royal to have been spotted wearing one, hinting they could be a royal family tradition. Princess Charlotte was seen wearing a similar bracelet while on a trip to Wimbledon last summer, while Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, is often seen wearing a woven bracelet. Even King Charles was seen sporting one of the woven bracelets during his tour of the Channel Islands and at the State Opening of Parliament in 2024. ‌ Friendship bracelets like these have become popular once again, partly due to pop star Taylor Swift and her Eras tour, with fans exchanging them at her concerts. And it seems the royals all first began wearing them following Taylor Swift's concerts in London, which George and Charlotte attended with dad, William, last summer. ‌ While out and about on engagements in Cape Town last year, eagle-eyed royal fans noticed William also wearing a beaded bracelet with the name 'Papa' - what his children call him - on it. In an interview, William later explained: "Well, this is a this is a, I think, a relic, if you like, from a Taylor Swift concert that my daughter decided that she wanted to create a bracelet for. She gave it to me when I came away. So I promised that I would wear it and try not to lose it while I was out here." ‌ Meanwhile, as well as a new photo, George's 12th birthday has also been marked with the release of behind-the-scenes footage showing the youngster having fun with his siblings, Charlotte and Louis. ‌ George is shown laughing as he and Charlotte both lift a giggling Louis up in their arms during an outdoor photoshoot, with George holding his younger brother around his chest and Charlotte holding his legs. The upbeat video montage, filmed by Kensington Palace's in-house social media team, shows the trio smiling as they stride along holding hands in the sunshine, with Louis in the middle of his brother and sister. The royal siblings also pose for a family portrait with Charlotte and Louis sitting on a rustic wooden gate as George leans next to them. Get Royal Family updates straight to your WhatsApp!
