VSCO's iPhone camera app is now available globally

Photo editing and sharing app VSCO is making its iOS camera app, Capture, available across the world, following a limited launch in June, when the app could be downloaded only in Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. VSCO also said it is acquiring The Freelance Photographer, which provides a mix of online and offline workshops for studying photography and videography. 'There's a clear gap in the market for business education and industry-specific guidance for emerging photography professionals who are looking to secure sustainable client relationships. The Freelance Photographer serves as a long-term career partner to creatives, offering a comprehensive education, a supportive community, as well as the tools and insight they need to turn their craft into a career,' Eric Wittman, CEO of VSCO, said in a statement. Image Credit: VSCO VSCO's first new app in more than a decade, Capture focuses on taking pictures with a set aesthetic. The app has more than 50 presets for images along with some real-time effects. It offers manual control over camera functions like shutter speed and exposure, and can take pictures in RAW and ProRAW formats. The app also lets users sync all photos with VSCO's cloud. The Freelance Photographer offers various courses, starting from $208 per month for the basic coaching plan, and a $625 per month that gives subscribers access to over 50 tools, several courses, and personal mentoring from the company's founder, Paul Weaver. The acquisition fits neatly into VSCO's aim of catering more to professional photographers. Last year, the company launched VSCO Hub, to enable brands to discover photographers for different projects, and VSCO Sites, which lets photographers create web pages to show off their work. In May, the company launched VSCO Canvas, a collaborative whiteboard product that lets users create moodboards for different projects.

VSCO to launch new iPhone camera app 'Capture' with film-style presets

Visual Supply Co. (VSCO) is launching a new iPhone camera app called Capture, designed as a third-party alternative to Apple's native camera. According to a report by 9To5Mac, Capture focuses on enhancing the photography experience by allowing users to apply film-style presets before taking a shot—eliminating the need for post-processing. The launch comes shortly after Adobe debuted its own camera app, Project Indigo, which brings computational photography and manual controls to iPhones, along with Lightroom integration for editing. VSCO Capture app: Details Citing Bloomberg's Chris Welch, the report notes that Capture aims to shift focus from editing to the moment of image capture. Unlike VSCO's primary app, which centres on editing photos after they're taken, Capture allows users to select their desired film-like aesthetic beforehand. At launch, the app will offer 50 of VSCO's most popular presets for instant use. Users can toggle between automatic and manual modes, with options to adjust shutter speed, exposure compensation, and visual effects like bloom and halation. 'Photographers increasingly are moving away from using overly complicated editing software and are using apps that make it easier to get that right moment with a desired aesthetic right at the point of capture,' said VSCO CEO Eric Wittman in an interview with Welch. Capture will be free to use with a VSCO account. While it will not include AI-powered tools at launch, such features may appear later in VSCO's flagship app. The Capture app will start rolling out in select markets including Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand by the end of this week. A wider global rollout is planned for later this summer.

VSCO is launching an AI-powered collaborative moodboard

Photo and video editing platform VSCO on Wednesday launched an AI-powered collaborative moodboard to expand how its products are used by photographers and artists. Called Canvas, the moodboard lets you import and edit your photos using the standard VSCO editing tools — so you can tune settings like shadows, brightness, exposure, temperature, tint, grain, blur, vibrance and hue. The AI chops come into play when you want to generate images using text prompts. The moodboard also lets you select parts of an image and use a 'region prompt' menu to have AI recreate those parts with text prompts. The weights of the region prompt can be adjusted with a slider to generate different versions. There's also a variation button that, as it says on the tin, makes the AI create variations of a generated image. This also comes with a slider to control how close to the original image the generated image is. 'Photographers, who often work alone, use Google Slides or Pinterest to create a vision for a project that they want to show the clients. We thought there could be a better tool that was designed for ideation with creators in the front and center of it,' VSCO's CEO Eric Wittman told TechCrunch. The moodboard feature uses tech from an image editing startup called Facet that VSCO acquired last year. Facet had raised over $13 million in funding before it was acquired. VSCO said more than 84% of content was generated using AI during Canvas' test phase. The company plans to enable users to search VSCO and import photos uploaded onto the platform into the moodboard. The launch comes days after Adobe unveiled its own moodboard that has AI-powered image generation and editing features. Startups like Visual Electric, Cove and Kosmik have also tried to build whiteboards and moodboards to help people collaborate on ideas. Canvas is available to all users, but paying subscribers will get extra credits for prompting and generating images using the AI model.
